This week in Year 3
In English, we have been learning how to write clear non-fiction sentences and how to group our ideas using subheadings to help organise our writing and make it easier for the reader to understand. We explore light and dark, taking inspiration from our story, Orion and the Dark. Well done Year 3!

In Maths, we have been focusing on our 8 times tables. The children have been using doubling strategies alongside our multiplication method to help them calculate efficiently and build confidence with their times tables.
In Science, we have been learning all about reflective materials, investigating which materials reflect light best and thinking about where we see these used in everyday life.

In PE, we started our new gymnastics topic. The children have been working on balances, shapes and control, and have begun to link movements together to create simple sequences. They showed great effort, focus and resilience throughout the lesson. Please take a look at our gallery to see some of our fantastic gymnastics.

In Geography, we launched our new topic on North America, using atlases to explore the continent, locate countries and oceans, and begin to understand its key features.

FOREST SCHOOL
We were excited to be doing Forest School again. We discussed how to be safe around the fire and watched Mr Corbett light it.
We had some brilliant scientific discussions about the water travelling through the drainpipes and showed great teamwork and problem solving. It was very rainy and muddy but we just got on!

A Fantastic Showing at the Lancashire Football Final
We are incredibly proud of our football team for their outstanding performance at the Lancashire Football Finals. The boys showed fantastic teamwork, resilience and determination throughout the tournament, winning their group with a series of strong, disciplined performances that truly reflected their hard work and commitment.
Having progressed to the knockout stages, the team continued to represent our school and South Ribble superbly. Unfortunately, their journey came to an end in a closely fought quarter-final, losing 1–0 to the eventual winners, Bolton le Sands. Despite the result, the players can be immensely proud of how they conducted themselves on and off the pitch.
A huge thank you goes to all the supporters who cheered the team on, and to Fleetwood Town and the Lancashire School Games for organising such a brilliant tournament. It was a memorable experience for everyone involved and a fantastic achievement for our school.

Our learning this week
In English, we wrote about our first day back at school after Christmas and how everything had changed – what wonderful imaginations we have!
We also started our new novel – The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips.
We began by thinking of the similarities between this novel and Kensuke’s Kingdom, also written by Michael Morpurgo.
We were also introduced to the main character (Lily) and we thought of lots of words to describe her personality.
In Maths, we consolidated our learning about chunking. Many of us found this tricky as we are not confident with our tables or number facts.
Knowing these off by heart would be beneficial in lots of maths areas.
We also learnt how to divide by 10, and described the effect of dividing a 2digit number by 10.
In RSHE, learnt that God loves us in our differences. We considered how we are all different and that these differences should be celebrated.
We then created a poster in our books to describe how we should all be accepted and respected, along with how we should relate to each other to make the word a better a place.
Have a look at the pictures in our gallery.
In Music, we composed patterns on the boomwhackers using pentatonic scales.
In Geography, we discussed the causes of flooding, the impact and how it can be prevented.
In addition we talked about river pollution and the impact on this on communities.
We carried out some research and presented our findings ina poster.
In Art, we produced an independent piece of work based on previous work we had completed when exploring pattern.
You can see some examples in our gallery.

Year 6 Blog - Friday 9th January 2026
Date: 8th Jan 2026 @ 7:53am

Welcome to the Year 6 weekly blog and Happy New Year!
It has been lovely to have all of the children back in school this week after the Christmas break. Year 6 have settled back in well and worked hard this week!
This week in Year 6
English

In English we started reading 'Macbeth' by William Shakespeare. We explored the key characters in the play and thought about whether we think Macbeth will be a good or an evil character. We worked hard to retell the scene where Macbeth meets the witches for the first time from the perspectives of different characters.
Maths

This week we have been working hard on our Place Value topic. We have revised how to round whole and decimal numbers and we have also learned how to compare and order negative numbers.
RE
In RE, we started our new topic 'From Galilee to Jerusalem'. We learnt about the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church.
Topic
In Music, we looked at changing the rhythm pattern to suit the style of music. We demonstrated this using the Boom Whackers to follow the rhythm pattern that we created. See the pictures of this in our gallery.
In Science, we started our new topic all about our bodies. We learnt about the circulatory system and created some fantastic comics to explain how this system works in our bodies.
In French, we started our new topic about our physical description. We learned how to describe our gender, height, eye colour and hair colour. We also translated some character descriptions.

Please complete the following tasks by Wednesday:
Reading - Use your home reading to read every night for 30 minutes. You also have a reading diary that must be used for the title of the book and any challenges chosen.
Books may be changed on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
Spelling -
Spellings this week are from the Y5/Y6 and the Y3/Y4 statutory spellings.
It is useful to write the words down on the spelling sheet, but you could also ask someone to call the words out and spell them out loud. Other ideas include, breaking the words up and writing them down in different colours (accommodate). You could look for words within words (accompany) or think of your own ways to remember the word, for example, spell it aloud using a mnemonic or tune.

A maths challenge based on using known and related facts to multiply and divide mentally
Our learning this week
In English, we wrote a menu for a special guest – the Iron Man.
We included alliteration in the titles of our dishes and a mouth-watering description of the food.
We then published our menus.
They have all been included in a book of menus which is on the Year 4 bookshelf.
We are all very proud of our writing this week! Brilliant work Year 4.
In Maths, we learnt how to divide using related facts.
In addition, we learnt how to divide two-digit numbers by a single digit using the chunking method.
Many of us found this tricky as we are not yet fluent with our tables.
Knowing our tables off by heart will help us to succeed when we meet trickier learning and boost our confidence.
In RE, we made links between the ancestry of Jesus and the Jesse Tree.
In Science, we explored electrical conductors and insulators by testing different materials in a simple circuit.
In French, we continued learning the names of the different rooms of a house and described the locations of family members eg Dad is in the living room = Papa est dans la salon.
In History, we discussed reasons why the Roman Army was so powerful. We concluded that:
Only the strongest men were accepted in the army
They received top training
Their equipment was the best
They used strategic formations
They never accepted defeat
We then created a recruitment poster on Seesaw to entice Roman citizens to join the army.
In Art, created our own patterns taking inspiration from our previous work over the past few weeks.
We will be producing a final piece of work next week.
This week, we also enjoyed our trip to Lancaster City Museum when we met Marcus a Roman legionary.
We learnt a lot the Roman army as well as what life was like during Roman times.
Please remember to bring in a cardboard box and any decorations needed for your DT on Tuesday.
