Year 6 Home Practice - Friday 11th June 2021

Date: 11th Jun 2021 @ 4:53pm

Welcome to our first blog after the May half term. Year 6 have had a great time buddying with the infants at lunch times and coaching the Year 2’s with various games. Every single Year 6 has received a glowing report from the lunch time staff.

Reminders:

  • Each child has come home with information about Borwick Hall. Please return the reply slip, the medical form and the photo consent form by Monday 14th June.

Our learning in Year 6 this week:

  • In Maths, we have been recapping our knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages and how they can relate to each other as equivalences.
  • In English, our story of The Lost Magician has our main characters on different quests, where we discussed each character's dilemma and what they would do.
  • In PE, we have completed our first practice of Year 6 Sports Day and learnt how to support the other classes when the Year 6’s become the ‘Sports Captains’ for each year group.
  • In Music, we have now practiced every song for the production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and have also started learning new songs for our World Music Day, with African drums.
  • In French, we have been practicing a new song for our Leavers Assembly.
  • For Science (and PSHE), we continued our discussion of the effects and risks involved in taking legal (eg caffeine) and illegal drugs using guidance from the PSHE Association. Once again, we stressed the importance of talking to a trusted adult about any questions or worries the children have.
  • In Computing, we have used the app, ‘Clips’, on the iPads where we created an video between an interviewer and an evacuee.
  • Finally in History, we learnt about real life accounts from young evacuees and what happened to them. We then wrote a letter as an evacuee to our parents and published them on the new laptops.

Year 5 Home Practice Friday 11th June 2021

St.Oswald's on Twitter: "On Sunday it will be a year since Mrs Briggs sadly died. We will remember her with great fondness.#lovenature #teamoswald ??????… https://t.co/4EVQQlNqIb"

A very busy week for Year 5, and we really enjoyed being outside in the lovely sunshine for outdoor learning (pond visit) and PE (Sports Day Practice).  We finished our novel, Boy by Roald Dahl and learnt about the old game he used to play called ‘Fives’. I think some of the children would like to learn how to play it! A big well done for working so hard on your spellings, it’s great to see such a massive improvement. In Maths, we worked on percentages, fractions and decimals. The posters in RE about, ‘Being one of God’s people’ were so thoughtful and interesting as were our modern-day Beatitudes. Well done everyone, keep up the excellent work.

Reading

Please read for at least twenty/thirty minutes every evening.

Remember to complete your ‘Reading Journal’ task. At the front of the journal there are activities for you to do using your current book or one you have just finished. Choose an activity, complete it in your journal (best presentation and handwriting!) and colour/highlight the square to show you have done it. Complete one activity per week.

Maths

This week’s challenges on Sumdog are based on percentages, fractions and decimals, and division facts. We will have a division facts test on Friday (18.6.21).

Spelling

There will be no Sumdog spelling challenge this week, so please spend extra time learning the spellings below.

Please learn these spellings for Friday (18.6.21): If you don’t know what a word means, look it up in a dictionary or ask an adult.

We are investigating nouns and verbs.

interest     reason            transport          damage        charge

object        silence           challenge           function       balance

scratch       surprise        influence            produce       broadcast

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG)

This week’s challenge on Sumdog (grammar section) is based on prepositions. Although we have not spent time on them this week, I’d like you to have a go. I know you will be able to do it!

Have a lovely weekend Year 5 and enjoy the nice weather, see you on Monday.

Miss Gravili

HOME PRACTICE 11th June 2021

Date: 11th Jun 2021 @ 3:55pm

Year 4

Home Practice 11th June 2021

A fantastic week back after half term – and hasn’t the weather been wonderful too!  In Maths, we learnt more about fractions. We found fractions of amounts and started to find out more about equivalent fractions using different manipulatives, such as paper plates! In English, we started our new novel, Bill’s New Frock. We made predictions about the story and then wrote a diary account as if we were Bill. We enjoyed going on a nature trail to the pond and spotting the wildlife down there – we even saw a frog and some damsel flies.  We started our new History topic, Anglo-Saxons and found out more about where these invaders came from and why they settled in Britain.

Keep up the good work Year 4!

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Wednesday (16th June 2021).  Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

You can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’.  Select the times tables or division button and then the table that you want to practise.  This is an excellent way to practise your tables.  Either type in ‘hit the button’ (the game is on Top Marks) or use the link below:

Hit the Button

Spellings

This week we are learning how to use an apostrophe correctly when it shows possession, therefore there are no words to learn.  We have however learnt the rules for using apostrophes, depending on whether the noun is singular or plural.  A grammar challenge relating to apostrophes and plurals is on Sumdog to help you practise this rule.

Sumdog Challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A grammar challenge based on plurals and apostrophes
  • A maths competition based on tenths and hundredths
  • A maths times table challenge (based on all the times tables)

Please make sure you log on and have a go!

Friday 11th June

Date: 11th Jun 2021 @ 3:49pm

We have had a great week back in school and the sun has been shining!

Our story this week has been We're going on a Bear Hunt. We have sequenced the story, written sentences about the adventures and retold it to a song.

In maths we have been ordering random numbers to 20, careful counting and matching the amounts to the number.

We have been building homes for bears, been on a bear hunt finding a hidden sentence, done self portraits, started sports day races and in French we found France on a map and travelled there on different transports.

Year 2 Home Practice - 11th June 2021

Date: 11th Jun 2021 @ 12:58pm

We have had a lovely return to school. We have enjoyed the glorious weather, making sure to utilise play time on the field. Year 2 have had a great time working with Year 6 at lunch time. Year 6 have been coaching the children, showing them lots of enjoyable games. Thanks Year 6! This week in English we started a new story, Esio Trot. The children produced some great pieces of work and we can’t wait to find out what happens next week. In Maths, we have consolidated previous learning and we have focused on multiplication. We have practised using arrays and we understand that multiplication is the same as repeated addition. We are beginning our new topic in PE – Athletics. We practised some throwing skills and even managed to have a go at a few Sports Day events. We are all looking forward to an exciting final summer term!

We have set some new Sum Dog challenges. Please login in and have a go. You will receive dojos for going on and completing the work set.

Online Safety - June 2021

Date: 9th Jun 2021 @ 2:25pm

Internet Safety

Keeping our children safe in the online space is of ever growing importance. From phones to consoles, our children are exposed to more online risk than ever and it is important that we adults keep up to date to ensure our children are prepared for all they meet online. Here is an interesting article on Internet Security professionals teach their children about internet safety.

How do I keep my children safe online? What the security experts tell their kids

Below we have attached two guides on how to set up your child's phone for privacy. We teach the children not to share their information when online, however social platforms and games will take data from users unknowingly.

"If its free, you're paying with your information."

Year 2 Home Practice - 28th May 2021

Date: 28th May 2021 @ 4:17pm

What a brilliant summer term we have had so far. You all deserve a well-earned break. Let’s hope for some lovely weather. This week in English we have finished Georges Marvellous Medicine. We have created a newspaper report about the events on the farm and we have retold the story using images as prompts. In Maths, we focused on number patterns and statistics. We looked at questions like ‘How many more children like bananas than grapes?’. These questions can be tricky but we all did an excellent job. We have now finished our striking and fielding unit in PE and the children have had great fun playing a striking game on the yard. Teamwork was key and they did a great job catching and fielding. We had a lovely visit from Year 1 this week. They produced some amazing stories and read them out to their Year 2 buddies. Great listening and encouragement from everyone. We read a book in French about people who wear different hats for their jobs. Then we made a paper hat and decorated it in the style of a job of our choice. We then wore our hats and said a sentence about who we were in french eg Je suis un contructeur - I am a builder. We have also enjoyed taking part in Orienteering Week. The children had a map of the school and had to find a series of letters that spelt out a secret word. What a brilliant half term, full of learning, laughter and fun.

You all looked fantastic as teachers!

We hope you have a relaxing half term. Enjoy the sun and stay safe.

The Year 2 team

Year 6 Home Practice - Friday 28th May 2021

Date: 28th May 2021 @ 4:01pm

This has been a great week for Year 6 as they have been biking every day, trying to complete their ‘Passport to Safer Cycling’ certificates for module 1, 2 and 3. They have learnt how to start and stop their bike, road positioning and signalling, turning left and right at junctions, emerging safely from junctions and traffic awareness. Everyone has worked really hard and should be proud of their progress (do not forget to look out for the pictures on our Year 6 gallery page).

Year 6 have completed the Cross Curricular Orienteering National Competition, where they had to navigate different maps and solve maths problems. They then became super sport leaders in organising, preparing and delivering it to Years 3, 4 and 5, which was highly praised by all the teachers.

Also, the leavers’ hoodies arrived this Monday. Please check out all the pictures on the Year 6 gallery as they all look great on everyone.

As it is half term, I have just three tasks for you to complete:

    • Please keep this up for 30 minutes a day

  • Sumdog – Times tables mixture
    • This activity is a mixture of many times tables with 200 correct answers as a target. This is to help you keep practising so you are ready for the fractions, decimals and percentages work we will cover in the first two weeks back.
  • Bike ride – Use what you have learnt this week to go for a ride with someone you trust and remember to keep safe. I cannot wait to hear where you have been this half term.

We hope you have a great week off. Keep safe and be well rested for your last 6 weeks of primary school.

Happy half term!

We finished off our Lighthouse Keeper stories and read them to the Year 2 children. They were really impressed and listened very well.

Our new story this week was called Flotsam. It is an unusual book as it only has pictures so we had to look carefully to tell the story ourselves. We have been tryng really hard to form our letters correctly and to spell even more Tricky Words.

Take One Book Flotsam by David Wiesner

In Maths we have been learning how to Multiply numbers and looked at how counting groups can help us. We have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Well done to Alfie G for his Sumdog award this week!

HOME PRACTICE 21st May 2021

Date: 21st May 2021 @ 4:03pm

Year 4

Home Practice 21st May 2021

Keep up the good work Year 4!

In maths this week, we have revisited mental strategies for subtraction and learnt the compact written method.  In English we wrote an informal letter to our friend Poleng and practised using inverted commas (speech marks).  Some children gave a lovely class worship to finish our RE topic about Pentecost and New Life. This was based on the life of St Paul.  In PE, we showed off our cricket skills by taking part in a mini tournament. Our new Science topic is Sound.  In order to investigate what makes sound, we carried out different activities – why not ask us what we did to see what we remember! In our French lesson, we drew an abstract face, Picasso style, then described it in French. We did very well!

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Wednesday (26th May 2021).

Some of you have asked if you can practise your times tables on the ‘Multiplication check’ program we used this week.  Unfortunately, you cannot use exactly the same program at home.  You can however play something very similar by clicking on the link below.  You will be given 6 seconds to answer the question and there will be a gap of 3 seconds between each question.

Multiplication tables check

Spellings

The spellings this week all have the suffix ‘tion’.  A suffix is a group of letters that are added to the end of the word, and which change the meaning or make a new word.  ‘Tion’ is usually used if the root word ends in ‘t’ (eg invent, invention) or ‘te’ (create, creation).  These words will be tested on Thursday (27th May 2021).  We have discussed different strategies to learn spellings in class, or you can always use ‘Look say cover write check’.  The spellings are on Sumdog this week.

action          fraction       creation       election       evaluation

subtraction  invention      injection      illustration   demonstration

completion   hesitation    narration     section        digestion

Sumdog Challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A spelling challenge based on the spellings above
  • A maths challenge based on mental addition and subtraction
  • A maths times table challenge (based on the 9 and 11 times table)

Please make sure you log on and have a go!

Year 6 Home Practice - Friday 21st May 2021

Date: 21st May 2021 @ 3:55pm

This week Year 6 had their ‘bike checks’ before our ‘Bike Proficiency’ and ‘Bikeability’ training which is happening throughout next week. We worked through the Safer Cycling booklet and discussed different scenarios to keep ourselves safe when riding on the road.

Reminders:

  • Do not forget to bring in your bike and helmet every day next week (Monday 24th May – Friday 28th May)

Our learning in Year 6 this week:

  • In PSHE, we worked on strategies to deal with worry and anxiety, especially when dealing with tests.
  • In Maths, we have worked through a few reasoning questions and improved our test technique of how to solve them.
  • In English, we have continued the story of The Lost Magician, with the four main characters heading off in separate ways to conquer their own quests. We then analysed the evil robot character, Jana, and wrote an excellent speech to the Army of the Unreads.
  • In PE, we learnt more about the rules of Quick Cricket and Tag Rugby for future intra-competitions.
  • In RE, we have begun our new topic, Healing, where we discussed the important work that carers do in children’s hospices and qualities needed to work in a hospice.
  • In Music, we have learnt more songs for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory production, ‘Oompa Loompa’.
  • In French, we learnt what various countries in Europe are famous for and wrote sentences in French to describe them. We looked at the national symbols of France and compared them with the UK eg Britannia v Marianne, our lion v the French cockerel.
  • For Science, having learnt about medicines last week, we moved on to learn about the effects and risks involved in taking legal (eg caffeine) and illegal drugs. We stressed the importance of talking to a trusted adult about any questions or worries the children have.
  • Finally in History, each group presented their posters or powerpoints about the evacuees of World War II.

Well done to everyone who is changing their book every week. Reading is the single most important thing we should do every day.

These are the days when you can change your reading book:

Monday – Dodgems

Tuesday – Roller Coasters

Wednesday – Big Dippers / The Waltzers

These are the tasks to be completed:

  • Reading – Please keep reading for a minimum of 30 minutes every day.

Please complete the ‘Reading Challenges’ you have been given by answering them in your Reading Journals.

  • Sumdog challenges:

  • Times tables x8, x9, x11 (100 correct answers needed):
    • Keep learning these to know your times tables fluently.

  • Adding, subtracting and finding common fractions (150 correct answers needed for this week):
    • Work through these carefully as some will be represented as various pictures. The adding and subtracting should be with the same denominator but it is very good practice for next week.

  • Spellings (45 correct answers needed):
    • Spellings with –er, -or, -ar ending

(computer, superior, customer, soldier, shoulder, sailor, calendar, popular, particular, radiator, jeweller, professor, prisoner, inspector, accelerator)

Year 2 Home Practice - 21st May 2021

Date: 21st May 2021 @ 3:36pm

We have had a great week in Year 2. This week in English we continued our story, Georges Marvellous Medicine. We wrote some instructions for making our own marvellous concoction and we used alliteration and similes in our writing. We managed to get up to the chapter 7 - Grandma gets the medicine. The children are having a great time reading the story. In Maths, we have consolidated previous learning and we have tackled some tricky addition and subtraction questions. We answered these questions by drawing base 10 and exchanging. In French this week, we continued to practise the vocabulary for clothes with games, songs and stories. We tried to record our own version of a story with clothes in it! We are approaching the end of our striking and fielding unit in PE and we have really enjoyed practising our over arm throw and striking skills. We really enjoyed playing our strike out game on the field. In Re we have looked at what it takes to be one of God’s Saints. We generated some really thoughtful discussions as a class. A brilliant week Year 2, well done!

Well done to the 21 children who have had a go at the SumDog challenges this week. Those children will receive dojos for going on and completing the work set. There will be a prize for the child with the most individual dojo points this week.

Reading

In Year 2 we aim to read for a minimum of 15 minutes every night and discuss the book with an older sibling or adult to help deepen your knowledge.

Reading books are changed every Monday so please remember to bring in your book bag.

Friday 21st May 2021

Date: 21st May 2021 @ 12:57pm

This week we have been doing the story of the Hungry Caterpillar. We have written a diary about what he ate and made our own fruit kebabs, which we enjoyed for our snack.

In art, we made our own caterpillars with repeating patterns and had a look at making symmetrical butterflies by painting one side and folding it in half.

We have also been looking at sharing different amounts, playing bingo and making our own butterfly lifecycles.

We started our new topic in RE, which is all about friends. We have spoken about what makes a good friend, made friendship cards and friendship bracelets.

Such a busy week! well done everyone!

Year 3 Home Practice 21st May 2021

Date: 21st May 2021 @ 12:55pm

We have had a very fun week in Year 3. We made beautiful pieces of ocean art after learning about the ocean and about how different creatures adapt to living in the deep sea. We also looked at the different oceans and seas in an atlas in Geography. We then squeezed in another Geography lesson; we couldn’t miss out on the Eurovision Song Contest. We had a lot of fun and laughter listening to the songs by some of the contestants, we rocked some of the dance moves (especially Iceland’s dance) and then we found out about the different countries by looking at maps.

In French we continued to practise reading and writing numbers and days and fruit vocabulary, ready to read The Hungry Caterpillar in French next week.

In Maths we have been focussing on multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number, we are getting very good at this. Knowing our times tables well helps a lot!

In English we have been focussing on splitting our writing into paragraphs and using good words to make our writing exciting.

Year 5 Home Practice Friday 21st May 2021

A Feast for All Time - Our Lady of the Rosary - My Catholic Kids

A great week Year 5, made even better with some lovely sunny days. In English, we have written letters about homesickness. Something that Boy (Roald Dahl) experienced at boarding school. The children used the text to say why he was homesick and how he could make it better. We have moved on to addition and subtraction in Maths, using near multiples of 10, 100 and 1000 to add and subtract mentally and did some tricky problem solving. In RE, we made a collage of all the things we learned about the Holy Spirit and transformation. There were some very creative/artistic pieces of work, well done Year 5.

Reading

Please read for at least twenty/thirty minutes every evening. Talk about what you have read with an adult. Discuss the story, characters and any new vocabulary you come across. If it is a non-fiction book, look at the contents page, glossary or index and see how it helps you find more information.

Y5 book changing day is Friday. Although, some children may change books at different times, so always bring your book bag into school every day. Remember to sign when you have finished a book, it makes it much easier to issue new books.

Remember to complete your ‘Reading Journal’ task. At the front of the journal there are activities for you to do using your current book or one you have just finished. Choose an activity, complete it in your journal (best presentation and handwriting!) and colour/highlight the square to show you have done it. Complete one activity per week.

Maths

This week’s challenge on Sumdog is based on addition and subtraction problems/ division facts. We will have a division facts test on Friday.

Spelling

There will be no Sumdog spelling challenge this week, so please spend extra time learning the spellings below.

Please learn these spellings for Friday (28.5.21): If you don’t know what a word means, look it up in a dictionary or ask an adult.

Year 2 Home Practice - 14th May 2021

Date: 14th May 2021 @ 3:54pm

Well done for all your hard work this week Year 2!

This week in English, we started our new story, Georges Marvellous Medicine. We have looked at George’s grizzly old grunion of a Grandma and we created some great character descriptions. We have also looked at poetry and rhyme. We attempted to create our own medicine poem. In Maths, we have looked at place value and placing numbers on different number lines. Our bean plants and cress are looking great and we have kept up with our diaries, carefully monitoring how they grow. In French this week, we started by trying to use our French phonics to spell numbers. We are getting better! Then we read the story Je m’habille et je te croque about a wolf who puts his clothes on before eating someone. We tried to learn the words for clothes by playing some games. During Mental Health Week we have made it a priority to get outside in the fresh air. We even managed to take part in some relaxing meditation sessions. This helped to focus our minds and let go of any worries we had.

Well done to the 22 children who have had a go at the SumDog challenges this week. Those children will receive dojos for going on and completing the work set. There will be a prize for the child with the most individual dojo points this week.
