Years 1 and 2- Forest School-Spinning Jenny Dragonflies

Lesson: Learning Outside the Classroom

Class: Year 1 Year: 2023 - 2024

We found out that in the UK, four different trees produce spinning jennies, also known as helicopter seeds: field maple, ash, sycamore and Norway maple. We found different spinning jennies in our school grounds. We discussed how the 'wings' help the seeds to disperse. There was great concentration shown when making our dragonflies using pipe cleaners and beads. The spinning jennies are very delicate and we needed very gentle hands! Other creations were produced as well, such as worry dolls, people, bracelets and necklaces.
