Welcome to the Year 6 weekly blog and Happy New Year!
It has been lovely to have all of the children back in school this week after the Christmas break. Year 6 have settled back in well and worked hard this week!
This week in Year 6
English
In English we started reading 'Macbeth' by William Shakespeare. We explored the key characters in the play and thought about whether we think Macbeth will be a good or an evil character. We worked hard to retell the scene where Macbeth meets the witches for the first time from the perspectives of different characters.
Maths
This week, we continued with our angles topic. We learnt that the interior angles of a triangle total 180° and used this fact to reason with. We also learnt that vertically opposite angles are equal and that alternate angles are also equal.
RE
In RE, we started our new topic 'From Galilee to Jerusalem'. We learnt about the first two miracles that Jesus performed: turning water into wine and healing an official's son.
Topic
In History, we started our new topic all about crime and punishment. We focused on chronology and learned that the type of crimes committed, and the punishments for them, have changed over time.
In Science, we started our new topic all about our bodies. We learnt about the circulatory system and created some fantastic comics to explain how this system works in our bodies.
We had a visit from the music bus this week! We really enjoyed learning about different instruments and we are looking forward to learning how to play brass instruments this half term.

Spelling -
Spellings this week are from the Y5/Y6 and the Y3/Y4 statutory spellings.
It is useful to write the words down on the spelling sheet, but you could also ask someone to call the words out and spell them out loud. Other ideas include, breaking the words up and writing them down in different colours (accommodate). You could look for words within words (accompany) or think of your own ways to remember the word, for example, spell it aloud using a mnemonic or tune.

We have been learning to tell the time on an analogue clock this week. We now know the times for o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to and can solve time problems.
Ask your child to tell you the time, see how much they remember!
Science
We started our new learning about everyday materials and their uses.
R.E/Art
We celebrated Epiphany on Monday 6th January.
The children heard the Epiphany story and rewrote it beautifully in their own words. They also painted and decorated a scene of the Wise Men following the star.
PSHE
We learnt about how to be safe around medicines.
My Happy Mind
Our new topic is, Celebrate.
The children learned about different character strengths. They picked out their own strengths and some they had spotted their friends doing.
History
This term, we will be learning about changes in technology.
The children looked at various pictures of old technology and wrote what they thougt it might be used for and how it helped society.

In English, we started our new novel – The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips. We began by thinking of the similarities between this novel and Kensuke’s Kingdom, also written by Michael Morpurgo. In addition, we were introduced to the main character (Lily) and we thought of lots of words to describe her personality.
In Maths, we consolidated our learning about chunking. Many of us found this tricky as we are not confident with our tables or number facts. Knowing these off by heart would be beneficial in lots of maths areas. We also learnt how to divide by 10, and described the effect of dividing a 2digit number by 10. Have a look at our gallery.
In RE, we started our new topic – Galilee to Jerusalem. We began the topic by listening to Matthew 16: 13-26 - Peter’s profession of faith. Following this, we retold the story using speech bubbles.
In Science, we continued learning about electricity by making our own switches. We had to make sure we used appropriate materials and made a complete circuit.
In our ‘Our Happy Mind’ lesson, we started the ‘Celebrate’ module. We discussed the 5 main character strength groups
- love and kindness
- bravery and honesty
- learning and exploring
- friendship and teamwork
- loving life and our world
In Music, we were introduced to brass instruments and were lucky enough to try out lots of different instruments. We were also visited by the ‘Music Bus’ (mobile music vehicle) in which we played the ‘drums’ on an ipad. Have a look in our gallery.
In Geography, we discussed the causes of flooding, the impact and how it can be prevented. This was quite topical given the recent weather and rainfall.
We started our new topic ‘photo editing’ in Computing. We learnt how to rotate and crop pictures using the BeFunky app.

We have had a jam packed week...
English
We finally completed our ‘Room 13’ novel and really enjoyed the dramatic ending!
Maths
We worked hard on long division calculations – we will consolidate this learning in the New Year.
Science
Everyone took part in the practical lesson on simple machines which included trying out the pulleys and levers in class as well as building gear mechanisms.
Art
We ended our monotypes art unit with some printing onto collage. We also made calendars and Christmas cards.
Computing
We created some fantastic videos in Year 5 this week. We worked in threes to film, edit and import content into video. The results were amazing!
RE
Finally, we ended the week by reflecting on the joyful mysteries, including the Annunciation and the Nativity, and baby Jesus was laid in the manger in our crib.
Year 5 have been outstanding this term - thank you to all of you! We will see you back in school on Monday 6th January 2025

Welcome to the final blog of this term
We've had a lovely last week of term in Year 3!
On Monday, we were visited by the All Hallows Roadshow in church.
On Thursday, we attended the Christingle service beautifully led by Year 6.
We also spent the last week creating some super Christmas cards, finished our rocks and soils topics and made some fantastic 3D sculptures. Check out our galleries to see some of our learning from this week.

We continued to read the story 'The Robin Who Stole Christmas'. We asked the robin some questions, we wrote a list of the bad things that the robin did and we wrote an apology letter to Santa from the robin.
Phonics
Some of us have been comparing the ee and ea sounds.
Some of us have been learning some new high frequency words.
Maths
We played lots of different maths games including a Christmas crack the code.
R.E.
We finished reading the Nativity story. We wrote in a speech bubble, identifying what the angel said to the shepherds in the fields.
Forest School
We used the sticks to make different objects. Some of us made wands and walking sticks.

Welcome to your last blog of 2024
What a fantastic last week of term we’ve had! It’s been busy and lots of fun!
On Monday, we enjoyed watching the All Hallows Roadshow in church. We loved joining in with the singing, as well as watching the dancing, and listening to the musicians.
On Tuesday, in DT, we created our ‘iron models’. We were all very impressed with our products – each one included an electrical circuit with a light bulb which lit something up!
On Wednesday, we looked fabulous in our Christmas jumpers, swapped Christmas Cards and enjoyed a Christmas Dinner. We also made Christmas Cards and calendars.
On Thursday, we created a final piece of artwork and put the finishing touches to our cards and calendars. In addition, we attended the Christingle service in church led by Year 6.
On Friday, we had our final Golden Assembly and we celebrated the stars of the term.
Thank you for all your gifts and cards.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and relaxing Christmas and New Year. Thank you for your support during the term – it is very much appreciated.
We look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday 6th January 2025.

Welcome to the last Year 6 blog of 2024!
This Week in Year 6
We have had a really exciting and busy week in school before the Christmas break!
On Monday we enjoyed watching the All Hallows Road show. It was great to see all the talented pupils performing and inspiring us.
On Tuesday we had a special treat, as we were able to watch a performance of 'A Christmas Carol' in school. We had a Q&A session with the actors afterwards and were complimented on our fantastic questions!
On Wednesday we made some amazing protest Art. We decided on a cause we were passionate about and created a poster inspired by the work of Shepard Fairey. We also enjoyed Christmas jumper day and our Christmas dinner in school.
On Thursday Year 6 worked hard to rehearse and lead our Christingle service in Church. Well done to all of the children - you were wonderful!
On Friday, we had our final Golden Assembly of the term and enjoyed watching Holes as a Christmas treat!
Home Practice
There is no Sumdog being set for the Christmas break, so you can have a rest and come back fresh and ready for the exciting learning in January!

Year 2 Blog- Friday 20th December 2024

Welcome to your last blog of 2024!
We have had a brilliant week in school.
English
We finished writing our own books. We took great care with our handwriting, spelling and punctation.
Maths
We finished our learning about money. We learnt how to add together two amounts when we had to cross the tens boundary, for example, 29p + 42p. We used Base 10 equipment to help us to find the answer.
On Monday, we really enjoyed watching the All Hallows Roadshow in church. We joined in with the singing and were very impressed with the musicians, dancers and singers.
On Wednesday, we all looked fabulous in our Christmas outfits and we enjoyed our Christmas lunch.
On Thursday,we were in church for the Christingle service, which was beautifully led by the Year 6 children.
On Friday, we had our final Golden Assembly of the term where we celebrated all the stars of the term.
We wish you all a happy and holy Christmas.

The children have been learning about printing and repeated patterns.
They really enjoyed printing christmas patterns.
D.T.
D.T Day was a great success. The children worked so well to make their Tudor houses.
Great attention to detail was shown and a lot of D.T skills were used, like cutting, glueing, folding and measuring.
Forest School:
We went into the nature area. Some of us had a go at making a Christmas tree decoration. Some of us chose our own learning. There was great teamwork, resilience and imagination shown.
Thank you for coming to see our Nativity.
All the children performed brilliantly.
We were all so excited to watch the rehearsal for the Rock Steady concert.

We have had another lovely week of learning in Year 5.
In English, Year 5 completed their fantastic bat reports. We have nearly completed Room 13 and discovered what’s inside the mystery room.
In Maths we delved into common factors of numbers and the multiplication factors of larger numbers.
This week in RE, we discussed why David’s skills and characteristics as a shepherd made him suitable to be selected by God to be a king. This led us on to investigate what leadership qualities are and how we can develop them.
Christmas activities have continued this week with our Christmas biscuit making day. The children did an amazing job, producing tasty biscuits in colourful packaging to give as gifts.
Finally, we all enjoyed watching the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ panto and the Rock Steady show this week. Many of Year 5 took part and showed impressive musical skills. Well done!

This week in Year 3
This week we enjoyed listening to our Ice Palace story, and learning how to write speech using speech marks.
In maths we have been learning to tell the time to the nearest minute. We have been using the Mr Wolf App from teachers pet. A great game to teach the time!
In art we have been creating our own printing blocks from polystyrene and made some brilliant Christmas cards! Check out our gallery!
In history we learnt how people in the Neolithic period started to farm and rear animals. We also learnt why they built stone circles - to track the seasons to help them grow their crops.
On Friday we enjoyed the Rock Steady bands performances. Well done to everyone who took part. You were amazing!

In English, we wrote a menu for a special guest – the Iron Man. We included alliteration in the titles of our dishes and a mouth watering description of the food. We then published our menus. They are to be included in a book of menus which will be on the Year 4 bookshelf. We are all very proud of our writing this week! Brilliant work Year 4.
In Maths, we learnt how to divide using related facts. In addition, we learnt how to divide two-digit numbers by a single digit using the chunking method. Many of us found this tricky as we are not yet fluent with our tables. Knowing our tables off by heart will help us to succeed when we meet trickier learning and boost our confidence.
In RE, we made links between the ancestry of Jesus and the Jesse Tree.
In Geography, we discovered that there are different courses to a river (the upper course, middle course and lower course) and we discussed the different land uses at each course. In addition, we learnt about different features of a river and learnt the words meander, tributary, confluence and ox-bow lake.
In Science, we identified whether a circuit was complete or incomplete and therefore whether it would work or not.
In the last session of My Happy Mind – the Meet Your Brain Unit – we identified what was good for our brains or body, or both!
In addition, on Monday afternoon, we were treated to a super panto – Beauty and the Beast. We thoroughly enjoyed watching the performance.
Please remember to bring in a cardboard box and any decorations you need for your DT on Tuesday.

We read the story 'The Robin Who Stole Christmas'. We have absolutely loved this story up to now!
We looked at the front cover and wrote predictions, we made a warning poster about the robin and wrote a description of Santa HQ.
Phonics
Some of us have been learning the ee and ea sounds and the igh and ie sounds.
Some of us have been learning the alternative pronunications. We have learnt ea in bread and the short er sound in bigger.
Maths
We completed some of our learning checks for previously taught topics. We used lots of equipment to help work out the answers.
R.E.
We continued to read about the birth of Jesus. We read about the shepherds and kings arriving at the stable, just like in our Nativity! We then wrote the story in our books.
Art
We painted the background of our Christmas card. We used the printing technique with lots of different objects from around the classroom.
We also printed with different fruit and vegetables.
D.T.
We made the mechanism for our Christmas card. We could choose between a slider or a lever card.

Welcome to the Year 6 weekly blog!
This week in Year 6
English
In English we have continued learning about the novel 'A Christmas Carol'. We have learned all about the features of a persuasive speech, so we could write in role as Scrooge at the end of the story. We wrote some amazing speeches encouraging wealthy Victorians to donate money to the poor and close the workhouses.
Maths
This week, we have started our new topic all about angles. We have learned how to draw angles accurately using a protractor.
RE
In RE, we have shared the story of Ruth and Naomi from the Old Testament. We have thought carefully about this quote from Pope John Paul II: “The women of the Old Testament were true protagonists of salvation history" and discussed the role of women in salvation history together.
Topic
In DT, we have been working hard to make a felt Christmas tree decoration. We have created prototypes out of paper and begun to stitch and create our final designs!
In Computing, we completed our work on Tinkercad by designing and creating our own 3D models of a house. You can see some of our creations on the galleries!
We also had our final Literacy Kicks session this week! The children wrote some fantatsic articles about the question: 'Is winning the most important thing in sport?'

Have a go at the game below.
This game is for two players.
You will need to draw a number line from -13 to 13 on a piece of paper, and find a counter and two 1-6 dice to use.
Decide who is Positive and who is Negative.
Positive moves the counter from left to right and Negative moves the counter from right to left. (Why do you think we have suggested this way round?)
Place the counter on 0.
Take it in turns to throw the two dice and add the scores then move the counter that number of places in your direction.
If the counter reaches -13, Negative has won. If the counter reaches 13, Positive has won.
Is it better to play a game where you have to reach the end exactly, or where you can go over the end? What do you think and why?
Now change the game. This time, when you throw the dice, you can decide whether to add, subtract, multiply or divide the numbers on the dice. You must reach -13 or 13 exactly to win.
Times Tables: This week there are 100 times table questions to practise on Sumdog!
Maths Task: This week's practise is revision of the topics we have learned about over the Autumn Term.

Spelling Challenge
We have had another great week of learning in Year 5.
In English, Year 5 have been researching and collecting information about bats, ready to write a non-chronological report. We all now know an awful lot about bats!
Our multiplication work has continued in Maths with a lot of tricky work involving factors of large numbers. Everyone has tried so hard with this.
During RE, we examined various artworks relating to the O Antiphons sung at Evensong during Advent. We also listened to some of the songs, including ‘O Come, O Come Emmanuel.’
Christmas activities have started in Year 5 this week with the creation of some special Christmas cards for display in Booths over the festive season.
The whole class also enjoyed a special session of handball on Monday with Dave. Year 5 clearly showed a lot of skill in this session and have also really improved their teamwork skills. Well done Year 5!
Finally, Year 5 went to parish mass at the end of week and spent time with Father Michael afterwards, discussing advent and what their wishes were for Christmas.

We read the story 'The First Hippo on the Moon' which is all about a hippo called Sheila. She really wanted to build a rocket and fly to the moon!
We described Sheila, sequenced the story and wrote speech bubbles for the different characters.
Phonics
Some of us have been learning the ou and ie sounds.
Some of us have been learning the alternative pronunications. We have learnt u in human, ow in elbow and ie in chief.
Maths
We finished learning about halves and moved onto quarters. We learnt that we need 4 equal pieces for quarters. We found a quarter of shapes and even used a slice of bread to visually make quarters.
R.E.
We started to read about the birth of Jesus. We talked about how Mary had waited for the birth of Jesus and how it is important to wait and be patient. We made an Advent promise each for our prayer table.
Science
We sorted animals into different groups: herbivore, carnivore and omnivore.
Art
We have been very busy this week!
We drew flowers onto our handprints to add more detail (see our pictures here). Then we painted our Christmas card for Booths and some of us started to make our calendar.
My Happy Mind
We recapped the term 'neuroplasticity' and talked about how we need to practise skills to learn them. We had a go at writing a sentence with our non-dominant hand to see how hard it is to do something that we haven't practised!
We are looking forward to seeing you all at our Nativity on Tuesday. The show times are 2pm and 6:30.

We have had a great week in Year 3! We learned lots of new division strategies and finished our collage topic in art, using our skills to create some lovely Christmas cards.
Home Practice
It is lovely hearing about all the fantastic home reading and books the children are getting for Christmas. The children are all making fantastic progress and improving all their reading skills. Keep it up!
In maths this week, we learnt the grouping method for division with remainders Even though everyone picked up the method really quickly, a lot of us are still making mistakes with our times tables. Fluency in these will give your children the best chance to succeed when they meet trickier learning, as well as boosting their confidence! We have set some number fact Sumdog challenges on Sumdog this week.
Accuracy + Speed = Fluency.

This week in Year 3
In RE this week we read the scripture about when Joseph was visited by an angel to tell him that Mary was about to have a baby. We created some lovely angels and talked about how Joseph must have felt.
In English this week we started our new novel The Ice Palace by Robert Swindells. We explored letter writing and wrote a letter as Ivan to tell his parents where he had gone.

Forest school - It was a wet and muddy afternoon in the nature area. We showed great teamwork and cooperation. We used willow to make a shape and then decorated it with wool, beads and wooden shapes. Great knot tying skills were shown.

My Happy Mind
This week we have continued to learn about team HAP (H – hippocampus, A – amygdala, P – Prefrontal cortex) and how our brains need all of these to work for us to be happy and calm.
We have been sorting different feelings that we might feel when we are happy and sad.
Forest School
We listened to a story called "Robin's Winter Song". We listened to the song a robin makes.
We worked together on a stone balancing challenge and made some great shadow pictures.

In English, we learnt what alliteration meant (the repetition of a sound at the beginning of two or more neighbouring words). We then enjoyed writing a poem which included alliteration. We also started gathering ideas for a menu specially created for the Iron Man which we will be writing next week.
In Maths, we learnt how to double any number up to 4 digits, practised using partitioning to mentally multiply TU x U, and built on our knowledge of the grid method of multiplication. Knowing our times tables really helped us with this learning.
In RE, we discussed the meaning of Advent (Advent means arrival) and what Christians do during Advent to prepare for Jesus’ birth.
In Art, we made Christmas Cards for a competition. Have a look at our finished cards in our gallery.
On Monday, we took part in our Reconciliation Day. Many thanks to Father Michael and the catechists for helping us prepare for this. There are some pictures in our gallery.
In addition, we also took part in the Santa Dash on Tuesday afternoon, and enjoyed a ‘handball’ session with a South Ribble Sports Coach. You can see some pictures of these activities in our gallery.

We continued reading our novel, The Diary of a Killer Cat by Anne Fine. In the book the characters have to wash a rabbit so we read some instructions on how to clean a pet rabbit. The children found out about the key features of instructional writing. We discussed the use of numbered points, pictures, time connectives and bossy verbs.They planned their own set of instructions and will be writing them next week.
Maths
This week we have been learning about money. We discussed the value of all the coins. We made amounts using Base 10 equipment and used this to calculate the answer when adding amounts together.
Science
We learnt about the importance of exercise. We carried out an investigation to measure the effect of exercise on our heart rate.
PSHE
We listened to a stoey about acts of kindness. We discussed acts of kindness and drew a picture of some of them.
Art
We have made some wonderful Christmas cards for the Booths competition.
The children used tape to design and decorate a tree.
Winners will be revealed at Golden Assembly.
My Happy Mind
Year 2 have finished their first topic - Meet Your Brain.
We recapped our learning, thinking about our favourite bits and what we will try to do more of so we can be at our best for learning and growing. A lot of the class said they would like to do more happy breathing.
RE
We read a piece of scripture from Luke's Gospel about the Annunciation and birth of John the Baptist. The children retold the story beautifully and enjoyed learning that John the Baptist and Jesus were cousins.
This week we have been involved in lots of rehearsals for our Nativity.
We are performing it in Church on Tuesday 10th December at 2pm and 6.30pm.

This week in Year 6
English
In English we have started a new novel, 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens. We have explored the characters in the story this week and we have worked hard to create a character description of Scrooge and of Marley's ghost!
Maths
This week, we have continued with our learning on Algebra. We have learned how to find the rule for a linear sequence and to solve an expression by finding the value of an unknown.
RE
In RE, we have learned about the important women from the old Testament. We have worked hard to create a book all about these women by researching them.
Topic
In DT, we have been practising different types of stitching. We have used a running stitch, overstitch and blanket stitch!
In Computing, we continued our work on Tinkercad and created a pen pot. We had to be resilient to make sure that the measurements would fit a pencil in!
We have also been working hard in our Literacy Kicks to learn how to write as a Sports Journalist.
Please complete the following tasks by Wednesday:
Reading - Use your home reading to read every night for 30 minutes. You also have a reading diary that must be used for the title of the book and any challenges chosen.

In English we have been reading How to Wash a Wooly Mammoth and writing our own instructions. We have explored verbs and prepositions and looked at how to lay out our work.

In Maths we i've been learning strategies to divide numbers. We learned about grouping and how to use our times tables to help solve division problems.
In PE we had an intra-school handball competition. Everyone represented their houses brilliantly with Gregory coming out on top with two wins and six goals.
In art we looked at Matisse again and explored negative space and how to use stencils to create depth.
