The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark (Paperback)

English

We listened to some more chapters from the book. We collected discussed why dark can be exciting.

We wrote a letter to Plop telling him not to be afraid of the dark and about all the exciting things he could do in the dark.

 

Phonics

We have been revising the long o sound, ui as in juice, ue as in glue, u-e as in cube, u-e as in rule, ew as in flew.

 

SPaG

We have been learning about conjunctions (joining words) and writing sentences including... and, but, because, so. The children are trying to use them as often as possible in their own writing.

Maths

The children have been adding/subtracting a multiple of 10 to/from a 2 digit number, 26+20 or 41-30. We have also worked on number bonds to 10 and 100.

RE

This week, we have read Psalm 139 together. The children learnt that a Psalm is a bit like a song or a prayer. They responded to the Psalm with their own art work in the style of Eva Crawford.

 
 
Art
We all chose one leaf and really examined it closely. We made a line drawing of it using felt pens and then did rubbings and drawings using metallic wax crayons.

Geography

The children know the seven continents and five oceans so well now. During our lesson, we looked at the continent of Europe in more detail. 

 

Forest School 

We made shelters using logs, tarps and ropes. There was some tricky knot tying too.Great teamwork and resilience was shown.

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark (Paperback)

English

We have started learning through the story of The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark. The owl is called Plop. We wrote sentences to describe him, using adjectives and connectives.

In pairs, we discussed why he might be afraid of the dark and wrote some possible reasons for this. 

We wrote in character as Plop.

 

Phonics

We have been revising all the long e sounds,ee as in sheep, ea as in leaf, ie is in field, e-e as in Steve,  ey as monkey, y as in baby.

 

Maths

The children learned how to add a 1 digit number to a 2 digit number, 26+4 and we looked at subtraction in the same way.

We have been counting in 10's and learning the 10x table.

 

European Day of Languages – Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Edimburgo

French

This week for our French lesson, we learned about European Day of Languages which is celebrated on 26th September. In the lesson, we shared what other languages we have learned or know about. We then identified ways which we can celebrate other languages and cultures, including learning new words, tasting their food, practising languages we know. We also discussed reasons why it is important to learn other languages. To finish the lesson, we learned ways to say hello and goodbye in other European languages. 
 

PE

The children have really improved their under arm throwing and catching. They have played various mini games and learnt about the importance of dodging to get away from a defender.

The children have started to make their Noah's Ark puppets which they will use to act out the story.

We also read the story of God's Rainbow which explains God's promise, love and faithfulness.

We learnt about the plants that live in a desert habitat. We discussed how the plants have adapted to survive in the desert.

 

Forest School

We talked about the Autumn Equinox which was on Monday. We talked about how this marks the start of Autumn and how day and night get equal time for a brief moment.

We went on a fungi hunt in our top field.  We noticed the different shapes, sizes and colours. We know not to touch them.

Burglar Bill

This week we all received a letter from Bakery Bill. He answered our qustions and told us how he's geting on. We wrote some instructions about how to look after a baby. We planned and wrote an alternative ending to his story. We also created and descibed a sweet item for his bakery.

We re-read the story of Noah's Ark, focusing on the rainbow being a sign of God's promise (covenant) - never to send another flood again.

Year 2 are thoroughly enjoying learning about The Great Fire of London. We learnt where the fire started and how it spread so quickly (causes).

 

Forest School

We all chose our own learning this week. There was leaf cooking, leaf identifying, stick wrapping, bug hunting and apple finding. Great imagination, co-operation and teamwork was shown.

 

Science

We learnt about different habitats around the world and the animals that live in them.

Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed reading the story of Noah's Ark. Using pictures and sentences they retold the story brilliantly.

 

Computing

It was interesting to learn and understand what Information Technology (IT) is.

The children identified items/objects that were IT and were not IT. They drew pictures and labelled them so well.

The children have had a great week back and settled into Year 2 really well.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning together.

We role played being Burglar Bill and wrote some questions for him when he was in the hot seat. We wrote sentences about what information we knew about him. 

 

Maths: Grouping tens and ones - St James' Primary School, Wetherby.

Maths

We have been working on place value this week.

The children used base ten to make two-digit numbers.

They also did a lot of counting and recapped adding and taking 1 and 10 from a number.

The Great Fire of London - we watched a video clip about how the fire started.

The children drew a scene from the fire labelling it with things they had learned.

 

 

Underarm and Overarm Throwing Technique

PE

The children have revisited the fundamental skills of underam throwing and catching.

They played mini-games and displayed fantastic team work.

 

Art

We discussed the work of Andy Goldsworthy. We then went outside and chose different things to sketch. We looked very closely at what we were drawing.

 

Forest School

We had a look at all the fruit growing on our trees. We tidied up the nature area by working together to collect all the rubbish which has appeared over the holiday. We reminded ouselves about keeing safe at Forest School. We chose our own learning and demonstrated superb problem solving, teamwork and resilience.

 

Science

We started our new learning about Living Things. We sorted pictures of objects into groups ,living and dead. We then added another group which was things which have never been alive. We sang a great song about our learning which included the life processes which living things have.

The children retold the story on story fans and beautifully illustrated them.

PE

In PE, we made our small games of rounders into two bigger games with more fielders and batters.

The rules changed slightly to make it more challenging, but everyone had a lot of fun. Some of the teachers joined in too!

 

Science

We planned an investigation to make a boat to carry Harry across Bottlenose Bay after his own boat has been smashed to smithereens.

We are going to make and test our boats next week. We discussed which materials would be best as the boat has to float, be waterproof and strong.

NSPCC

We had a visit from a lady from the NSPCC. She talked to us about keeping safe and who we could talk to if we had a problem.

 

Tag Rugby

We had a great session with our South Ribble coach. He taught us how to hold the ball, score a try, do a swing pass and pick up the ball without stopping.

We then had a game.

Moving Up Morning

We had our second moving up morning in Year 3. Mr Campbell was impressed with out listening.

 We have been busy learning the dance moves for this years 'Dance from the Heart' celebration.

Year 2 have picked up the moves very quickly and bring so much energy to the dance.

After drawing music inspired sketches last week, the children used these to paint larger pieces of abstract art. The results were fabulous!

This week we started our new book, Stella and the Seagull. Year 2 drew and wrote about the main events of the story in order on a flow diagram.

They noted down interesting vocabulary about Stella and the Seagull and used these words in their own sentences and wrote a fantastic diary entry about Stella's day.

The children were amazing and did so well, they showed super skills and sportsmanship.

We came to some conclusions about the best conditions for beans to germinate and grow well.

We have brought some beans home to grow.

We showed great teamwork when building our shelters. There was also excellent communication and resilience shown. We also had the wool out and super creativity was shown.

We started a new book called Snail Mail. We had a great discussion about what snail mail is and the developments in technology which mean we can communicate with each other more easily and quickly.

We used the map from the book to find out where Tiger the snail visited. He sent a postcard from each country.

We used the atlases and globes to see where the places are and what the flags look like.

We then planned our own story which we will write next week.

 

 

 

Telling the Time | 5 minute intervals

Maths

We have been learning about time this week.

The children now know, five, ten, quarter/fifteen, twenty, twenty-five and half/thirty minutes past the hour. 

You could look at the minutes to the hour (as above) and keep asking your child to tell you the time. It will really help them to become more familiar with all the times.

We used clocks to make the times ourselves and we went outside to make shadow clocks.

We had a good look at our beans and the different conditions are starting to have an effect on the germination and growth of the beans. We will bring them home next week and continue to grow them.

We learnt about the flower moon which happened on Monday. A full moon happens once every 29 and a half days and May is when wildflowers start showing their beauty, so this Moon got the flowery title. We looked at pictures of the lunar cycle and then we made our own flowers out of natural materials.

We used it as inspration to write our own poem about one of the animals featured in the book.

We read our poems to the children in Year 3.

Pathway: Stick Transformation Project

Art

Our project this half term is stick people.

The children spent time in the nature area searching for the perfect stick to use for making their own stick people.

Back in class, they used their sketch books to explore and draw some of their great ideas.

 

Forest School

This week we did some wild weaving. This is really good for developing our fine motor skills, creativity and imagination. We carefully put the rubber bands on the base and then used grasses, leaves and flowers in our piece of work. Usually we do not pick anything but today we could pick a few things. At the end of the session we had a reflection, we told whoever was next to us what we liked about their work. 

We also discussed the cotton tree seeds and how they are all being dispersed by the wind.

Science

We planted beans to investigation the effects of different conditions on germination.

Lila lives in a Kenyan village where it hasn't rained for a long time. We wrote predictions from the front cover and we wrote in role as Lila.

We have been subtracting 2-digit numbers from 2-digit numbers with exchange. We have used Base 10 equipment and represented the 10s and 1s by drawing lines and dots.

The children used nature and objects from around the classroom to create seed, root and shoot sculptutres.

They were very creative and explored manipulating the materials by folding, twisting or bending.

We finished our learning about measuring mass and capacity. We completed assessments about our recent learning.

We also learnt how to use a ruler to measure lengths and we played a game where we had to estimate and then measure lengths

Forest School Area Design, Construction & Maintenance

Forest School

We worked in our nature area. Some of us used drainpipes and worked together to investigate how water travels through them. We showed excellent problem solving skills.

Science

We learnt about the life cycles of hens and frogs.

 

We observed our seeds again and recorded their progress in our diaries.

P.E.

We practised our ball skills through playing some old fashioned games. We were throwing, rolling, aiming and also counting up our scores. We were all great team members.

Silent Disco voor Basisscholen & Kinderopvang - SoloSounds

Silent Disco

This was brilliant fun! We all wore the headphones and danced away. The hall was transformed into a real disco-it was dark with flashing lights. 

Yoga and Mindfulness Festival

We had a great session with our South Ribble coach. We learnt some yoga poses.

Fairtrade

We learnt about the journey of a banana from where it is grown to our supermarket shelf. We role played the journey with  real Fairtrade bananas and used atlases to find places in the world where Fairtrade products come from.

Manfred the Baddie

We finished our learning through the story of Manfred The Baddie. We wrote questions for a quiz to see how well we knew the book. We wrote a poster to try and find the missing scientist after he was kidnapped. We finished designing our diabolical machines and wrote a description about how they worked.

SPaG

We learnt about how to use the suffix ly.Nice becomes nicely, terrible becomes terribly.

We have been learning how to measure mass and capacity. We practised reading scales.

We finished our learning about being grateful. We designed our own poster.

We planted the remaining seeds from last week.

We worked in the log circle area.

We spotted buds starting to appear.

Some of the seeds we planted last week have started to grow and we can see the shoots appearing. We know that in the other pots there will be growing happening from the time-lapse videos we have watched, we just can't see it yet!

We recorded what we observed in our growing diary.

Freddy Fit

Everyone had a great time keeping fit with Freddy. He also talked to us about healthy eating and getting enough sleep.

Golden Assembly

We had a brilliant assembly. We all joined in with a dance which the students from Japan taught us. 

We also watched some former pupils perform Irish dancing to celebrate St Patrick's Day.

We said goodbye to Yuichi and his students at the end of their two weeks in school.

Manfred the Baddie

We continued our learning through the story of Manfred the Baddie. We closely examined the picture of his hideout and discussed what features an effective hideout needs. We designed and labelled our own hideout.

Manfred has henchmen who work for him. We wrote in role as Manfred as he decided he needed to recruit some more henchmen and hench ladies!

We wrote great descriptions of all the attributes and skills these people would need.

We learnt about contractions, I'm, there's, here's, doesn't.

Celebrate World Book Day 2025 - ReadingZone

World Book Day

Everyone looked brilliant in their costumes for World Book Day.

We read a lot of books and even had a parent come and read the end of day story (Zog) to us.

We also went outside and did a book scavenger hunt and designed our own book tokens.

The children drew the character and talked about different words (adjectives) they would use to describe him.

They learnt to write expanded noun phrases, which they will use for a character description next week.

The children have been solving muliplication and division word problems.

They found out that sometimes they need to share, group or draw pictures to work out the answers.

We went outside to observe and draw the crocuses, daffodils and snowdrops which are growing.

During Maths lessons, we have been learning a lot about multiplication and division.

The children have used arrays, repeated addition and times tables to solve problems and looked at sharing and grouping to help them answer division questions.

We toasted marshmallows.

We also had plenty of time for our own learning and exploring.

The children learnt that when we want to say sorry to God, we can go to Church and have the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The children wrote out the special prayer (Act of Contrition) that is said with the Priest and decorated it beautifully. They also thought about how we can put things right by doing good things (Act of Penance).

The children were architects and moved from drawing buildings to making model structures using art straws, card, paper, lolly sticks and pipe cleaners.

This week we started learning throught a new book, "The Magic Finger" by Roald Dahl.

We read and watched the first part of the story and wrote a prediction.

We also wrote some instructions about how to build a nest like the one the Gregg family built in the story.

We are trying so hard to make our writing look beautiful on the page.

The children learned how to change an adjective into an adverb by adding 'ly'. For example, slow - slowly or helpful - helpfully.

We have completed the addition and subtraction topic and moved on to multiplication.

The children learnt how to find the difference between numbers.

We have also been learning about repeated addition, arrays and how these relate to multiplication.

PSHE

 We have been learning that there are times when people are trying to be kind to us and may touch us,

but we might not like or want this, e.g. when a friend gives us a hug but they squeeze us so tight that it hurts.

They might think it’s fun, but for us, it’s not - because it hurts.

We planted the bulbs we looked at in our Science lesson last week. We also made a forest eye.

This is good for practising our knots and it also develops our fine motor skills.

P.E

Year 2 performed some excellent sequences on the large apparatus.

In their sequences they included a clear start, travel, balance, jump, roll and finish.
