Our learning this week
In English, we wrote an informal letter as if we were Michael from the novel writing a letter to his best friend Eddie.
In addition, we learnt the acronym FANBOYS to help us remember the 7 co-ordinating conjunctions.
The conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. We then practised using them in sentences.
We hope to try and use more compound sentences in our writing.
In Maths, we used partitioning and number lines to help us add and subtract numbers when we needed to bridge 10 and 100.
This was quite tricky, but with a bit more practise we hope it will become a little easier.
In addition, we learnt how to measure and draw lengths as properties of 2D shapes, as well as how to measure in centimetres and millimetres.
In RE, we again consolidated our learning of the words - virtue, faith, hope and love.
We then read St John Henry Newman’s ‘Mission of my Life’, underlined our favourite line and explained why we liked it and how we could relate it to our everyday lives.
In P.S.H.E, we learnt what neurons and neural pathways are,
We also learnt how to form good habits and that the more we practise these habits, the easier they become.
In Science, we grouped living things based on their features using classification keys.
In French, we learnt how to name some pet animals eg un chien = a dog and un chat = a cat.
In Art, we began to retell the story of ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ through sketching.
This week, we also attended the Harvest Mass in church on Friday afternoon.
Thank you for your harvest gifts – these will be donated to a local food bank.

Our Learning This Week
In English, we wrote reasons for and against sailing around the world.
In addition, we collected words to describe Michael’s character.
The information could have been written down in the novel, or inferred – that is, we could work it out from the evidence.
We then wrote a detailed character description of Michael.
In Maths, we learnt more about place value. We learnt how to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100.
In addition, we added and subtracted different powers of 10 to and from given numbers using place value charts and counters to help us.
Take a look in our gallery.
In RE, we started we retold the story of Abraham and Sarah on a story board.
We recapped the story in our own words ensuring we included some important vocabulary, eg covenant and faith. There are some pictures in our gallery.
In PSHE, we learnt what is real and perceived danger.
In conjunction with this, we learnt what triggers our amygdala ( our ‘alarm system’ which processes and responds to emotions like fear and stress).
In Science, we grouped animals in different ways according to whether they were vertebrates (animals with a backbone) – mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles, or invertebrates (animals without a backbone).
In Art, we created our own scenes and then sketched them.
We also gave them a title.
Take a look at some of our art work in our gallery.

In Science, we learned all about the skeleton. The children labelled the different bones on a skeleton and were fascinated by how they work together to help us move and stay strong. Next week, we’ll be exploring muscles and their functions.
In RE, we continued looking at the creation story and discussed what it means to be made in the image of God. We talked about imago dei and how we can look after each other and creation to be more like God.
In PE, we worked on some tactics that can help us in invasion games, and we’ll be building on these skills in the coming weeks. Don’t forget that swimming will be back on as usual on Monday, kits at the ready!
In Computing, we started our new topic on digital devices. We explored inputs, processes, and outputs, before designing our own brilliant (and very creative!) devices.

Everyone has been given a reading book this week. Please try to read a little every night, around 10–15 minutes. The regular routines for home practice will set your children up well for all future learning they meet. Little and often is the key!
Sumdog
We have also set three Sumdog challenges — two maths and one spelling. Have a go at these across the week and try to do a little every night. Please keep up some counting practice at home too. A little counting every day makes a big impact on your child’s knowledge and understanding of the number system. This can be through fun games such as counting tennis (take turns to say 1, 2 or 3 numbers in sequence — the winner is the one who reaches the target number) or by singing some of our counting songs. Here is one we sang this week to practise our 2s, 5s and 10s.
Spellings
Your spellings have also been sent home, have a go at the activity sheet on the back and do a little practice every day This doesn’t need to be handed in.

In RE, we started our new topic ‘Creation and Covenant’.
We listened to the story of Abraham when God asked him to leave Haran and travel to Canaan,
We considered the sort of person Abraham must have been, and how his faith, hope and love gave him the strength to do as the Lord had asked.
In Science, we recapped the 7 life processes using the acronym MRS GREN (movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition).
In addition, we grouped animals according to whether they were a fish, mammal, reptile, amphibian or bird.
In PSHE, we started our topic ‘Meet your brain’.
We learnt how we can train our mind and how our brain can grow, as well as what the different parts of our brains are called.
