This week in Year 3
We’ve had another busy and enjoyable week in Year 3!
In English, we have continued our journey to Jo’burg and the children are really enjoying the story. This week, we have been focusing on using noun phrases to improve our sentences, particularly when describing the beginning of the children’s journey. We have seen some lovely writing, with the children really starting to add detail and bring their ideas to life.

In Maths, we have been revisiting the formal written methods for addition and subtraction. This is a tricky area, so we have spent lots of time practising and building our confidence. The children have shown great perseverance and determination with this new learning.
In RE, we have been learning about the sacraments, with a particular focus on Holy Communion. We watched a video of children making their First Holy Communion and the class responded with some thoughtful and reflective ideas about what this special sacrament means.
We have also been taking part in the Big Lent Walk this week. The children have shown great enthusiasm and commitment, again, have a look at our gallery to see us in action.

In Art, we explored line drawing techniques. The children experimented with different types of lines to create depth and texture in their work. There are some fantastic pieces. Check out our gallery!
In French, we have been learning how to say a range of colours, as well as how to say “I like” and “I don’t like.” The children did a brilliant job practising their speaking.
In PE, we continued developing our tag rugby skills. This week, we focused on games without the ball, working on movement, positioning and teamwork. It was great to see such strong team spirit and encouragement for one another.

In History, we learned all about hieroglyphics. The children loved writing their names using hieroglyphs and learning how they were used in Ancient Egypt.

We continued to learn about life cycles - we watched a real life chick hatching from their egg.
We drew and labelled the chicks independently.

Science
We carried out a science experiment this week. We thought about what a plant needs to grow.
Then we put a bean into a bag. One bag was wet and the other was dry. The children discussed their ideas of which would grow and why.
We decided to put two beans on the window and two beans in a darker place in class to find one which will grow quicker.

In English, we learnt about pronouns.
We now that that a pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun or noun phrase in a sentence and that its primary purpose is to prevent repetition.
We also identified pronouns in a sentence and discussed which noun they were taking the place of.
In Maths, we consolidated our knowledge of the written method of multiplication – the grid method.
Additionally, we learnt how to halve 4 digits numbers where all the digits are even (eg 2864).
In RE, we learnt about the Corporal Works of Mercy - seven charitable actions, rooted in Matthew 25:31–46, that address the physical needs of others to show God’s mercy and love.
These actions are: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, clothe the naked, visit the imprisoned and bury the dead.
In Science, we started our new topic – Animals including Humans.
We began by thinking about what happens to food that we eat and why our teeth are different shapes.
In our ‘Our Happy Mind’ lesson, we learnt how to better understand our differences.
We continued to learn how we can use our strengths in different ways.
In our PE lesson, we warmed up by taking part in a relay practice.
We then played bench ball and dodgeball, practising our throwing and catching, as well as our teamwork skills.
Have a look at the pictures in our gallery.
In our Geography lesson, we learnt about the different layers of the rainforest.
This week, we also went on a trip to Southport Eco Centre, where we learnt about rainforests. We took part in 4 different activities:
a giant snakes & lianas board game to find out more about the features of a rainforest;
a PC game to explore the habitats/locations of the world’s rainforests, completing an activity booklet;
a ‘visit’ to a rainforest in the immersive room experiences;
and a garden fact hunt – to investigate the layers of the rainforest.
In Art, we painted the background and some objects for our ‘still life’ composition.
We will use these later to create a cut paper collage still life picture.
In Forest School, we discussed how to be safe around the fire. We talked about the three things we need to start a fire. We watched the popcorn as it popped and dicussed how the change is irreversible.
Some of us had a go at using the flint and steel to start a fire. Everyone who had a try was successful!

Topic
In Art, we continued our portrait topic by creating layered portraits inspired by Mike Barrett. We had to layer pencil, biro and watercolour to create a self-portrait.
In PE, we have been honing our teamwork skills by playing tag rugby and practising how to correctly pass and score a try.

Please complete the following tasks by Wednesday:
Reading - Use your home reading to read every night for 30 minutes. You also have a reading diary that must be used for the title of the book and any challenges chosen.
Books may be changed on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
Spelling -
Spellings this week are from the Y5/Y6 and the Y3/Y4 statutory spellings.
We will have our test on the 27/03/26

We’ve had another fantastic week in Year 3! The children have been working so hard and showing great enthusiasm for all our learning.
Home Practice
Keep up with regular reading at home and remember to change books when needed. Practising little and often makes such a big difference!
In maths, we have been applying our written methods to solve subtraction and addition problems. This has been a great challenge, and the children have shown brilliant problem-solving skills. We have set some Sumdog challenges to reinforce this learning and improve our number fluency.
Spellings have been sent home today. They all end in -sion. keep practising a little each night to help improve accuracy and confidence.
division, invasion, confusion, decision, collision, television, mission, fission, suupervision, submission, expansion, vision, version, illusion, immersion, corrosion, mansion, pension
This week in Year 3
This week in RE we continued our learning about the Mass and focused particularly on the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The children learned that this is the part of the Mass where we remember the Last Supper and where the bread and wine are offered to God and become the Body and Blood of Jesus. We talked about the important actions and prayers that take place during this part of the Mass, including the offertory, the Eucharistic prayer and Holy Communion. The children showed a really thoughtful understanding of why this is such a special and sacred moment in the mass.
![]()
In English, we have started our new class text Journey to Jo’burg. We were introduced to the main characters, Naledi and Tiro, and learned about their brave plan to walk all the way to Johannesburg to try to find their mother. The children were very interested in the challenges the characters might face on such a long journey, and we had some excellent discussions about why they feel they must go. We are looking forward to following their journey and discovering what happens next.

In Maths, we have revisited the formal methods for addition and subtraction. While the children are beginning to understand the written methods, we have noticed that some pupils are not yet fully secure with their number facts to 20. When these facts are not automatic, it can make the written methods much more difficult. To help build confidence and fluency, we have launched a Number Facts Challenge on Sumdog. Practising these facts regularly will make a huge difference and will help the children tackle more complex calculations with greater ease.
In PE, we began our new superhero dance topic. The children explored how different emotions and expressions can be shown through movement and used this to help them create their own superhero characters. They then worked in groups to begin building short dance sequences that showed their superhero’s personality and powers through movement. It was fantastic to see their creativity and confidence grow as they performed their ideas. We also welcomed Freddie Fit into school this week, who certainly put us through our paces with a high-energy fitness session! The children showed great enthusiasm and effort throughout.

In History, we explored the society of Ancient Egypt and learned about the different roles people had. The children discovered that Egyptian society was organised like a pyramid, with the Pharaoh at the very top, followed by priests, scribes, soldiers, craftsmen and farmers. We talked about how each group had an important role to play in keeping society running and discussed what daily life might have been like for people in these different jobs.

In Science, we celebrated Science Week by taking part in a live lesson all about light and how it can be used to create movies. The children learned how early filmmakers used light and shadow to tell stories and explored some of the clever techniques used to create moving images. They were fascinated to see how simple ideas using light can be used to produce impressive visual effects.
We also say goodbye to Ryoko who has been working with us over the past two weeks. We have learned how to write our name in Japanese and made some beautiful gift boxes using traditional Japanese patterns. Thank you to Yuicho and his students for another brilliant experience for our children.

Finally, in DT, we continued our learning about mechanisms. This week the children tried to build a more complex mechanism using the knowledge they gained in our previous lesson. Not all of them worked perfectly, but this actually turned into a fantastic learning opportunity. The children evaluated their designs, discussed what had gone wrong and thought carefully about how they might improve them next time. This kind of problem-solving is a really important part of the design process.

Our Learning this week
In English, we revised the rules for speech / dialogue and then wrote a conversation between Lila and Rambashi (a pirate and character in our class novel).
We ensured that we used alternative words for said, and that we thought carefully about how each character might speak.
We used human sentences to help us with our learning – take a look in the gallery.
In Maths, we learnt how to double a number with ones and tenths using a partitioning and recombining method.
In addition, we revised multiplying multiples of 10 and 100 by single digits (eg 6 x 40 = 240; 3 x 400 = 1200) and then applied this to multiplying 3 digit numbers by a single digit using the grid method (eg 4 x 237).
In RE, we read the parable of ‘The judgement of the nations’ (sheep and goats) which emphasises that genuine faith is demonstrated through carrying out loving deeds.
In Science, as part of Science Week, we took part in the BBC live lesson about light and moon.
Following this, we completed some activities about light sources, reflection and information about the moon.
We also investigated the probability question ‘does toast always land butter side down?’ We made predictions then recorded the results – have a look in our gallery.
In our ‘Our Happy Mind’ lesson, we learnt how to understand and celebrate differences.
In PE, we practised running with a rugby ball. We also learnt how to move into a space to receive a swing pass in a game.
You can see some pictures in the gallery.
This week, we also took part in an energetic keep fit session with Freddie Fit (have a look at some of the pictures in our gallery)
and a lesson led by the Japanese students during which we learnt the meanings of some traditional Japanese patterns.

Welcome to the Year 6 weekly blog.
This week in Year 6
English

In English we have been revising how to use different types of tense. We have also been continuing our crime fiction unit. We have shared the story 'Saxby Smart and the Hangman's Lair' together. We thought carefully about justifying our opinions with evidence from the text.

RE

In RE, we shared the gospel story where Jesus was arrested and brought before Pilate. We debated whether Jesus had a fair trial and discussed what made a trial fair. We also explored the many names for Jesus in the gospels. We created our own signs for the cross, deciding what we would call Jesus by thinking about what he means to us.
Topic
We had our last visit from Freddie Fit this week and we really enjoyed being active and learning how to keep ourselves healthy!
In Art, we continued our portrait topic by drawing portraits of each other! We held a 'portrait club' session in class.
For Science, we learned what is in our blood and the function of each part.
Please complete the following tasks by Wednesday:

Books may be changed on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
Spelling -
Spellings this week are from the Y5/Y6 and the Y3/Y4 statutory spellings.

Year 3 Friday 27th February 2026
Date: 27th Feb 2026 @ 12:50pm
Welcome to your Friday Blog

This week in Year 3, we’ve been busy diving into lots of exciting learning!
Home Practice
Reading: Please read every night at home. Remember to change your school books regularly, we have an amazing selection to choose from!
Spellings: The common words taught in KS1. Look for the tricky bits in these words. If you remember the tricky bits you will remember more spellings!
Maths: Challenges are set on Sumdog. They are on 2D Shape and your x3,x4 and x8 times tables. Make sure to access the fluency challenge to practise your hard skills.
This week in Year 3
What a fantastic week of learning we have had in Year 3!
In RE, we have been exploring two powerful miracle stories from the Bible. We read about the miracle of the manna in the desert from the Old Testament and compared it to the feeding of the 5,000 in the New Testament. The children made thoughtful links between the two stories, recognising how both show God’s care and provision for His people. We brought the Gospel story to life by acting out the feeding of the 5,000 and recording it using Apple Clips. The children really enjoyed stepping into role and retelling the miracle in a creative way.

In English, we have been reading and retelling the traditional tale of Ferdinand the Bull. The focus this week has been on telling the story in the correct order, ensuring our writing flows with cohesion and clarity. The children worked incredibly hard to use ambitious vocabulary to elevate their ideas and bring the gentle Ferdinand to life for the reader. We will be finishing Toro! Toro! next week and are looking forward to seeing how the story finishes.
Below you will find the reading VIPERS question stems.
In Maths, our focus has been angles in 2D shapes. Everyone shared their ideas brilliantly and demonstrated a strong understanding of how to identify and describe angles within different 2D shapes. It has been wonderful to see such confident mathematical discussion taking place.
In PE, we were delighted to welcome back Mrs Cookson and begin our touch rugby. This half term we will be focusing on teamwork, supporting one another during matches and ensuring everyone is included equally in the game. There was a fantastic team spirit on display already!
In Music, the children explored the djembe drums. They worked carefully on creating and maintaining rhythms, learning how to accompany a piece of music with control and confidence. Mrs Campbell was very impressed with everyone's focus and musicality.
Well done, Year 3. Another week of hard work, creativity and brilliant learning.
Have a lovely weekend
