Wonder: Illustrated Edition

In English, we have continued being inspired by the novel ‘Wonder’ by R J Palacio. We thought carefully about how different characters percieve August. We have also been inspired to create some poetry based on the themes from the novel - we were especially proud of our palindrome poetry, which is a special type of poem that reads two different messages when you read from top to bottom and bottom to top!

Maths

This week, we have learned how to use the grid method to multiply up to a four digit number by a two digit number. We also learned how to multiply mentally using a compensation strategy.

Year 6 have worked really hard during their first full week of school. All of the children have transitioned well into our class routines and have been working hard during their lessons. I would like to congratulate each of the children for their brilliant letters of application for responsibilities around school; they were all so wonderful that Mrs Wood has given each child two jobs this year! I am looking forward to seeing all of our Year 6 working hard to support the school as ambassadors, eco team members, school councillers, sports captains, liturgy team, housepoint team members and much more!

Thank you to everyone who completed a summer holiday challenge, it was lovely to see the children enjoying and embracing the outdoors this summer.

Good luck! - John The Baptist Community School

Welcome to our last Friday Blog of the year.

What a fabulous week we have had!

Year 6 were tremendously good in their production of Bugsy Malone. It was a huge success and so many people have commented on how much they enjoyed it. We can see many budding actors and actresses, watch out Broadway!

The Tough Kidder event also went extremely well and everyone's help made it such fun for the younger children.

The Bikeability Team were impressed with how well Year 6 managed on the road. They quickly learned a selection of bike skills on the playground, then learnt how to ride correctly and safely whilst out on the road. The next session will be Thursday 18th July, so rememnber those bikes!

The band performances were fabulous today, well done to all those involved.

Next week will be a very special week for Year 6, including the Leaver's Assembly and Mass/Party, the Retreat Day to Liverpool Cathedral/Crosby Beach and your last few days at St Oswald's Catholic Primary School.

We wish you all a wonderful Summer Holiday and all the best for your new adventures at High School.

The 1,000-year-old Boy : Welford, Ross: Amazon.co.uk: Books

In English, we are still enjoying our novel The 1000 year old Boy by Ross Welford.

We wrote some excellent playscripts, a description about 'My Special Place', a biography about Charles Dickens and a short dialogue between a father and son, who were whalers.

In PE on Wednesday, we practised for Sports Day.

The Year 6 Sports Day was a great success today, everyone did so well.

In French, we continued preparing for our French cafe.

In Music, we sang the songs for our Bugsy Malone production. You will find them in the documents at the bottom of the blog dated 24th May (paper copies were also given out last week). Please keep learning the words thoroughly!

Drama - We spent more time rehearsing and singing the songs. It's going well, we are half way through the script now!

Forest School - another great session...

One group learnt about the summer solstice.During the summer solstice, the earth's axis is tilted at its closest point from the sun. This means that in the northern hemisphere, the sun is at its highest point in the sky. It's also the longest day of the year - and the shortest night. This day falls on Saturday 22nd June. We made forest eyes using yarns, beads and wool in sunny colours.

The other group learnt how to use hammers safely. They learnt how to safely hammer nails into a piece of wood then wrap wool around them to make a work of art. The children were very inventive and creative. We also used the Kelly Kettle to boil water for some delicious hot chocolate.

Well done to the Cricket and Netball teams who represented the school exceptionally well at the tournaments.

As a school we are going to take part in a celebration of everything nature has to offer. This is an initiative set up by The Wildlife Trust. In June, we will be providing opportunities for all children to experience and learn about the wildlife on their doorstep, helping to nurture happier, healthier children, and create allies for our precious natural neighbours.

Reflection - GCSE Maths - Steps, Examples & Worksheet

In Maths, we have been working on translations and reflections. We have done very well with this, using the coordinates to help translate shapes and reflecting shapes through both the x and y axes.

Fr Michael came into school to do confession with Y6 on Thursday.

In Science, we learnt how we see things and labelled parts of the eye.

In Music, we revised 'Twinkle Twinkle' on the recorders and began to learn 'Old McDonald had a farm' with a new note F#.

In Art, we had a lovely afternoon making Mother's Day cards.

In French, we spoke about the clothes we wear and what other people wear.

      Tuesday (book) - Wikipedia

In English, we have started our new book Tuesday by David Weisner. The children became police detectives and investigated what happened on Tuesday. They chose witnesses to interview and wrote a list of questions designed to help the interviewee retell as much interesting detail as possible. We will use these to write a playscript and report next week.

Cartesian coordinate system - Wikipedia

In Maths, we have been working on coordinates and geometry. Year 6 described positions in four quadrants, used coordinates to complete shapes and worked out the coordinates on blank axes.

In RE, we finished writing our letters in the style of St Paul to the children in Y2. Hopefully we will be able to read them to Y2 next week.

In PE, we continued tag rugby skills and games. We also had a triathlon session which included swimming arms, riding bikes and running. Year 6 were really good at it, despite the rain!

In Music, the children played Guess the time! and Twinkle Twinkle on the recorders (new note F sharp).

Zentangle Art was fun and the patterns were very detailed.

In History, we learned about different crimes and punishments during the Tudor period and how that changed.
