Date: 4th Feb 2021 @ 3:23pm

Year 4

Fabulous Friday 5th February 2021

Happy Day GIF by Prezzybox

It’s fabulous Friday!

Fridays are now a lighter day with limited screen time to give you and your families the chance to catch up and switch off!

Today you just need to :

  • Read

Enjoy reading for pleasure - take time to finish a book you are enjoying or start something new.

  • Complete the number activity below

This week we have been practising our 3, 6 and 9 times tables on Sumdog.

Please make up your own game to practise the 3, 6 or 9 times tables.

You could:

  • make flash cards to test yourself (cards with questions on - see how quickly you can answer them correctly)
  • skip / bounce a ball in multiples of 3, 6 or 9 and back again – can you think of some rules to make this into a game?
  • make your own board game, based on Snakes and Ladders or a course where the players have to answer the multiplication questions correctly to move on
  • play noughts and crosses with a difference - you can only fill in a space if you get a multiplication question correct

The possibilities are endless and I’m sure you can come up with some creative ideas.

Please share your game on Seesaw, I would love to see it!

  • Finish anything off that you want to upload to Seesaw for me to see

The rest of the day is yours, you’ve earned it!

Remember today is the last day of Children’s Mental Health Week – lets finish it off in style with your ‘Dress to Express’ outfit – please wear an outfit which makes you feel great.  You are fabulous Year 4 – express yourselves in your fabulous outfit!

Don’t forget to look out for the Friday Catch-up video on Seesaw this evening!

Next week is ‘St Oswald’s Dance Week’! A dance video has been uploaded to the website. Please click on the link below for further information.

Well done for completing another week of home learning Year 2. In school, we are going to try to be active today. We are going to make sure we have a full 60 minutes of activity whether that’s through dance, play or the Daily Mile. You could try doing the same at home. Go for a walk and get active.

Today we are taking part in ‘Dress to Express Day’ at school. Dress in your bright colours to celebrate the theme of Children’s Mental Health Week. Use it as a way to express yourself! Self-expression is a great way to relieve stress and free your mind.

Next week we are celebrating Dance Week with a whole school dance project. Mr Mears will teach us our routine (see video) and we hope to see everyone take part in school and at home.

Please view our ‘Friday Catch Up’ on Seesaw where we discuss all of your amazing achievements throughout the week.

Reading

It is ESSENTIAL that children continue to read every single day. This should be for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Predict – Look at the book cover/blurb – what do you think this book will  be about?

What do you think will happen next? What makes you think this?

Number activity

Image result for shopping cartoon

You could help your parents go shopping today or you can choose 6 items from your cupboard at home. After you have been shopping, choose 6 different items each costing less than £1. Make a price label for each one e.g. 39p, 78p. Shuffle the labels. Then ask your child to do one or more of these:

Place the labels in order, starting with the lowest.

Say which price is an odd number and which is an even number.

Add 9p to each price.

Take 20p from each price in their head.

Say which coins to use to pay exactly for each item.

Choose any two of the items, and find their total cost.

Work out the change from £1 for each item.

We hope you all have a brilliant weekend.

Year 2 team.

Today we are looking at comparing objects to 50. Watch the video on Comparing Objects to 50 here and complete the worksheet below.

R.E.

The Last Supper

This was the last meal Jesus had with his disciples before he died.  After Jesus died, his friends would meet together and celebrate as he had asked them to.

Today, people still celebrate this special meal when they gather for Mass.  The priest repeats the words Jesus said at the Last Supper; “This is my body and this is my blood.”  This is Jesus giving himself to us.

Read the story of  the Last Supper. Answer the questions.

P.E.

To finish off our Gymnastics learning this half-term we will be creating a basic sequence using balances and travels (Including rolls). Watch the video lesson here and join in. Remember to give yourself plenty of space to perform your routine.

Year 2 Home Learning - 4th February 2021

Date: 3rd Feb 2021 @ 4:13pm

Good morning Year 2,

We hope you have a brilliant day of home learning today. Remember, this week is all about looking after yourselves. Obviously we can't all compete in the sports we all love right now, play in a band, or be taught to play instruments - at least not in the usual way, but finding a way to keep your mind and body occupied can be one of the best things for being happy and active.

Here are a few activities you could try today:

  • Go camping in the living room.
  • Play board games.
  • Design and go on an indoor treasure hunt.
  • Have an indoor picnic.

Reading

It is ESSENTIAL that children continue to read every single day. This should be for a minimum of 20 minutes.

If you need any reading books, please let us know and we will arrange for some books to be collected from the school office.

Oxford Owl – This resource has an exciting range of carefully levelled books to help children learn to read, and love to read.

If parents and children decide to use this resource, we ask they access phase 5 books. Go to https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ and select ‘my class login’. Scroll down to the red box ‘eBook Library for Letters & Sounds’.

Can you write out all your 2 times tables up to 12 in your home learning journal?

This week we will looking at statistics and data handling. From pictograms to line graphs, children learn a lot about collecting, organising and presenting data in primary school maths. This week we will look at how you can help your child get to grips with basic statistics at home. Data handling at primary school means gathering and recording information and then presenting it in a way that is meaningful to others. It is now referred to as ‘statistics’ under the 2014 curriculum.

Can I organise data using a block graph?

Today’s maths lesson can be found on Seesaw. Please watch the video carefully pausing to attempt certain tasks when prompted by the teacher.

We would like you to go on a coloured scavenger hunt around your house. How many different coloured items can you find? Once you have found them fill out the tally chart. Once you have completed the tally chart, have a go at filling out the block graph showing the number of coloured items in your house.

Please see the worksheet attached and have fun!

Sumdog

Sumdog can be played from home, as well as in the classroom. To log in from home, students use the same details as they do in class.

RE

Perhaps you could write your own prayer to thank God for books.

If you have a Bible at home, place it reverently on a table. As a family, gather around it and read the scripture below:

A reading from the Gospel of Saint Matthew, (Make the sign of the cross with your thumb on your head – to know and understand God’s Word; lips – to speak God’s Word and heart – to love God’s Word)

Glory to you, O Lord

At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at the Jordan to be baptised by him. But John tried to make him change his mind. “I ought to be baptised by you,” John said, “and yet you have come to me!” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so for now. For in this way we shall do all that God requires.” So, John agreed. As soon as Jesus was baptised, he came up out of the water. Then heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and lighting on him. Then a voice said from heaven, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Quietly think about these questions and share your thoughts if you want to:

Q What does this Gospel story say to you?

Q Why did Jesus ask John to baptise him?

Q How do you think John felt?

Q How do you think Jesus felt when he heard God the Father’s words?

Task

Can I write my own prayer to thank God for all the books you have?

You can use the questions here to help you think of what information you could include in your prayer.

You could decorate around your prayer with your favourite books and pictures about your favourite story in the Bible.

PSHE

Today, please complete Thursday in your Wellbeing Journal and have a go at the worksheet ‘things that make me happy’.

We can’t wait to see what you get up to today.

Year 2 team

HOME LEARNING Thursday 4th February 2021

Date: 3rd Feb 2021 @ 3:26pm

Year 4

Home Learning Thursday 4th February 2021

Good morning Year 4.  Welcome to Thursday’s Home Learning. I hope you are keeping up with your Well-being journal and trying to focus on the positive things.  Why not try a breathing technique if you find things a bit tricky?

Don’t forget to have a go at the challenges on Sumdog. Six of you have already completed the spelling challenge and five people have completed the tables challenge – brilliant! Twenty-four of you have started the subtraction challenge and four people have completed it – well done!

Reading

Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes.  Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.

Try and use lots of expression in your reading today.  Use different voices for the characters and think about how they would speak.

Spelling

These are your spellings which will be tested on Monday 8th February 2021. They are all homophones.  Homophones are words which sound the same but are spelt differently.

tide     tied      knight       night          break       brake         fought           fort

waist   waste    guest        guessed     feet         feat

Write the long date Thursday 4th February 2021

Practise each of the words using look, cover, write, check.  Do this 3 times for each word.

English

Today, please read the beginning of Chapter 5 up to page 73 where it says ‘….completely mad.’  PLEASE DO NOT READ ON ANY FURTHER.

A copy of the book is attached to the blog and an audio recording will be uploaded to Seesaw on Thursday morning.

Make sure you look up any words if you are unsure about their meaning.

Write the long date Thursday 4th February 2021

Write the learning objective Can I explain different points of view?

  • In full sentences, explain what Michael is trying to do (why he is making a fire) and how he is feeling about what has happened and towards the stranger.
  • Now focus on Kensuke.  In full sentences, explain why Kensuke is angry and why he has put out the fire.

Write the learning objective Can I write a diary account?

Please write a diary account, in the first person, from Kensuke’s point of view of the fire incident. Consider how Kensuke might have first noticed the fire, how he feels about Michael and Stella, why he is so angry and puts out the fire, and what he thinks or hopes will happen next.

Focus on:

  • Capital letters and punctuation
  • Perfect spelling
  • Beautiful handwriting
  • Including thoughts and feelings
  • Using the first person (eg using I as you are writing as Kensuke)
  • Past tense (the incident has already happened)
  • Using a variety of sentence openers
  • Writing at least 3 sentences starting with a ‘subordinating conjunction’.

For example you could choose 3 of the following as sentence openers: because, after, while, when, although, before, as, if, even though, despite, since

Once you have written your diary account, please read through your work carefully and check your spellings and capital letters.  Also ensure that your writing makes sense and you have not missed out any words.

Please share your work on Seesaw.

Times tables

A times tables challenge has been set on Sumdog. This is to consolidate and practise your 3, 6 and 9 times tables.

Children in school will be tested on their tables today, therefore, please ask someone at home to test you on your individual target or ÷11 if you are on ‘free’ tables.  Ask them to call out your tables in a mixed up order.  This is how I do it in school – ask the question twice, count to 8, then ask the next question.

Write the short date 04.02.21

Write the title Times tables test

Please share your ‘test’ on Seesaw.

Counting

Count in 25’s from 1000 to 1275 and back again.  Count in 25’s from 1925 to 2175 and back again.  Think about what you found tricky?  Write the numbers down as you say them – what do you notice? Repeat this a couple of times.  How many 25’s are there in 100?

Please count in 9’s from 0 to 108 and back again – can you go any further? (If you get stuck, add 10 then subtract 1 from your last number if counting up, or subtract 10 then add 1 back on if counting down). Write the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?

Eg 9  18  27         27 + 10 = 37 – 1 = 36       45      etc

Maths

Click here to play Daily 10.

Click on play game. Choose level 3, Doubles/halves, Upto 500.  Choose the time interval between each question eg 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc.  Try and calculate more quickly than you did yesterday.

Remember make jottings to help yourself

Eg double 128                  Partition into 100       20         8

Double 100 = 200          Double 20 = 40             Double 8 = 16

200 + 40 + 16 = 256

Repeat this game a couple of times and see if you can calculate more quickly and accurately each time.

For the last couple of weeks we have been learning about multiplication.  We have:

  • multiplied multiples of ten by a single digit (eg 30 x 8)
  • multiplied 2 digit numbers by a single digit (eg 42 x 6)
  • multiplied 3 numbers together (eg 6 x 5 x 2)
  • doubled one factor and halved the other to help with multiplication

(eg 6 x 14, change to 12 x 7)

  • found factors and factor pairs

Today we are going to consolidate 2 of these strategies.

  1. First, we are going to consolidate multiplying 3 numbers together.  Please watch the video which will be uploaded to Seesaw on Thursday morning which will explain this strategy.  Following this, please complete the questions on page 1 of the document ‘Maths questions’. Please show your working out and use the most efficient method – this means multiply the numbers together in the order it is easiest to calculate!

  1. Then, watch the video explaining doubling one factor and halving the other which will be uploaded to Seesaw on Thursday morning.  You can then complete the questions on the second page of the document ‘Maths questions’.

When you have completed both sets of questions, please check your answers carefully – they are attached to the blog in the document ‘Maths answers’. Please also write a comment on the bottom of your work to explain what you find most tricky – is it your knowledge of times tables? Knowing which number to double and which to halve? Etc

Science

Click this link to download today’s lesson on the Water Cycle. The BBC clips and activities are very good at explaining how it works.

Year 4a Lesson 5 the water cycle.pptx - Microsoft PowerPoint Online (live.com)

Have a go at making one of the water cycle models. Then try the writing activity on slide 7. You will find slide 5 helpful for your writing.

Write the long date Thursday 4th February 2021

Write the learning objective Can I make and evaluate a model of the water cycle?

Draw a picture of your model and say how well it represents the stages of the water cycle. Can you see evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection taking place?  (Collection is the rivers, lakes and the sea that collect and store the water before it evaporates again.) Use the vocabulary on slide 7 to help you. Please reread your writing to check it makes sense and is correctly spelt and punctuated.

If you’d like to colour a picture of the water cycle, please print the ‘Science - Water cycle’ document attached to the blog - you can then colour and label this picture.

Well done Year 4. You are becoming experts on how solids, liquids and gases can change state.

Mental Health Week

As this week is Children’s Mental Health Week, we are thinking each day about our feelings, emotions and moods.

Today, please:

  • Complete the Well-being journal attached to the blog
  • Have a go at the ‘Rainbow resting’ activity on the second page of the journal
  • Create your own kitchen band – please MAKE SURE you check with an adult at home before you do this!

Sumdog challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A maths times table challenge (based on the 3, 6 and 9 times tables)
  • A maths challenge to practise subtracting 1’s, 10’s and 100’s from numbers within 1000 (a lot of you find this tricky)
  • A spelling challenge based on this week’s homophone spellings

Please make sure you log on and have a go!

New challenges will start on Monday 8th February 2021

Well done for finishing today’s work.  Have a lovely evening and stay safe.

Year 6 Home Learning - Thursday 4th February 2021

Date: 3rd Feb 2021 @ 3:21pm

Thursday 4th February 2021

Good morning Year 6. I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you (children and parents) for your continued effort with all the work that has been set over the past few weeks. Seeing all the super work on Seesaw has been brilliant. I can tell that you have all put so much effort in. Once again, if there is anything learning related that you are either not sure about or want clarification on, please do not hesitate to contact me – we are all in this together.

Today is Thursday, meaning it is the last day that I will post any videos or work (apart from reading, of course) as tomorrow is Fabulous Friday. Therefore you can either spread the work over today and tomorrow or complete it for today and give yourselves a well-deserved rest for the weekend.

Here are today’s tasks:

PSHE

As part of our Children’s Mental Health Week, I have attached Mindfulness Meditation for Children which is a video helping you learn to relax, focus on breathing and be in the moment, especially if you take it seriously. Meditation is a super way to start the day so give it a go.

Reading

Read for 30 minutes. Keep building up that speed and stamina.

Reading activity for today:

  • How does the character change throughout the story? Explain your answer.

English (split into three parts: Handwriting, Spellings and Writing)

Handwriting

The handwriting poems this week are based on puns and wordplay. Make sure you slow down each of your letters to make them form correctly. This week focus on having all your letters the same size (so each ‘a’ is the same as every other ‘a’).

At the End of School Assembly

Miss Sparrow’s lot flew out,

Mrs Steed’s lot galloped out,

Mr Bull’s lot got herded out,

Mrs Bumble’s lot buzzed off.

Miss Rose’s class … rose,

Mr Beetle’s class … beetled off,

Miss Storm’s class thundered out,

Mrs Frisby’s class whirled across the hall.

Mr Train’s lot made tracks,

Miss Ferry’s lot sailed off,

Mr Roller’s lot got their skates on,

Mrs Street’s lot got stuck halfway across.

Spellings

The spellings for this week, -gue / -que words

  • Create a poem using some/most/all of the spellings using any technique you wish - acrostic is usually the easiest (last week’s mini poems were brilliant).

l – let the grotesque tongue argue with the guest

e – even though its queueing for a request

a – and when the dialogue becomes unique

g – go and guess a different technique

u – under the antique cheque we sequence

e – ends the league with only one consequence

Writing task

Can I use the text to answer reading questions?

Read chapter 22 for enjoyment first before completing the task.

There is an attachment, Chapter 22 Reading Task, which has 8 questions to answer. There is no answer sheet but please send it to me through Seesaw and I will mark it for you.

The 8 questions are divided into two sections: retrieval and inference

Retrieval       is where you simply find the information in the text and write the answer word for word.

Inference      is where you use evidence to come to a conclusion (what you think it means).

E.g. the main character bows their head, has wet cheeks and red eyes = they are upset.

Or if the character in a book is packing a suitcase with swimming trunks, maps and sun cream = going on holiday.

MathsFractions Week

  1. Warm up your brain: Counting back in 90s from:

125, 750, 1420, 500, 335

  1. Main lesson. The objective for today is:
    1. Can I multiply fractions by integers (whole numbers)?

Here is the link for today’s White Rose Maths video, Multiply fractions by integers (whole numbers).

Multiplying fractions by whole numbers is shown with pictures and bar models (which you know I love) so please listen carefully and work through the questions in the video. At the bottom of this blog are the Multiplying Fractions by Integers questions and answer sheets.

  1. Arithmetic quiz (1 - 18 questions). Attached at the bottom is a picture of the questions and answers but for this week, I have sent an Arithmetic video of me explaining some of the strategies to help.

History

Can I read numbers using the Maya symbols for 0, 1 and 5 and solve problems?

From previous lessons, we have found out that the Mayans also created their own number system. It is a bit like our ‘base 10’, but they have ‘base 20’. I have attached a PowerPoint, Maya Number System, for you to work through and a video of myself explaining each slide.

There is a Maya Number System sheet to complete which is attached at the bottom of this blog. Just as I have mentioned in the video, you decide which challenge you would like to complete.

Art

  1. As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, today’s art is to Draw Your Feelings which you can do by following the link.
  2. Following this, why not try creating some ‘feelings artwork’ by following these steps:
  • Just listen to some music - my all-time favourite is Pachelbel's Canon (Cello and Piano version) but you can choose anything - with your eyes closed the whole way through.
    • Focus on how you feel during it
  • Keep your eyes closed for the 2nd time listening and with your pencil/colour/whatever medium you wish, draw how the music makes you feel
    • (You can draw for however long you like)
  • Finally open your eyes and see the brilliant ‘feelings artwork’ you have created.

Sumdog – Three challenges:

Title – Can I choose words to use in a policy?

On page 248, Chloe’s mother said she could stand at the next election but would have to change her policies. I would like you to write her new policies for her.

You might want to include things about: homeless, education, health, NHS, jobs, environment, and anything else you can think that would make the world a better place.

Try to use some of the words we found in Mrs Crumb’s old policy – banned, outlawed, deported, introduced, discontinued.

I have attached her old terrible policies to the blog in case you want to have another look. They are on the same PowerPoint as today’s pages.

Here is how I would like you to set out your policy:

VOTE FOR ...

If you vote for me, I will make the world a better and safer place for everybody. Here is a list of my policies:

  1. Homeless people to be given shelter, food and water.
  2. Plastic wrappers to be discontinued in all supermarkets.

Remember:

Perfect spelling

A capital letter at the beginning of each policy and a full stop at the end

Beautiful handwriting

To make it even better:

Add extra information to some of your policies using brackets, like this:

  1. Plastic wrappers to be discontinued in all supermarkets (plastic is destroying our oceans).

Please send me a photo of your policies on Seesaw, I will be looking out for beautifully presented work.

Times tables

Play on Hit the Button.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Click on Division Facts and then ÷4.

If you find it tricky, write out your 4x tables before you start and use them to help.

Sumdog

Go on Sumdog and complete the following challenges:

Spelling Challenge – tion – Monday 1st February – Sunday 7th February

Number Challenge – Addition and Subtraction – Monday 1st February – Sunday 7th February

Counting

Count out loud in 4s:

From 0 to 48.

From 48 to 0.

Maths

Today you are going to be practising adding by bridging ten. There is a video on Seesaw which will explain this and show how you can draw an empty number line to complete the questions. We have done this in class before, so it should just be a reminder.

Write the short date – 04.02.21

Write the title – Can I bridge ten to add?

Copy and complete the questions attached to the blog.

The answers are on the same sheet, below the questions.

For an extra challenge if you want to:

Make up your own addition sums and show me how you could use bridging ten to answer them, you could use higher numbers. If you choose to do this, you could send me a video or photo on Seesaw – pretend you are the teacher J

Year 5 Home Learning Thursday 11th February 2021

Image result for cartoon children dancing

Good morning Year 5, I hope you are all well. Thank you so much for posting your fabulous work on Seesaw. I really enjoy reading it and can tell you are learning and working hard, so keep up the great effort. I have got a wonderful class and I really cannot wait until we are all back together again in school. Have a good day!

Reading

Please read for at least twenty/thirty minutes every day. Talk about what you have read with an adult. Discuss the story, characters and any new vocabulary you come across. If it is a non-fiction book then look at the contents page, glossary or index and see how it helps you find information.

We can issue books and change books as needed.

Reading Challenge: Use the book you are reading at the moment or one you have just finished. Imagine you are an agony aunt/uncle in a magazine (someone who gives advice and helps people with their problems). Write a short piece of advice to the character having problems in the story you are reading. Please do this in your Home Learning exercise book with today’s date.

Spelling

This week we are investigating words instead of said. Please learn these spellings for Monday’s test (22.02.21) which will be after half term, but if you would rather do it before then, that’s fine. If you don’t know what a word means, ask an adult or look it up in a dictionary. To help you learn them, write them down each day in your exercise book with the date. You could focus on your handwriting at the same time.

English

Today we will be learning about explanations and how to write an explanation text.

Instructions tell you how to do something. They instruct you!

Explanations tell you how something works. They explain how or why something happens (not to instruct, the purpose is different).

Look again but more closely at adverbs for cause and contrast on the Adverbs PowerPoint- slides 2 to 4 from yesterday (documents below).

  1. Read ‘How Escalators Work’ (documents below). What type of text is it? – Explanation.

While reading this, notice adverbs for cohesion; there are more for cause and contrast than with the instructions.

  1. Try to find the adverbs for cause and contrast in the text, underline them with a different coloured pencil or highlight them (see documents below for answers).

Adverbs - Cause: therefore, thus, consequently, as a result.

Adverbs – Contrast: however, meanwhile, nevertheless, instead, yet.

Next, read ‘How Alexa works’ (documents below). Your task for today is explained on this worksheet (blue bullet points).

English

We have been learning about instructional writing.

What do you think good instructions are like? Think back to your card games on Monday. Can you identify key features that helped?

Briefly remind yourself about the features of instructions – Do you understand these terms: imperative verbs, adverbs, listing (numbered/bullet points), person and concepts of audience and purpose.

We can use a features list, like a checklist to evaluate instructions.

Today you will read and compare a range of instruction texts, thinking about structure & language and answer questions about this in your exercise book.

Today’s Work: ‘LeapPad Instructions’; ‘Aeroplane Instructions’ & ‘Thinking about Instruction Texts - Questions’ (documents below).

Read the LeapPad and Aeroplane Instructions then answer the questions in full sentences in your exercise book.

French

Today we are going to finish writing our sentences about the planets, if you didn’t finish last week. (We ran out of time in school!) Then we're going to copy them out onto a triorama. You’ll soon see what one of those is.

First, let’s listen again to the planets song because you might be able to pinch an idea for a sentence from the song. Slow the playback speed down to 0.75 to help you hear the words more easily.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-G7trS2qCk&safe=active

You can always come back to this if you want when you are writing.

Now go back to last week’s French home learning PowerPoint (Blog Weds 3rd February) and find the slide with the flowchart - Je décris les planètes.

Use this to finish if you haven’t yet written one sentence for each planet. Now look at the next slide and read those sentences. Can you add any extra detail to your writing using these ideas? Please don’t just copy but, for example, you could find out how many moons one of the planets has and add it to your writing using the model: Elle a …... lunes. Put the number as a word in the gap. (Elle here means it but planète is feminine so we use elle.)

Please now check your writing using the flowchart. Have you used the correct word order by following the arrows? Remember, colours and most adjectives go after nouns.  Now watch this video for how to make a triorama.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu80853TNw8&safe=active

You are going to redraft your writing now onto a triorama. Follow the lady’s instructions about where to put your picture (of the planets and colour the sky black) and your wonderful French writing. Then glue the flap underneath as she shows you and sit back and admire your work! If you’d like to drop your finished work off at school when you come to change your reading books, I’ll add it to the display after it has stayed in quarantine for 3 days. I’d love to see them!

Très bon travail et à bientôt!

Good morning Year 5, you are all doing so well with your Home Learning. A big thank you to everyone who is helping you. Hopefully, you are in a good routine, staying positive and doing the best you can. How is the dance routine coming along? We have been learning it in school and enjoying the music and exercise. We have also played the card games from our English lesson. I think we might get the packs of cards out at wet play times in future. It is really good fun!

Reading

Please read for at least twenty/thirty minutes every day. Talk about what you have read with an adult. Discuss the story, characters and any new vocabulary you come across. If it is a non-fiction book then look at the contents page, glossary or index and see how it helps you find information.

We can issue books and change books as needed.

Reading Challenge: Use the book you are reading at the moment, or one you have just read. Copy any sentence from your book and answer these questions: What tense is it written in? (past/present/future) How do you know? Is it written in 1st or 3rd person or is no one referred to at all? Does it contain any speech? What is the sentence about? Please do this in your Home Learning exercise book with today’s date.

the lowest score is 6 + 5 + 2 + 17 = 30.

Using five numbers:

the highest is 20 + 18 + 13 + 17 + 18 = 86,

the lowest is 6 + 18 + 2 + 5 + 6 = 37.

Using five numbers and diagonal joins:

the highest is 19 + 17 + 14 + 15 + 18 = 83,

the lowest is 13 + 6 + 20 + 2 + 6 = 47.

Year 5 Home Learning Monday 8th February 2021

Image result for cartoon children dancing

Good morning Year 5, I hope you enjoyed ‘Fabulous Friday’ and ‘Dressed to Express’. I also hope you had a good weekend with your families. This week is Dance Week, so grab any spare minutes you have and learn the dance that Mr Mears has put on our web page (Gallery section). Once you have learned it, you could film yourselves on Seesaw. Make sure you post it by Thursday! I'm looking forward to a great week of learning and dancing, so try your best. Next week it is the Half Term Holiday!

Reading

Please read for at least twenty/thirty minutes every day. Talk about what you have read with an adult. Discuss the story, characters and any new vocabulary you come across. If it is a non-fiction book then look at the contents page, glossary or index and see how it helps you find information.

We can issue books and change books as needed.

Reading Challenge: Use the book you are reading at the moment. Design a ‘wanted’ poster for one of the characters in your book. Please do this in your Home Learning exercise book with today’s date.

Spelling

Last week we were investigating the suffix - ent. As we have introduced ‘Fabulous Friday’, Mondays will now be your test and new spellings day. Please ask someone at home to test you on these spellings. Remember to put a mark out of fifteen.

patient          obedient         turbulent           different          incompetent

absent           innocent           excellent           evident            complacent

intelligent      confident         magnificent        emergent         lenient

This week we are investigating words instead of said. Please learn these spellings for Monday’s test (22.02.21) which will be after half term, but if you would rather do it before then, that’s fine. If you don’t know what a word means, ask an adult or look it up in a dictionary. To help you learn them, write them down each day in your exercise book with the date. You could focus on your handwriting at the same time.

laughed          questioned       suggested          quizzed          muttered

joked             queried            screamed           mumbled        whispered

chuckled         remarked        pleaded             grumbled        bragged

English

We are moving on to non-fiction work now. With a focus on - Instructions and Explanations.

For today’s lesson, you will need a pack of cards and someone to play with. If you have not got a pack of cards, you will still be able to do the task!

Have you played card games before? Discuss any games you know and how you learnt the rules.

Cards are a very old game technology (originating in 9th C. China) & are popular worldwide; many games have been passed on verbally or through written instructions.

You will learn a new card game by reading some written instructions.

Read ‘How to Play Sevens’ (documents below). How can we recognise that these are instructions?

Read Instruction Features (documents below). This will help you to evaluate - see how useful the instructions are.

Have a look at the ‘Card Games’ sheets (documents below). Try and play one or two games.

Evaluate how easy the instructions are/are not to follow and which features help make them clearer.

Make notes on the ‘Card Games’ sheets.

Write the key features you have spotted or add improvements to the parts of the instructions that are not clear. There is an example of this on Seesaw.

You can trim the ‘Card Game’ sheet down and stick it in your exercise books or write your notes straight into your book.

EASY: Game 1 is the most accessible (easy to follow instructions).

MEDIUM/HARD: Game 3 needs most improvement.

The date and title are:

Monday 8th February 2021

Can I identify features of instructions, follow and evaluate them?

Please post this on Seesaw for me to see.

Maths

For your mental starter play the multiples game – Carroll Diagram. You can choose which multiples to sort.

https://www.teacherled.com/iresources/charts/carrolls/

Please follow the link below to the White Rose Maths webpage and watch the lesson – Divide by 10.

Print out the worksheet below and stick it into your exercise book or copy the answers into your book.

The date and title are:

08.02.21

Can I divide by 10?

https://vimeo.com/475398155

Problem Solving Extension (optional):

Focus:

Solve mathematical problems or puzzles.

Add and subtract two-digit numbers mentally.

Presents – Answers:

Gurmit paid £2, £4, £6, £1 and £8 for the

five presents.

Art

Last week we thought a lot about – ‘Express Yourself’

Follow the link below and have a go at doing some street art. There are many more interesting art activities to do on the Tate Gallery website.

https://www.tate.org.uk/kids/games-quizzes/street-art

Wednesday 3rd February 2021

Good morning Year 6. We are half way through the week – well done! Once again, there are many tasks attached to Wednesday because our usual timetable would include Reading, English, Maths, French, Music and RE, all in one day. Please do not be overwhelmed by all of this and do what you can today – remember to look after your wellbeing!

Here are the tasks:

PSHE

Writing task

Can I write a summary of the Rip Van Winkle tale?

Do not read a chapter today as I have another story, Rip Van Winkle, which is the tale spoken about in Tom’s Midnight Garden, chapter 21.

Watch the YouTube video of the story being read here Rip Van Winkle. Then watch the video sent through Seesaw where I explain the task for today.

Maths – Calculating with Fractions Week

  1. Warm up your brain: Counting back in 9s from:

725, 950, 1620, 700, 237

  1. Main lesson. The objective for today is:

Can I continue to add fractions with different denominators?

Today’s lesson is very similar to Tuesday’s but with more reasoning questions. You can watch yesterday’s video which should help and then watch today’s video by White Rose Maths, Adding Fractions video which will guide you in answering the sheet, Adding Fractions questions and answers, attached at the bottom of this blog.

Music

Follow this link Beatboxing Basics, to Oak National Academy for today’s lesson.

French

First let’s recap the phonics sounds from the last week by watching the video again. This week, you are going to try and write down the number and colour words that contain the sounds.

Before you start, write the date and learning objective in your book:

mercredi quatre février

Can I use phonics to help me spell French words?

Then write each of the phonic sounds, leaving space underneath each to write down the words that have the sound in. Spread them out on your page. The sounds are:

ou       eu       an       oi         in/un              i           on

Now listen to Emilie again, pausing the video when she asks you to think of the numbers and colours that have that sound in. Have a go at writing the words under the right sound then start the video again to check your spelling. Please correct it if you make a mistake. Mistakes are fine! They help us to learn.

Key French sounds

We are continuing with our weather learning this week.

This week we will look at how you can help your child get to grips with basic statistics at home. Data handling at primary school means gathering and recording information and then presenting it in a way that is meaningful to others. It is now referred to as ‘statistics’ under the 2014 curriculum.

Can I interpret a pictogram?

Today we are going to look at interpreting pictograms.

Create some movements for the following animals:

Fish

Octopus

Sea Lion

Dolphin

Shark

Repeat these actions in this order until you can start to remember them.

CHOREOGRAPHY – Put the movements together using the song for timing.

START

“under the water” – Students can bend knees and move arms down and scoop up to indicate ‘under’.

“under the sea” – students to stand still and wave arms from side to side.

“lots and lots of fishys swimin’ ‘round me” – Students to do their fish action.

PRACTICE – Students can repeat the first half of the dance until the end of the lesson.

We would love to see some of your dances on Seesaw.

PSHE

Today, please fill in the Wednesday section of your Wellbeing Journal and have a go at 1 of the focus sheets.

Please take a picture of this activity today.

You can access your PSHE lesson which has been attached to the blog. It is a PowerPoint all about your Mental and Emotional Wellbeing. Have a go at the activity set or just talk through the PowerPoint with an adult.

HOME LEARNING Wednesday 3rd February 2021

Date: 2nd Feb 2021 @ 2:34pm

Year 4

Home Learning Wednesday 3rd February 2021

Good morning Year 4.  I hope you had a good day yesterday and enjoyed your home learning.  Remember it is important to keep working hard, recapping and practising previous learning, as well as learning new things.  Keep positive and keep working your socks off Year 4!

Reading

Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes.  Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.

Can you choose some ambitious vocabulary from the story which you could use in your own writing? Write 5 of these words down and write a definition for each of them.

Spelling

These are your spellings which will be tested on Monday 8th February 2021. They are all homophones.  Homophones are words which sound the same but are spelt differently.

tide     tied      knight       night          break       brake         fought           fort

waist   waste    guest        guessed     feet         feat

Write the long date Wednesday 3rd February 2021

Practise each of the words using look, cover, write, check.

Then, choosing the words you didn’t use yesterday, write your own sentences using the words correctly.

For example, tide and tied

The tide came in too fast and stranded the children on the island.

We tied the boat securely to the pier.

Handwriting

A video will be uploaded on Wednesday morning.  Watch the video and then practise your handwriting in your Home Learning book.

Write the long date Wednesday 3rd February 2021

Write the title Handwriting

English

Today, please re-read / listen again to Chapter 4 of Kensuke’s Kingdom. A copy of the book is attached to the blog and a link to the audio is below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtCBmU8n-8w&safe=active

Make sure you look up any words if you are unsure about their meaning.

Once you have re-read the chapter:

Read the extract attached to the blog called ‘Chapter 4 extract’. If you wish, print out the sheet.

Write the long date Wednesday 3rd February 2021

Write the learning objective Can I identify effective words and phrases in a text?

Answer the questions in your book and / or underline on the sheet where appropriate.

I have provided some answers in the ‘Chapter 4 extract’ document, but don’t look at these until you have had a go yourself!

Please share your work on Seesaw

Times tables

A times tables challenge has been set on Sumdog. This is to consolidate and practise your 3, 6 and 9 times tables.

Please practise your own tables target using Hit the button. If you are on ‘free’ tables, please practise a times table or division fact which you know you find tricky.  If you are in school this week, you will be tested on your individual target on Thursday 4th February 2021 – if you are on ‘free’ tables, you will be tested on ÷11.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Counting

Count in 25’s from 100 to 400 and back again.  Count in 25’s from 900 to 1200 and back again.

Maths

Use the link below – to play Daily 10.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Click on play game. Choose level 3, Doubles/halves, Upto 500.  Choose the time interval between each question eg 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc.  You will need to write the answers down and check them at the end.

Today, we are going to learn different ways to multiply efficiently.  This means looking at the numbers in the calculation and using the most appropriate method to find the answer.

Please open the maths worksheet called ‘Efficient multiplication’.

Please click on the link below for the video

https://vimeo.com/492101020

Write the short date 03.02.21

Write the learning objective Can I use efficient multiplication strategies?

Complete the worksheet and stick it in your book or write the answers directly into your Home Learning book.

Check your answers in the document ‘Answers Efficient multiplication’.

French

The theme for our learning this week is la Fête de Chandeleur – the feast of Candelmas on the 2nd February.

Download the PowerPoint attached to the blog called ‘Chandeleur Powerpoint’ and read and listen. This describes the French traditions on this feast day and an idea for a treat!

Now write today’s date in your book, or on the document attached to the blog called ‘Chandeleur sheet’ – you should be able to do this by yourself by now. The month is now février.

Write the learning objective Can I write my opinions of pancakes?

The instructions are on slide 6 of the PowerPoint.

I’d love to see a little video of you saying whether you like or don’t like different pancakes on seesaw!

Bon appétit! Bonne fête!

Phonics –

Please revisit all our new digraph & trigraph sounds. ðŸ˜Š

ch, sh, th, ng, qu, ai, ee, oa, igh

Can I remember all my new sounds?

Can I think of a word for each sound?

Can I practise reading a word from each sound?

Today we are going to learn a new sound ‘oo’ – this digraph can make two different sounds. (See the seesaw video from yesterday for an explanation)

We are going to focus on the  short ‘oo’ sound today. Have a watch of Polly’s video to find out more.

Can I write the words and colour in all the pictures that have the short ' oo’ sound? (See attached.)

Handwriting Have a go at the next page in your booklet, which is all about the letter Rr

The Humpty Words of the week are - be, were, was, said

Can you revisit all your humpty words?

Can you write them without copying them?

(Use paper or the whiteboard from your pack.)

Literacy –

This week we are reading ‘The Little Red Hen.’

Let’s warm up our story- Can I join in with the song again to help you remember the story and have a go at stepping the story? - It would be great to see you stepping the story yourself on Seesaw. J

Writing activity

Using the vocabulary from yesterday and the pattern which the story follows –

Can I have a go at writing one of my sentences to describe a character in the story?

(Or you can make up your own character.)

For example,

‘Not I’ said the greedy, plump pig.

‘Not I’ said the gleeful, grinning horse.

‘Not I’ said the sneaky, small mouse.

You might want to draw a picture for your characters.

Remember to use your sounds and sound mat, stretch the words out slowly and write all the sounds you can hear. You can copy the vocab words given to you yesterday when writing them.

Reading – Try to read for 10 minutes each day. ðŸ˜Š

See the reading question prompts attached on Monday's Blog to help you talk about your stories.

Maths – Can I count in 5’s?

What did you notice when you were counting in 5’s? (All the numbers end in either a 5 or 0.)

Have a go at splatting your 5’s them on the splat square? Can you see the pattern? (5 or 0)

Have you got any 5p’s in your house? See how many 5p’s you have by counting in 5’s?

Today’s learning is all about 9 and 10.

Watch the White Rose Maths video and have a go at the activity attached below. (Session 4 – composition of 9 and 10)

Ten black dots story.

Can I have a go at the activity – making 9 and 10? (See attached - Remember to use your careful counting.)

Science -

Following on from the story of Little Red Hen who makes flour with her wheat, this week we will first learn how flour is made.

Watch these two video clips and talk about what you see and hear. The first one shows a windmill in action – how flour was ground from wheat in the old days.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rauJq_LTMYI

The second one shows a modern factory making flour.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8vLjPctrcU&safe=active

The process is the same - wheat grains are ground into flour, it’s just the machinery and quantities that are different. They are both noisy places!

Discussion

What foods did you see that are made from flour?

Did you hear that the grains and flour have to be cleaned to remove any thing that shouldn’t be there such as sticks or metal?

You can have a go at this. Put some flour in a bowl and add something that shouldn’t be there such as some small stones. Can you get them out using a sieve?

Now try adding some paperclips (or similar) to some flour.

If you have a magnet, you could try getting them back out with this. Otherwise you can use the sieve again.

Year 6 Home Learning - Tuesday 2nd February 2021

Date: 1st Feb 2021 @ 3:37pm

Tuesday 2nd February 2021

Good morning Year 6. Welcome to Tuesday. I hope you are keeping well and enjoying the tasks that have been set. Remember to set yourself a target for today – something small to achieve by the end of today (helping the family with tea, cleaning/tidying a room, completing all the work).

Here are today’s tasks:

PSHE

Watch this video, A Journey Through Musical Emotion and think about the different ways that music can change how we feel and express ourselves. Research shows that people feel more positive after singing to music so either use one of these songs If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out - Cat Stevens and Express yourself - Labrinth.

Or simply find a favourite song and have a good sing out loud (just ask the adult in the house first).

Reading

Read for 30 minutes. Keep building up that stamina. It is so important that you keep this your number one priority.

Reading activity for today:

  • Look at the apostrophes in the text. Write down 10 words which has an apostrophe, and explain why it is there.

English (split into three parts: Handwriting, Spellings and Writing)

Handwriting

The handwriting poems this week are based on puns and wordplay. Make sure you slow down each of your letters to make them form correctly. This week focus on having all your letters the same size (so each ‘a’ is the same as every other ‘a’)

Wordspinning

Spin pins into nips.

Snap pans into naps.

Mix spit into tips.

Turn parts into traps.

Switch post into stop.

Whisk dear into dare.

Carve hops into shop.

Rip rate into tear.

Spellings

There is a spelling file attached at the bottom of this blog which covers the spellings for this week, -gue / -que

  • Write out two lists, one for all the gue words and one for the que words. Say each word out loud – can you hear why it has a gue or a que spelling?

Writing task

Can I write a diary entry as Hatty?

Read chapter 21.

I have sent the lesson introduction on Seesaw which explains today’s task.

Maths – Calculating with Fractions Week

  1. Warm up your brain: Counting back in 15s from:

725, 950, 1620, 700, 237

  1. Sumdog – two challenges (both with 200 answer targets):
    1. Mix of 2, 4, 8 times tables
    2. Multiply by powers of 10 and fractions (the more you practise with multiplying by fractions, the easier Thursday’s lesson will be)
  2.  Main lesson. The objective for today is:
    1. Can I add fractions with different denominators?

See the video sent on Seesaw which explains the activities for today’s Maths lesson and the main sheet is named, Adding fractions questions and answers

  1. Maths challenge – More adding fractions (explained in the video)

Science

Firstly, have a go at this Odd One Out activity from Explorify. How many similarities can you see between these blackbirds? How are they different? Which one would you say is the odd one out? There is no right or wrong answer here as long as you can justify your choice.

Unusual blackbirds - Explorify (wellcome.ac.uk)

When you have looked closely and discussed the points above, scroll down and read the Background Science section. We have touched on variation within a species in lessons 1 and 2 but will come back to it later in this topic of Evolution and Inheritance.

Last week, we looked at plant adaptations that help them survive. This week we are going to look at how some animals are adapted to their environment. In your book, write today’s date and the learning objective:

Can I explain how animals are adapted to their environment?

Choose 2 of these animals that you would like to research. Find out how each is adapted to its environment.

Otter,       Camel,       Elephant,    Desert Scorpion,   Arctic Fox.

In your book, for one animal, draw (in pencil!) a large picture of the animal and label it, explaining its adaptations. For your second choice, write a factfile explaining your research.

The headings you should use in your factfile are:

Name of animal: This is your heading so make it bigger and bolder than the rest of your text.

Picture (draw or print one):

Habitat (where it lives):

Diet (what it eats):

Life span (how long it lives):

Adaptations:  This section must be the most detailed!

Try to use all the words given below for your chosen animals. You need to put the words into sentences and may not necessarily need the words in the order I have given them.

Otter - webbed feet, propeller tail, whiskers, nostrils, ears, oily skin, quick, feet pads,

Elephant- trunk, tusks, tail, ears, slow, big, rough skin, teeth,

Camel -  hump,  water,  fat,  desert,  arid,  food,  feet,  nostrils, eye lashes,  temperature , store (They do not store water in their humps!)

Desert Scorpion – nocturnal, burrow, heat, control their metabolism, exoskeleton, sharp claws, venomous.

Arctic fox – fur, insulation, seasonal camouflage, foot pads, sense of smell, teeth, claws, body shape.

Finally, please reread your work to check it makes sense and that your spelling, punctuation and handwriting are of the same high standard that we would expect in school. I’d love to see your work on Seesaw.

Well done!

Things that made me smile on Monday (you could write your own list too)

  • Wiggle and dance at the end of the day.
  • Thinking about the good things in our lives.
  • It wasn’t pitch black when I arrived at school which was amazing!

Year 2 Home Learning - 2nd February 2021

Date: 1st Feb 2021 @ 1:10pm

Good morning Year 2,

We hope yesterday went well. Keep doing your best, having a go at tasks independently, asking for support only when required.  It is important that you continue to work hard, recapping and practising previous learning, as well as learning new things. We have loved seeing all your wonderful work on Seesaw so keep posting.

Try some of these at home ideas:

  1. Play indoor hide and seek.
  2. Make decorations, create a playlist, and throw a family dance party.
  3. Try a new cookie or cake recipe. Bonus idea: Set up a camera or smart phone and film a cooking show!

If you need any reading books, please let us know and we will arrange for some books to be collected from the school office.

We will explain the structure on here each day but please refer to the additional uploaded documents for each specific lesson guidance and resources.

Joke of the day

Why can't Elsa have a balloon?

Because she will let it go.

Reading

It is ESSENTIAL that children continue to read every single day. This should be for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Write, or draw pictures, from anything you’ve read! Big writing and pictures are even more fun. For example, use an old roll of wallpaper to make a treasure map with clues from the stories you’ve read together.

Oxford Owl – This resource has an exciting range of carefully levelled books to help children learn to read, and love to read.

If parents and children decide to use this resource, we ask they access phase 5 books. Go to https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ and select ‘my class login’. Scroll down to the red box ‘eBook Library for Letters & Sounds’

Can I draw pictograms?

Today we are going to look at identifying and drawing pictograms.

We have uploaded an additional document named 'CHALLENGE'. This is only intended as extension work to challenge and push your learning. You are not required to complete this sheet. The WhiteRose sheet is more than enough.

Make sure you watch the video carefully and pause to answer questions on the worksheet.

Please follow the link and complete the worksheet attached to the class blog.

https://vimeo.com/504483835

1.            Watch the video (either on your own or with your child).

2.            Find a calm space where your child can work for about 20-30 minutes.

3.            Use the video guidance to support your child as they work through a lesson.

Complete on the sheet (if you have a printer) or write your answers in your home learning book.

This week we will be looking at adjectives with the suffix -er and -est.

Adding -er/-est

We make the comparative or superlative forms of short adjectives by adding -er or -est, for example: hard, harder, hardest

Spelling Rule
Just add -er or -est to the end of the adjective, for example:

  • quick, quicker, quickest
  • great, greater, greatest
  • full, fuller, fullest

Exceptions
(note: C=consonant; V=vowel)

If adj. ends in

do this

and add

Examples

C + y

change y to i

er

est

happy
happier
happiest

C + e

remove e

late
later
latest

C + V + C

double last letter

hot
hotter
hottest

Note: adjectives ending in -l are regular, except:
cruel, crueller, cruellest

Go through today’s PowerPoint presentation. Look at the Activity Sheet Adding er and est. Can you complete the table by writing the adjectives with the suffixes er and est?

Remember

When the word ends in an e, we knock the e off before adding er or est.

If the adjective ends in a y, we need to change it to an i, then add er or est.

When an adjective ends in a vowel and one consonant, double the last consonant to keep the vowel short.

Music

Mrs Winter has kindly sent us a music lesson that we can try our at home.

In this lesson, we will be exploring how to make different sounds with our bodies and make up our own body percussion pattern.

Please click on the link for this week’s music lesson.

Exploring different ways to use your body

French

We were doing really well with our French phonics so here’s a video to watch first to practise some sounds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkR7BTicoxc

Now we are going to move on to learning the names of some farm animals. Watch this video and repeat the words.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pba8564WZ4M

Attached is a sheet with 7 farm animals. Print out the sheet (or do 7 drawings). Hide the pictures round the room. When your child finds one, s/he should give the word in French. Then it’s their turn to hide them!

Here is a song to finish – Old MacDonald had a farm in French. It’s a bit fast so may be better played on 0.75 speed. See if you can pick up the sounds the animals make in French. They’re not all the same! The word used for sheep is une brebis (oon brubee) – a ewe.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDcgM_U22XU

Merci beaucoup. A bientot!

PSHE

Today, please fill in Tuesday on your wellbeing Journal and have a go at creating a ‘things to look forward to jar’.

The documents are attached to the blog.
