What a great first week back!

We have been doing the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and have done some fantastic writing and art work to go with this.

In maths we have made a garden shop and we are doing lots of work with money.

We are thinking about growing this half term and have planted sunflower seeds. Also, we have decided to do an experiment with a bean in a bag. We want to see what changes we notice each day. We are curious to see if a beanstalk will grow!

Here are some pictures from our week.

Date: 23rd Apr 2021 @ 3:32pm

The children returned to school this week with smiling faces and a great enthusiasm for learning. The weather has been fantastic and we have made it a priority to enjoy the outdoors whenever possible. This week we have been focusing on a new story in English called The Tin Forest by Helen Ward. This book has generated plenty of discussion and we have produced some wonderful pieces of work. We are all looking forward to continuing the story next week. In Maths we have continued to consolidate previous learning and looked at estimating where a number should be placed on a number line. In RE we have started our new topic, discussing how Jesus has risen and brings us new life. We wrote a diary about the resurrection of Jesus from the tomb. In Science we have started our new topic

Year 3 Home Practice 23rd April 2021

Date: 23rd Apr 2021 @ 12:21pm

We have had a lovely week in Year 3. We all came back ready to learn and looking even more grown up than before.

This week we have made the most of the sunshine with outdoor English lessons, playing on the field, 5 minutes of running every afternoon, PE, and planting seeds. In PE we have started to practise striking and fielding skills. This week we were playing throwing a catching games with a tennis ball. If you have a tennis ball or a small ball at home, it would be great to practise with somebody.

We celebrated Earth Day on Thursday with some geography and art work. We talked about how important it is to look after our earth every day so that future generations can enjoy it. We came up with some ideas including using less plastic, recycling, walking or cycling to school, using less electricity, and eating less meat.

What a great start to the Summer Term Year 5! You all look very smart in your summer uniforms and have come back enthusiastic and ready to learn. It was lovely to be outside doing cricket and tennis in the sunshine during our PE lesson. I was impressed with your throwing, catching and racket/bat skills. In English, we are continuing our work on the novel, Room 13 by Robert Swindells and you wrote some creepy descriptions of what you think was inside room 13. The poems for Earth Day were also very good with fantastic vocabulary choices. In Maths, we worked on adding multiples of 10 to 6-digit numbers, partitioning 7-digit numbers and decimals. For Outdoor Learning, we planted some wild flower seeds which will look great on the school grounds when fully grown.

Reading

Please read for at least twenty/thirty minutes every evening. Talk about what you have read with an adult. Discuss the story, characters and any new vocabulary you come across. If it is a non-fiction book, look at the contents page, glossary or index and see how it helps you find more information.

Y5 book changing day is Friday. Although, some children may change books at different times, so always bring your book bag into school every day. Remember to sign when you have finished a book, it makes it much easier to issue new books.

5 little-known social media mark... - News - What Mobile

Using social media websites is among the most common activity of today's children and adolescents. Any website that allows social interaction is considered a social media site, including social networking sites such as Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat and Twitter; gaming sites and virtual worlds such as Club Penguin, Second Life, and the Sims; video sites such as YouTube; and blogs. Such sites offer today's youth a portal for entertainment and communication and have grown exponentially in recent years. For this reason, it is important that parents become aware of the nature of social media sites, given that not all of them are healthy environments for children and adolescents. - From the American Academy of Pediatrics

Year 6 - Happy Easter

Date: 1st Apr 2021 @ 2:55pm

Welcome to the last Year 6 blog this spring term. We are so pleased with everyone’s effort over a tricky term but now is the time to get rested, hopefully get out more (as the weather improves) and prepare yourself for an active last 12 weeks in Year 6.

Our learning in Year 6 this week:

  • In PSHE, we discussed our challenges and hopes for Year 7 and how we can use the strategies we have learnt over the last few weeks to combat any challenges that might affect our mental health.
  • Once again, do not forget to see our new Online Safety - 31st March  blog where we have teamed up with the National Online Safety which provides many resources for children, staff and parents.
  • In Maths, we have been working out the perimeter of squares, rectangles and triangles, as well as learning how to use quicker multiplication and division strategies for larger numbers.
  • In English, we have completed the novel, Skellig, which has very challenging themes throughout and discussed what we thought about the book in a short book review.
  • As it has been Holy Week, we have read the story of what Jesus went through and discussed the possible reasons of why Judas betrayed him.
  • In Art, we have all completed our mosaic Mayan masks, which you can see on our Year 6 gallery page.
  • In PE, we have completed the topic of invasion games for Hockey and Netball where we used our ‘character’ skills of teamwork, resilience, patience and respect to help us all work together in mini teams.
  • In Music, we have been continuing our practising B, A and G chords on the recorder.
  • In Science, we investigated different ways (using an app, smart watch or checking our pulse) to measure our pulse rate before and after exercise.
  • Finally in History, we conducted our own gameshow of ‘Who Wants to be a Mayaniare’ based on all the learning from our topic, The Mayans. The children did very well as nearly eveyone became Mayanaires!

Well done to 97% of you for changing your book this week – a great end to the term!

I have not set up any Sumdog challenges for the Easter holidays as you all deserve a break. There is only one thing I ask you to do every day, if possible, and that is to …

Doesn’t time go fast – I can’t believe we’ve been back in school for 3 full weeks already, and there’s only one week to go before we break up for Easter!

We now have an Online Safety Blog on our website.  This is updated each Wednesday.  Please have a look at the blog as different guides will be uploaded weekly.  This week’s guides relate to WhatsApp, Fortnite and Comic Relief. We all have an important role in keeping our children safe in our ever growing online world.

Another great week in Year 4 made even better by a bit of lovely sunshine on Wednesday! This week, we have:

  • been learning about place value, both whole numbers and decimals, as well as discovering more about Roman Numerals
  • written some very descriptive pieces about the Ceremony of the Full Moon, which was stimulated by our current novel ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter
  • competed in an inter-class athletics competition between ourselves and Year 3 – we are incredibly proud of ourselves for taking part and being great competitors
  • made PowerPoint presentations about different landmarks in Italy, as part of our geography topic, and started to present these to the class
  • written our own prayers for Palm Sunday

HOME PRACTICE

Please complete a little home practice every night as this is the key to success!

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Wednesday 31st March 2021.  Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

Use the link here to practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’. This is another excellent way to practise your tables.

Spellings

Your new spellings are all from the Year 3 / 4 Spelling list – a list of words which children should be able to read and spell by the time they leave Year 4.  The spellings will be tested on Thursday 1st April 2021.  There are some quite tricky words, so please practise them carefully each evening.

experience   important    ordinary       remember    caught

experiment  increase       particular    separate      certain

Sumdog Challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A spelling challenge based on the above spellings
  • A maths challenge related to decimals (tenths)

We are all looking forward to continuing the story next week. In Maths we have continued to consolidate previous learning, whilst also discovering new strategies for addition and subtraction. In RE we have discussed the events of Palm Sunday. We created our own palm leaves and crosses before re-enacting the events of that special day. In Science we have looked at the strength of different pieces of paper. We made predictions, developed an experiment and recorded the results. We have had a superb week!

How to draw a sunshine clipart

We have been really enjoying all our learning this week again and we are now used to all being back together keeping the Golden Rules. We have enjoyed our playtimes in the sunnier weather and have been great friends to each other.

Our story this week was The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. We all loved following the story of the seed and all the obstacles it had to ovecome before it could start to grow. We have done some super retelling of the story with Mr Campbell and lots of great writing. We could also use all our Science learning we've been doing with Mrs Quilliam to help us to understand the seed's journey.

Thursday Giveaway: The Tiny Seed | Carle Museum

In R.E. we have continued our learning through our topic of Change. We talked about being kind to each other.

On Tuesday we had some quiet time as it was a National Day of Reflection. We thought about what we could look forward to.

We all enjoyed our French with Mrs Quilliam and our Music with Mrs Winter.

Mrs Corbett and Mrs Anderson joined Mr Campbell for P.E. this week. There was super skills development in rolling, throwing, running, dribbling and catching.

Nancy Reuben Primary School - Specialist PE coaching

In our Maths learning we were looking at doubling and halving numbers. We also played games which involved using our number facts and taking turns.

Year 5 Home Practice Friday 26th March 2021

Palm Sunday 2020: What is Palm Sunday? How to celebrate it? - Time Bulletin

A big well done to all those who completed their Home Practice last week. As you know, every Friday It will be posted on our class blog (school website). It will always be reading (reading journal), spelling and some Sumdog challenges. Please work hard to complete your home practice, it really makes a difference and helps to reinforce what has been learnt at school.

A fantastic week of learning Year 5, you have worked very hard. In Maths, we have continued our work on decimals. The children have been enjoying our new novel, Room 13 by Robert Swindells. It’s not too scary, yet! We have also looked at story structure in preparation for writing spooky, short stories. In Geography, We have learnt about the different geographical features of North America. It was great to hear that some of the children had visited some of these fascinating places, so we had a great discussion in class. The Year 5/6 Athletics Competition went really well and everyone participated to the best of their ability.

I have introduced a ‘Reading Journal’ to the children. They are familiar with this from previous year groups. At the front of the journal, there are activities for the children to do using their current book or one they have just finished. They may choose an activity, complete it in their journal (best presentation and handwriting!) and colour/highlight the square to show they have done it. The children must complete one activity per week.

The first few ‘Reading Journal’ activities have been very good and show me that the children have a good understanding of the text they have read. They are also beautifully presented. Well done, keep up the great work!

Maths

This week’s challenge on Sumdog is based on the equivalence of tenths and hundredths and times tables practice. We will have a mixed times tables test every Monday/Tuesday.

Spelling

The Sumdog spelling challenge is focused on tricky words (different from the spelling test words below).

Please learn these spellings for next Thursday (1.4.21): If you don’t know what a word means, look it up in a dictionary or ask an adult.

We are investigating the Year 5/6 Spelling List.

sincere           stomach           symbol               thorough            vegetable

sincerely        sufficient         system               twelfth              vehicle

soldier            suggest            temperature        variety              yacht

Spelling, Punctuation And Grammar (SPAG)

This week’s challenge on Sumdog (grammar section) is based on the perfect tense.

For our DT project, we will be making Cams mechanisms and toys next week (Easter theme). Please could you bring either a cereal or shoe box into school.

Have a lovely weekend, Miss Gravili.

Year 4

Home Practice 19th March 2021

We will now be reverting back to Home Practice which can be found on the Year 4 Class Page each Friday.

Home Practice will provide a short insight into our learning from the week, as well as tasks to be completed.  These will include reading, tables, spellings and Sumdog challenges.  It is important that you compete these tasks, as they will help you to progress further with your learning.

We have had a super week in Year 4.  We’ve revisited place value in Maths and refined some counting skills, especially counting in 4’s and 8’s. In English, we wrote a letter from a character to her father and tried to think carefully about the types of sentence we were writing – whether it was a command, statement, question or exclamation.  Our science topic has been very interesting – we recorded results from an experiment to see the effect of different liquids on egg shells and were amazed by the results! In addition, we made our own digestive system – it was gruesome!

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

You can find even more books to read on our website.  Go to Year 4, Home Learning and click on Oxford Owl.  Use the class login and password and explore lots of books to read.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Wednesday (24th March 2021).  Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

You can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’.  Select the times tables or division button and then the table that you want to practise.  This is an excellent way to practise your tables.  Either type in ‘hit the button’ (the game is on Top Marks) or use the link below:

The spellings this week are irregular plurals.  Each time ‘ves’ needs to be added to the word ending in ‘f’ or ‘fe’, to spell the plural. These words will be tested on Thursday (25th March 2021).  We have discussed different strategies to learn spellings in class, or you can always use ‘Look say cover write check’.

calf              calves          half             halves          knife           knives

leaf             leaves          shelf            shelves        thief           thieves

yourself       yourselves    themselves
