A maths challenge based on finding 10, 100 or 1000 more or less than a given number
Our Learning this Week
In English, we consolidated our knowledge of adverbs and how they can be used at the beginning of a sentence.
We used 'human sentences' to help with our learning - you can see some pictures in our gallery.
In Maths, we continued learning about place value.
We correctly placed numbers on a number line with multiples of 1000 marked, but not labelled, and labelled positive and negative numbers on a number line.
In addition, we understood that to find 1/100, we could divide an object into 100 equal parts.
We then used pictorial representations to find the equivalence of tenths, hundredths, common fractions and decimals. (eg 0.5 = 1/2 and 0.25 = 1/4)
In RE, we listened to Matthew 16:13-26 - Peter’s profession of faith.
We then showed our understanding by creating a picture in our books which showed who people thought Jesus was, what Peter said to Jesus, and what Jesus replied to Peter.
Additionally, we learnt what the word marginalised means and described how St Damien of Molokai showed the virtues of faith, hope and love during his life.
In PSHE, we learnt which hormone is released when we give or receive gratitude – dopamine.
We also learnt how gratitude can help us to face problems.
In Science, we tested the viscosity of different liquids by completing a liquid race – see our gallery for some photos.
In PE, we performed a well-structured duet which expressed character and explored patterning and timing.
We worked together to create, rehearse and perform duet sequences.
Have a look at some of the pictures in our gallery.
In History, we heard the story about Boudicca and her rebellion against the Romans.
We then retold this as a story board.

Keep up with your brilliant reading at home. We've seen lots of book changes and children sharing their stories from home. Well done year 3!
Your spellings this week all have the ending -ly
kindly, quietly, sarcastically, slowly, angrily, gently, loudly, happily, simply, comically, sleepily, humbly, crossly, hesitantly, basically, quickly, worryingly, frantically
We have set two maths Sumdog challenges, one for your fractions learning and one for practising your times tables.
This week in Year 3
It has been another busy and enjoyable week in Year 3.
In English, we began reading Toro! Toro! by Michael Morpurgo and used rich descriptive language to bring the farmhouse to life and recount the dramatic birth of Paco. Everyone worked hard to include detail, atmosphere and feeling in their writing.

In maths, we started our learning on fractions. We placed fractions on a number line and learned that the bigger the denominator, the smaller the fraction, with lots of practical discussion to support understanding.

In RE, we read the Parable of the Sower and talked about the important messages Jesus shared through his parables.
In our Geography this week we further explored the continent of North America, focusing on its physical features.
![]()
In PE, we continued to develop balance and mirroring with a partner, creating and performing our own sequences with confidence and teamwork.
Forest School
One group made bird feeders and the other group did some child-initiated learning. We will swap next week.
We made the bird feeders by melting the lard on the fire. Mr Corbett did this. We discussed how the lard changed from a solid to a liquid by being heated and how it solidified again when it cooled. We made a hole in the paper cups and tied a knot to secure the string.

Year 6 Blog - Friday 30th December
Date: 29th Jan 2026 @ 8:20am

Welcome to the Year 6 weekly blog.
This week in Year 6
Well done to the athletics team who made it through to the finals next week!
English

In English we have continued reading and learning about Macbeth. We shared the scene together where Lady Macbeth begins to sleepwalk and wrote a dialogue of this scene. We had to work hard to choose appropriate vocabulary and punctuation! We then wrote an independent dialogue about the end of the play, where Macduff and Macbeth fight together.
Maths

This week, we have learned all about calculation. We have explored when it is appropritate to use a mental method, jotting or written method for an addition or subtraction. We have also learned how to use a column method to multiply.
RE

In RE, we have continued learning about the miracles that Jesus performed. We have shared the story the healing at the pool in Bethesda and the feeding of the 5000. We created some fantastic artwork to show what the feeding of the 5000 taught us about Jesus.
Topic
In PE, we explored how to create a counter balance or a counter tension balance in groups of four.
In Geography we began our topic all about mountains. We learned what a mountain is and explored the seven summits by using atlases.

Please complete the following tasks by Wednesday:
Reading - Use your home reading to read every night for 30 minutes. You also have a reading diary that must be used for the title of the book and any challenges chosen.
Books may be changed on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
Spelling -
Spellings this week are from the Y5/Y6 and the Y3/Y4 statutory spellings.
We will have our test on the 13/02/26, after Robin Wood.
It is useful to write the words down on the spelling sheet, but you could also ask someone to call the words out and spell them out loud. Other ideas include, breaking the words up and writing them down in different colours (accommodate). You could look for words within words (accompany) or think of your own ways to remember the word, for example, spell it aloud using a mnemonic or tune.

information, adoration, hibernation, sensation, preparation, admiration, exaggeration, propagation, imagination, concentration, education, taxation, abomination, creation, isolation, floatation, moderation
Counting – Keep counting too! Check out all our counting songs and videos on past blog posts to practise your 2s, 5s, 10s, and challenge yourself with 3s, 4s and 8s.
In English, we finished reading Orion and the Dark and wrote our own imaginative stories inspired by the text. The children then had the brilliant opportunity to visit Year 2 and Year 5 classrooms to read their stories aloud. Everyone did a fantastic job and showed great confidence and pride in their work. Check out our gallery.

In Art, we created our own illustrations to match our stories, which really brought them to life.
In Maths, we continued developing our multiplication skills by learning how to use the grid method. The children worked hard, showed great perseverance and are becoming much more confident in explaining their methods.

In RE, we explored the parable of the talents during our collective worship, thinking about how we can use our own gifts and talents. We also learned about the miracle of the Centurion’s servant and reflected on the importance of faith and trust.

In PE, we continued our gymnastics unit, creating our own sequences. The children worked fantastically in teams, supporting one another and showing great cooperation and creativity.
In French, we continued learning the alphabet and practised our pronunciation with great enthusiasm.
Another brilliant week of learning, well done, Year 3!

In Computing, we investigated what makes a good website in preparation for designing our own websites.
For History, we explored what crime and punishment is and worked on our chronology skills.

It is useful to write the words down on the spelling sheet, but you could also ask someone to call the words out and spell them out loud. Other ideas include, breaking the words up and writing them down in different colours (accommodate). A Fantastic Showing at the Lancashire Football Final
We are incredibly proud of our football team for their outstanding performance at the Lancashire Football Finals. The boys showed fantastic teamwork, resilience and determination throughout the tournament, winning their group with a series of strong, disciplined performances that truly reflected their hard work and commitment.
Having progressed to the knockout stages, the team continued to represent our school and South Ribble superbly. Unfortunately, their journey came to an end in a closely fought quarter-final, losing 1–0 to the eventual winners, Bolton le Sands. Despite the result, the players can be immensely proud of how they conducted themselves on and off the pitch.
A huge thank you goes to all the supporters who cheered the team on, and to Fleetwood Town and the Lancashire School Games for organising such a brilliant tournament. It was a memorable experience for everyone involved and a fantastic achievement for our school.
