Year 3 Friday 27th February 2026
Date: 27th Feb 2026 @ 12:50pm
Welcome to your Friday Blog

This week in Year 3, we’ve been busy diving into lots of exciting learning!
Home Practice
Reading: Please read every night at home. Remember to change your school books regularly, we have an amazing selection to choose from!
Spellings: The common words taught in KS1. Look for the tricky bits in these words. If you remember the tricky bits you will remember more spellings!
Maths: Challenges are set on Sumdog. They are on 2D Shape and your x3,x4 and x8 times tables. Make sure to access the fluency challenge to practise your hard skills.
This week in Year 3
What a fantastic week of learning we have had in Year 3!
In RE, we have been exploring two powerful miracle stories from the Bible. We read about the miracle of the manna in the desert from the Old Testament and compared it to the feeding of the 5,000 in the New Testament. The children made thoughtful links between the two stories, recognising how both show God’s care and provision for His people. We brought the Gospel story to life by acting out the feeding of the 5,000 and recording it using Apple Clips. The children really enjoyed stepping into role and retelling the miracle in a creative way.

In English, we have been reading and retelling the traditional tale of Ferdinand the Bull. The focus this week has been on telling the story in the correct order, ensuring our writing flows with cohesion and clarity. The children worked incredibly hard to use ambitious vocabulary to elevate their ideas and bring the gentle Ferdinand to life for the reader. We will be finishing Toro! Toro! next week and are looking forward to seeing how the story finishes.
Below you will find the reading VIPERS question stems.
In Maths, our focus has been angles in 2D shapes. Everyone shared their ideas brilliantly and demonstrated a strong understanding of how to identify and describe angles within different 2D shapes. It has been wonderful to see such confident mathematical discussion taking place.
In PE, we were delighted to welcome back Mrs Cookson and begin our touch rugby. This half term we will be focusing on teamwork, supporting one another during matches and ensuring everyone is included equally in the game. There was a fantastic team spirit on display already!
In Music, the children explored the djembe drums. They worked carefully on creating and maintaining rhythms, learning how to accompany a piece of music with control and confidence. Mrs Campbell was very impressed with everyone's focus and musicality.
Well done, Year 3. Another week of hard work, creativity and brilliant learning.
Have a lovely weekend

Welcome to your Friday blog
As it is the half term holiday, there is no home practice set.
However, please keep reading every day as this really does help to unlock your learning.
You could also practise your tables using TTRockstars, Hit the Button and timestables.co.uk
Our Learning this week
In English, we learnt what an adverbial phrase is and how to identify them in a sentence.
We then wrote some sentences of our own using adverbial phrases.
In Maths, we built on our understanding of the number system extending it further into hundredths.
We learnt the equivalence of tenths, hundredths, fractions and decimals, for example:
50/100 = 5/10 = ½ = 0.5
25/100 = 1/4 = 0.25
75/100 = ¾ = 0.75
We also learnt about numbers to 2 decimal places in the context of money.
In RE, we created a poster to show how Jesus loved and ways that we could show love in our everyday lives.
As it is Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent during half term, we wrote our Lenten promises in preparation for this.
In Science, we recognised that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled.
For example, ice needs to melt to become water (solid to liquid); water needs to freeze to become ice (liquid to solid);
water needs to evaporate to become water vapour (liquid to gas); water vapour needs to condense to become water (gas to liquid).
In History, we finished our Romans topic by researching some of the legacies left behind by them.
We then created a poster on Canva to show our learning, ensuring it contained both information and some pictures.
As it was Children’s Mental Health Week, in PSHE we covered the theme ‘this is my place’.
We discussed what it means to belong and how we can help ourselves and others feel like we belong.
We then thought about our happy place and the things we love.
In PE, we performed out Iron Man dance in a team. You can see some photos in our gallery.
In Art, we created our ‘pocket gallery’.
We used the boxes we had made as plinths and placed objects/artwork on them.
Then, we placed the figures we had created in our gallery and made it look as though they were inspecting the artwork.

In addition, we understood that to find 1/100, we could divide an object into 100 equal parts.
We then used pictorial representations to find the equivalence of tenths, hundredths, common fractions and decimals. (eg 0.5 = 1/2 and 0.25 = 1/4)
In RE, we listened to Matthew 16:13-26 - Peter’s profession of faith.
We then showed our understanding by creating a picture in our books which showed who people thought Jesus was, what Peter said to Jesus, and what Jesus replied to Peter.

We have set two maths Sumdog challenges, one for your fractions learning and one for practising your times tables.
This week in Year 3
It has been another busy and enjoyable week in Year 3.
In English, we began reading Toro! Toro! by Michael Morpurgo and used rich descriptive language to bring the farmhouse to life and recount the dramatic birth of Paco. Everyone worked hard to include detail, atmosphere and feeling in their writing.

In maths, we started our learning on fractions. We placed fractions on a number line and learned that the bigger the denominator, the smaller the fraction, with lots of practical discussion to support understanding.

In RE, we read the Parable of the Sower and talked about the important messages Jesus shared through his parables.
In our Geography this week we further explored the continent of North America, focusing on its physical features.
![]()
In PE, we continued to develop balance and mirroring with a partner, creating and performing our own sequences with confidence and teamwork.
Forest School
One group made bird feeders and the other group did some child-initiated learning. We will swap next week.
We made the bird feeders by melting the lard on the fire. Mr Corbett did this. We discussed how the lard changed from a solid to a liquid by being heated and how it solidified again when it cooled. We made a hole in the paper cups and tied a knot to secure the string.

In our ‘Our Happy Mind’ lesson, we learnt how to develop an ‘attitude of gratitude’.
This meant that we found out how it feels to give and receive gratitude.
We also learnt what the ‘gratitude domino effect’ is.
In PE, we demonstrated unusual ‘iron man’ style movements to keep in time with others.
