Year 6 Blog Friday 14th October 2022

Date: 14th Oct 2022 @ 1:43pm

Welcome to Year 6 weekly blog.

This week, Year 6 had a super time on their taster day at All Hallows’ school. They enjoyed burning crisps in Science, playing a handball tournament in PE and designing a moving robot in Computing. Please view our pictures in the Year 6 gallery.

Also, the football league continued at Hutton this week. The A team played really well with a great win and draw, which has set them up for a tense last week as we head towards the play offs. As for the B team, they are working incredibly well together and managed to win one and lose one. Please do not forget that the last week of football is at Hutton, Wednesday 19th October at 3.45pm – 5pm.

Results for A team:

St Oswald’s A 1 – 1 Howick A

St Oswald’s A 4 – 1 Whitefield B

Results for B Team:

St Oswald’s B 4 – 2 Cop Lane B

St Oswald’s B 0 – 2 Middleforth

This week’s learning in Year 6:

  • In Maths, we have continued investigating different strategies for addition and subtraction using ‘compensation’ and ‘finding the difference’ to then decide on which strategy is the appropriate for different questions.
  • In English, an evil character (Dr Kalmenius) has dramatically entered our novel, ‘Clockwork’. We then described this character and attempted different ways of entering him into a story. We then created a play script to practise our spoken language skills in front of the class.
  • In RE, we started our new topic of ‘Vocation and Commitment’ by discussing the jobs that require these values. We then created questions for a firefighter that we will be interviewing next week.
  • Our ‘Mountains’ topic in geography continued with a look into how mountains were formed and are still forming. We learnt that the tectonic plates that surround the Earth have moved to create various mountains over millions of years.
  • In PE, we focused on developing the children’s evaluation skills. We discussed what to look out for (e.g. various tactics to outwit an opponent) and whether these were successful. If they were not, we changed them and tried again.
  • In Music, we practised with recorders this week as we prepared for our ‘Music Showcase’, which is at 2.45pm in the hall, Monday 17th October 2022.
  • In French, we recapped the months of the year and learnt the vocabulary for the four seasons.
  • In Science, we created an interview with Carl Linnaeus, the ‘father’ of classification, and we sorted the characteristics of different classes of vertebrates and invertebrates.

Home Practice

Please try to complete the following tasks by next Wednesday:

Reading – Use your Home Reading to read every night for up to 30 minutes. You also have a Reading Journal/Diary that must be used for the title of the book and any reading challenge chosen.

  • You may change your book any day between Monday and Wednesday

Spellings (Spellings of Autumn 1)

  • Sumdog (Autumn 1 mixed spellings wk 6)
    • discussed, usually, happiness, unavailable, changeable, comfortably, dependable, horrible, impossible, incredible, possible, difference, preferred, reference, transfer

Maths challenges:

  • Counting:
    • This week we have been counting in decimal steps of 8, 80 and 800 Try to do the same out loud or with paper.
    • Draw a line with some marks on it like I do in class. You could write the numbers as you count up or down, then double check it to make sure you have said the correct numbers.
    • g. Start with different numbers and count up 10 times then back again in 8s:

5, 13, 21, 29, 37, 45, 53, 61, etc

and in 80s:

13, 93, 173, 253, 333, 413, etc

Start at a different number and count up 10 numbers and down again but this time in 800s:

456, 1256, 2056, 2856, 3656, 4456 etc

  • Sumdog (Times Tables wk 6)
    • Each child has their own tables target which they should know. The Sumdog challenge may relate to their target but this week we have focused on a mixture of x4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9s.
    • (Every Tuesday there is a tables test).

  • Sumdog (Estimating addition / subtraction)
    • These questions will focus on rounding, which we have done these past few weeks. The questions will eventually seem quite simple once you realise that you do not need the exact answer, just the estimate. This practice will help with next week’s learning.

Maths Training

For further maths work, please visit the ‘Maths Training’ section which you can find in the tasks box on the left of the main screen. This will enable your child to push their learning further with the skills that Sumdog has given them, following the diagnostic test, which they completed in the first week of school.

Percy the Park Keeper Wheelbarrow Card | Paper Tiger

English

This week we have been learning through the story of Percy the Park Keeper. He had a big job to do when all the animals lost their homes after the storm.

We designed parks, wrote about what jobs we'd like to do when we grow up and imagined what we'd be able to see, smell, touch and feel during a storm. We are getting really good at sharing our learning and talking about it.

Phonics

We have been learning ph as in phew, wh as in whistle and ew as in stew.

Outdoor Learning

This week we have been building obstacle courses. Our ideas were really imaginative and our team work was superb. We had to test our course to make sure it was safe and we demonstrated our couse to everyone-then we all had a go! There was balancing, jumping, and even some limbo! Some of the courses even had a name!

Our other session was about making a stick person. We talked about finding forked sticks and we went into our nature area to see what we could find. We used elastic bands, string and pipe cleaners to attach the sticks together. Some of us leart a technique called lashing to securely fasten the sticks.

Year 5 Blog Friday 14th October

Date: 12th Oct 2022 @ 9:34am

Happy Friday everybody.

It was lovely to see everybody for parent's evening this week. The children felt so proud to show off their work, they really have been working very hard.

So Proud Of You Yellow Star Badge : Kool Badges

We have had a lovely week in Year 5. We painted our Jo Quigley style cityscapes on Monday and have displayed them proudly in our classroom. You can see us working on our masterpieces in our gallery here.

We have started our new topic in RE. It is called Life Choices. So far we have thought about how to maintain friendships and what our mission is in life. Everybody produced some beautiful work.

In PSHE we spoke about stereotypes. We found it interesting to talk about gender stereotypes and came up with sentences to break those stereotypes. Here are some examples we came up with:

Boys and girls can play football.

Boys and girls can be vets.

Boys and girls can be good at English.

In English we have finished reading our novel Goth Girl. We absolutely loved it and produced excellent work from it. We ended our learning about Goth Girl by writing an epilogue. We chose some of our favourite characters and wrote about what they would be doing in the future. There were lots of fantastic ideas. We will be starting our new novel on Monday...

I love reading | Blue Shelf Bookstore

We have been practising different strategies in maths for adding and subtracting. We have been focussing on using mental methods and some jottings like number lines. It is really important that we know our number bonds to 100 as we progress with our learning. For example:

51 + 49 = 100

100 = 33 + 67

100 - 22 = 78

69 = 100 - 31

Also, the football league continued at Hutton this week. The A team played really well with a great win and draw, which has set them up for a tense last week as we head towards the play offs. As for the B team, they are working incredibly well as a team and managed to win one and lose one. Please do not forget that the last week of football is at Hutton, Wednesday 19th October at 3.45pm – 5pm.

Prophecy: It's Harvest Time - JOY! News

Year 2 have been great this week, full of enthusiasm and joy for learning. They really are becoming super learners! In English, we have moved on to non-fiction writing. We are looking at information texts and letters. The children wrote sentences that were made-up (fiction) and fact (non-fiction). They are trying hard to always sit their letters on the line and do neat handwriting with lead-ins. We will be writing our own letters and information texts about pets. In Maths, the children have been measuring length and weight (mass). They learnt about metres and centimetres, measuring objects/lines with rulers, some of them even got the trundle wheels out to measure the playground. Everyone enjoyed using the balance scales to measure objects around the classroom. In Art, we used collage to create Pablo Picasso style portraits. In Geography the children located the seven continents on a map and learned facts about each one. We love to sing the continents song! We looked at microhabitats during our Science lesson. Outdoor learning has been very popular. Year 2 will be doing this every week so please could your child always have a coat and a pair of wellies that can be kept in school.

Reading

In Year 2, children should read for at least 15 minutes every night and talk about the book. This will help with understanding the text and learning new words.

You could find the meaning of new words by looking them up in a dictionary. A great skill for your child to learn. We will be doing this in class soon.

Please date, sign and leave a small comment when you have read with your child and make it clear that you have finished a book, then we know we can change it. For Example - 14.09.22 Max’s Box. Read to page 6, really enjoying the book or good sounding out of tricky words or struggled with the word – because/finished the book. MG.

Reading books are changed every Wednesday. You will receive 2-4 books depending on their length, they should last the week, if you read a little each night. However, if you need to change a book at any other time, we will change it as needed.

Reading resources:

Oxford Owl – This resource has an exciting range of carefully levelled books to help children learn to read and really enjoy it.

If parents and children decide to use this resource, we ask they access phase 5 books. Go to https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ and select ‘my class login’. Scroll down to the ‘eBook Library for Letters & Sounds’. You could also explore the rest of the site and read books from the Oxford Owl eBook library or listen to audio books.

In addition to this, reading a good bed time story to your child is so worthwhile and really helps towards a lifelong love of reading.

Spelling

Please practise these spellings for your quiz on Friday (14.10.22). A sheet will go home every Friday with the spelling list on. This is for home practise only and can be kept with you.

It will really help your children’s writing if they can spell the common words they use frequently in class. Attached are the Year 1 and 2 common exception words. Knowing sounds (phonics) will not help with these words, they just need to know them by memory/sight. Learning five or six of these words at a time will really help. Write them down and pin them up on the fridge or wall. We work on these in class as well and the children are tested (quiz) on them before Christmas.

You will have a Sumdog challenge on these words to complete by next Friday 14.10.22.

This week’s spellings:

ride                flute

white              cube

stone              cute

home               again

rule                 thought

Maths

At home, count to 100 forwards and backwards. Ask questions like, what is one/two/five or ten more/less than_? The blank _ could be any number up to 50 or 100. This will help with next week’s learning on addition and subtraction.

You will have a 5x and 10x tables, and another measure challenge on Sumdog to complete by next Friday 14.10.22.

It's our Harvest celebration next week and we would appreciate some tins or packets of food for our collection, which will be donated to the Penwortham foodbank.

Welcome to your Friday Blog

Happy World Smile Day!

Smiling GIFs | Tenor

We have had a great week in Year 3! Everyone has been woring hard on their listening skills and their independent learning. We have had some outdoor learning in between the showers and been practising our dodgeball skills with Mrs Cookson.

In our English we have been reading The Diary of a Killer Cat. The children have enjoyed hearing about Tuffy's antcis and what he thinks about everything. We have had some great writing about the story. We wrote letters to an animal shelter to take Tuffy off our hand and we learned about speech sentences and speech marks.

Intervention mapping from PiRA for Scotland Summer ...

In Maths we have been learning about bar graphs and pictograms. The children have been very good at showing their information on bar graphs and using them to answer questions. A huge well dont everyone who entered the Sumdog Lacashire competition. Our class finished 4th in Lancashire with a score of 251! Amazing effort Year 3!

Trophies GIFs - Get the best gif on GIFER

In our Art learning this week we have been exploring texture in our outdoor area. Have a look at some of our work here.

On Thursday we celebrated National Poetry Day. As we are learning about friendship in our PSHE learning. We read lots of friendship poems and used our learning so far to write our own poems. We then performed them to eachother in our outdoor theatre. Have a look here.

This week we have been learning about how computers are connected. We learned about servers, network switches and wireless access points. Once we had looked at how networks pass information around we had a go ourselves and shared messages and sound files through Seesaw. We thought about where the messages went before they came onto our iPads. Super learning Year 3!

Home Practice

This week we have noticed most children in the class could improve their recall speed of number facts to 10 and 20. We have been using the number bonds to 10 to solve trickier problems and to be fluent, the children have to be quick and accurate. We have sent home a sheet to practise these number facts. Have a go.

Hit the button is a great game for practising number facts and times tables. Click the picture below to access the game.

We have also set a number fact Sumdog challenge and a statistics challenge to help embed the learning from this week.

This week in our spelling we have been focussing on how we can use our phonics knowledge to help spell words. The children have been revisiting their vowel sounds and looking carefully to make sure all our letters are in the right places. Here are your words for this week.

light    might    flight     cried    spied     dried     chime     spike     stride    compile

Welcome to Year 6 weekly blog.

This week, Year 6 attended church to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Thank you to Father Michael for inviting us.

Also, the football league began with pupils from Year 5 and 6 competing against schools from the local area. Both teams represented the school brilliantly, with superb hat-tricks from Finley (Year 6) and Morgan (Year 5). Everyone worked really well as a team – we are looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in the next two weeks.

St Oswald’s B 1 – 2 Howick B

This week’s learning in Year 6:

  • In Maths, we have learnt how to use the partitioning and bridging strategies for both addition and subtraction. Next week, we will learn a few more before deciding which strategies are most appropriate for different questions.
  • In English, we began our new novel, ‘Clockwork’ and have improved the reading skills of retrieval and inference to help find evidence that explains the impressions we have on the two main characters.
  • In Art, we used Lola Dupre’s artwork to inspire us further with the mediums of sketch pencils and charcoal. We focused on the skill of shading.
  • In RE, the school ambassadors led a lovely collective worship to complete our topic on ‘Unconditional Love’, before learning how people choose jobs that become a vocation and are extremely committed to.
  • Our ‘Mountains’ topic in geography continued with a closer look on what features are in a mountain range. We worked as groups to gather the information before making a presentation to the class.
  • In PE, the children learnt how to improve their running skills by evaluating their arm and leg movements. They also developed their swing pass, dodging and tackling through the sport of rugby.
  • In PSHE, we learnt that any situation can have hopes and challenges. We discussed a scenario of moving to high school and the hopes and challenges we might face. We then wrote to ourselves to give advice for how we might overcome some of these challenges.
  • In French, we recapped the months of the year and question words - Qui? Quand? Ou? Comment? Qu'est-ce que...? etc We translated some sentences from French to English, understanding that we had to translate the sense, not the exact words. We also chose the first pair of Language Leaders who will be helping everyone to answer questions in French about themselves.
  • In Science, we learnt about the work of Carl Linnaeus, known as the father of Classification. We discussed how science is constantly evolving as we develop new technology and understanding so some of his ideas are no longer valid.  Then we researched some animals to find their classification and scientific names. Finally, we looked for evidence to answer the question: Are humans primates?

Year 4 Blog

Friday 7th October 2022

Year 4 have had a fabulous week and have shown an excellent attitude to their learning.  You are all superstars!

Here’s what we have been learning:

In English, we wrote sentences using co-ordinating conjunctions to make them more interesting. We also wrote a diary account from Kensuke’s point of view and listed words to describe Michael’s thoughts and feelings. During the week, we have also been practising our spellings in preparation for our weekly test – have a look at our gallery to see us playing Spelling Countdown!

In Maths, we measured lengths in centimetres and millimetres, including cm as decimals with 1 decimal place.  In addition, we measured and calculated the perimeter of rectilinear shapes where all the side lengths are given.

In RE, we finished our ‘Families’ topic.  Four children gave a lovely ‘Respond’ to remind the class of their learning – this was beautifully presented and very respectful. Please see the pictures in our gallery.

In Science, we created our own classification keys using a computer program called Flexitree.

In French, we practised reading words with the vowel sounds in then we looked at classroom instructions such as asseyez-vous, ecrivez, dessinez and looked at the sound ‘ay’ spelt ‘ez’.  We also chose the first pair of Language Leaders who will be helping everyone to answer questions in French about themselves.

In PE, we warmed up with a train run.  We are definitely getting better at baton changes and building our stamina with these relay races. In addition, we played dodgeball in preparation for a tournament in a couple of weeks time. You can see some pictures of our PE lesson in the gallery.

In Art, we found out what Roman mosaics were made of. We looked at lots of examples and discussed what made them effective, which ones appealed to us and what especially stood out to us.  Following this, we selected different examples and stuck them in our Art Jotters – we also explained what we liked about them. We will use these to help us design our own mosaic in the coming weeks. Have a look at us exploring mosaics in the gallery.

In PSHE, as part of World Smile Day, we discussed what makes us happy and brings a smile to our faces.  In addition, we thought of acts of kindness we could do to bring a smile to the faces of others.

Reception Friday 7th October 2022

Date: 7th Oct 2022 @ 12:18pm

This week we have been doing the story of Elmer. We have retold the story, made our own Elmer puppets and have been talking about what Elmer said. We loved looking at his patchwork colours.

In Maths we have been looking at the numbers 3,4 and 5. we have counted and drawn pictures to respresent the numbers.

Mrs Stone came in to visit us with her baby, which was lovely. All of the children sat so beautifully and quiet and even sang 'twinkl twinkl little star to her!' We have been learning about growing from a baby to a grown up the last few weeks, so seeing how it starts was great!

In PE we did climbing, balancing and moving in different ways.

With Mrs Winter in Music, we all had a go playing the claves and in French we learnt a new song with the numbers 1 to 10, then we did our colour words with a song, game and a story. Tres bon effort, tous! Well done everyone!

Year 4 Blog - Friday 30th September 2022

Date: 30th Sep 2022 @ 3:56pm

Year 4 Blog

Friday 30th September 2022

Year 4 have worked hard this week with many children getting on triple and quadruple gold! What a super achievement!

Here’s what we have been learning:

In English, we used our senses to complete a piece of writing which contained descriptive and expressive language. We found this tricky as we were explaining what we could see, hear, smell etc, without using the words I could see…. I could hear… I could smell…. etc. However, we were extremely proud with our finished pieces of writing and some of the descriptive language we used. We also wrote some super poems called What’s the difference between … eg dogs and deckchairs? There were some great ideas and some were very amusing!

In Maths, we continued using numberlines to add and subtract numbers.   We also practised measuring and drawing lengths as properties of 2D shapes. In addition, we put our measuring skills into practise as we collected leaves and then tried to accurately measure them in cm and mm!

In RE, we listened to the story of Ruth and then hot-seated her. We also learnt about the wisdom of Solomon and how the Book of Proverbs in the Bible is attributed to him.

In History, we learnt where the Romans came from, when Rome was founded, how the Roman Empire grew, and listened to the story of Romulus and Remus.

In Science, we learnt how to use a classification key to identify living things.  We then played Guess Who to practise asking yes / no questions ready to create our own classification key next week.

In French, we had a taste of Polish and German as well as French this week. We talked about similarities and differences between the sound of the languages and how the skills acquired when learning one language can really help learn another.

Many thanks to everyone who came to the ‘Open Morning’ on Tuesday - we hope you enjoyed seeing the school in action.

We would also like to thank Mrs Nowak and Mr Hawryluk who read stories in Polish to us on European Languages Day.

Home Practice

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Counting

This week, please practise counting in 1000’s

For example, start at 0 and count up to 12 000 and back again

0   1000    2000   etc                      12 000   11 000    10 000   etc

For example, start at 452 and down up to 10 452 and back again

452   1452   2452  etc                    10 452    9452    8452  etc

Times tables

Please practise your individual tables target for your test next week on Thursday (6th October 2022).  Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

Remember you can also practise your tables playing Hit the Button and timestables.co.uk

It is crucial that you learn all of your table facts as this will help you with many aspects of maths.

Measuring

If you can, please draw some lines on a piece of paper and practise measuring them with a ruler like we have done in class.  You may also want to use your ruler to measure things around your home, for example, a book, an envelope, a CD cover.  You could even go outside and collect leaves or other items to measure like you did in school. Think carefully about the measurements in cm and mm and try and be as accurate as you can.

Spellings

Your spellings next week are all from the Year 3 / 4 Statutory Spelling list.  You have also brought a paper copy home with you, so that you can practise these during the week.  Please remember to use neat joined up writing and check them very carefully once you have written them! We will be practising these spellings in class too. Your test will be on Friday 7th October 2022.

Reception Blog Friday 30th September

Date: 30th Sep 2022 @ 3:42pm

We have had a fantastic week in Reception!

For Literacy this week we have done the book My Family. We have drawn who lives with us and we have hunted for our name and practiced writing it. We also made faces using different materials.

We had Music with Mrs Winter singing the song 'Crunching through the leaves.' In French with Mrs Quilliam we began to learn colours as well as recapping all the language we have learnt so far. Mrs Quilliam loves that all the children say ‘Bonjour’ when they see her around school – well done everyone! A big thank you to Mrs Nowak who came in to read a story in Polish for European Day of Languages Dzi?kuj?!

We have also done lots of smelling this week, as we've been focussing on the sense of smell. The garlic was very strong, but we recognised the ginger as gingerbread men!

On Friday afternoon we did lots of learning about the primary colours. We also experimented about what happens when you mix them up! we used paint and food colouring.

Have a look at the pictures to see all the fun we have had this week!

If you can, please send a pair of wellies in next week with your child (labelled) as the weather has changed we will need them for going outdoors.

Have a lovely weekend everyone and we will see you on Monday!

Year 6 Blog Friday 30th September 2022

Date: 30th Sep 2022 @ 3:42pm

Welcome to Year 6 weekly blog.

This week we have focused on our speaking and listening skills when having class discussions or working in groups. We also focused on presenting our work to be made as neatly as possible, with regular handwriting sessions to help.

The Reading Ambassadors have started their leadership role of reading with the infants. They made a great impression on the infant staff and are looking forward to more reading time in the coming weeks.

This week’s learning in Year 6:

  • In Maths, we have learnt how to use bar modelling to add fractions and how improper fractions relate to mixed numbers. We then used our knowledge of place value to add and subtract different powers of 10 from any whole number or decimal number.
  • In English, we finished the Aladdin story and looked in detail how to introduce an evil character with either description (focusing on adjectives) or action (focusing on our verbs).
  • In Art, we investigated a new artist, Lola Dupre, to improve our developing skills of sketching.
  • Our ‘Mountains’ topic in geography lead us to research famous mountains in groups. From the information, we presented our facts to the class and challenged other groups to see what they could remember.
  • In PE, we divided into different track and field events to focus on our individual skills to improve our previous scores on jumping, running and throwing.
  • In PSHE, we learnt that there are many strategies to help keep our mental health healthy. We used the scenarios of last week to give our advice.
  • As it has been European Day of Languages, the children have had a taste of Polish and German as well as French this week. We have talked about similarities and differences between the sound of the languages and how the skills acquired when learning one language can really help learn another. Many thanks to Mr Hawryluk who came into school to offer this opportunity to the children. Dzi?kuj?!
  • In Science, the children were research biologists this week, finding out about non-flowering plants such as conifers, ferns and moss and how they reproduce without flowers or even seeds. They presented their findings in the form of posters – a super science skill with which to communicate. Well done, Year 6.

Home Practice

Maths challenges:

  • Counting:
    • This week we have been counting in fraction steps of ¼ and 2/4 Try to do the same out loud or with paper.
    • Draw a line and some marks on it like I do in class. You could write the numbers as you count up or down, then double check it to make sure you have said the correct numbers.
    • g. Start with different numbers and count up 10 numbers then back again in halves:

2 ¼ , 2 2/4, 2 ¾, 3, 3 ¼ , etc

and as improper fractions:

¾, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, 8/4, etc

    • (Every Tuesday there is a tables test).

  • Sumdog Competition VS All Hallows’ Year 7
    • This week we have prepared to go head-to-head against All Hallows’ Year 7s in a Sumdog competition. Simply click on the competition to get started and try to complete as many as you can (you do not have to do more than 100 questions if you are busy). The more people that play, the better the chance we have at beating All Hallows’!
    • Each day we will reveal the leaderboard and All Hallows’ have announced that certificates will be provided by them for the top winners. Good luck!

Maths Training

For further maths work, please visit the ‘Maths Training’ section which you can find in the tasks box on the left of the main screen. This will enable your child to push their learning further with the skills that Sumdog has given them, following the diagnostic test, which they completed in the first week of school.

Year 3 Blog Friday 30th September 2022

Date: 30th Sep 2022 @ 2:56pm

Welcome to your Friday Blog

We have had an amazing week of learning in Year 3. Everyone is showing a brilliant attitude to everything we do and we are very impressed!

We have finished reading The Twits now and can’t wait to start reading The Diary of a Killer Cat by Anne Fine next week. We loved writing about The Twits and have been improving our writing by looking carefully at our spelling and presentation and by writing in paragraphs.

Everyone is trying their best to improve their writing. Amazing effort everyone!

Roald Dahl Museum on Twitter: ""Mr Twit was a twit. He was born a twit. And now at the age of sixty, he was a bigger twit than ever." - The Twits

In our maths learning we have been learning to measure cm and mm and and calculating the perimeter of 2D shapes. Your Sumdog challenge this week is based on this learning. We have also been practising our adding, subtraction and difference on number lines. Everyone is improving their understanding with this method. Spot some super working out here.

In our computing learning we explored computer networks and different connections. We also looked at sending information and the importance of a network switch. Have a look at our gallery here.

In our PSHE, we had a great discussion on what we should do when our friendships aren't working out. We had some great ideas and everyone listened respectfully.

In history we stepped into the past and told the story of a day in the Stone Age. We told this in both super sentences and with a cave painting. Everyone  was excited to go hunting for their dinner!

Home Practice

This week we have sent home two sheets to practice number facts to 10 and 20. This is an optional task but fluency in these (speed and accuracy) will help with all future number learning in Year 3.

Your Sumdog maths challenge has a perimeter and space focus. 50 questions! Do your best!

We have also entered the class into the Lancashire maths contest. These questions will be based on what skills your child needs to build fluency in.

Continue to read every night. The children are getting much better at remembering to change their books. Well done Year 3!

All the spellings this week have the -al pattern. Have a go at some of the other practice ideas on the card.

Premium Vector | Cute baby boy cartoon

Another great week in Year 2, a huge well done to everyone for working so hard and always trying their best. During English, we learnt about the past tense and joining words. The children wrote a diary about visiting Animal Town. We had some very imaginative experiences with the animals. In Maths, we have moved on to measure, focusing on length (metres and centimetres). There posters in PSHE were great and informed us on how to be a good friend. The children gave Mrs Sheen a lovely send off during our Golden Assembly. The card they made was fantastic and we all wished Mrs Sheen the best for the arrival of her baby boy. The children are looking forward to meeting the baby when it’s born and old enough to visit us in school. On Monday, Mrs Singleton will be joining us and we are going to do our best to help her settle into our class.

Reading

In Year 2, children should read for at least 15 minutes every night and talk about the book. This will help with understanding the text and learning new words.

You could write down these new words in a word book and find out what they mean. It is amazing to see the list grow, something to be very proud of, especially when children realise how many more words they understand and can use!

Spelling

Please practise these spellings for your quiz on Friday (07.10.22). A sheet will go home every Friday with the spelling list on. This is for home practise only and can be kept with you.

It is useful to write the words down on the spelling sheet, but also to call the words out and spell them out loud using the letter sounds or names. Learn them in a different order, not just how they appear on the list below.

You will have a Sumdog challenge on these words to complete by next Friday 07.10.22.

This week’s spellings:

goes               came

toe                 swede

launch             theme

author             where

made                who

Maths

At home, count forwards and backwards in fives, starting from 5 or 50. Write them down as you say them and see what patterns you can spot. Are they odd or even numbers? For a challenge count past 50, see how far you can go!

You will have a 5x tables, and a measure challenge on Sumdog to complete by next Friday 07.10.22.

Year 5 Blog Friday 30th September

Date: 29th Sep 2022 @ 7:37pm

Welcome to your Friday Blog.

Happy Friday Wishes, Messages and Greetings - WishesMsg

It has been another fun-filled and exciting week in Year 5.

In maths we have been focussing on rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and 10000. We found it tricky but used number lines and had lots of practice to get better and better.

Click to practise rounding to the nearest 10 and 100.

Click here to practise rounding to the nearest 1000.

In English we have continued looking at dialogue (speech) and have been looking at different types of sentences we can use to describe characters. In our novel Goth Girl we have been excited to find out about all of the magical creatures at Ghastly Gorm Hall and are becoming extremely suspicious of the character Maltravers.

In geography we have been learning all about the UK. We looked at maps of the capital cities of the UK and described them by finding out what the different Ordnance Survey symbols represent. We were not surprised to find that London had lots of main roads and museums. Everybody worked so well with their partner.

You can see our great team work and great geography skills in our gallery here.

We started a new topic in computing. We learnt that a vector drawing is an image made on a computer by putting different lines and shapes together. We had a go at creating our own vector drawings on the iPads. Everybody showed such creativity and did a great job.

We were practising our lane swimming on Wednesday. This helps us to build our stamina and become more confident in the water. It was amazing to see everybody encouraging each other and feeling proud of each other getting for better and better.

We have been looking at descriptive writing this week. We visited the Twit's home and garden and wrote some fantastic descriptions. Everyone has been trying to improve their handwriting and presentation, remembering to write on the lines and form our letters correctly. It makes a huge difference when our writing looks beautiful!  Amazing effort everyone!

The Twits - The House, The Tree and the Monkey Cage

In our maths we have been learning to measure using a ruler and convert centimetres into metres and centmetres. We all picked this up really quicky. Super listening is the key! We also looked at drawing shapes using geoboards. We also revisited lots of vocabulary we'd met before.

Right angle, quadrilateral, 2D, centimetres, metres

In our computing, we explored the uses of digital devices and how they can make our lives easier. We explored if this was always the case and if non-digital devices were sometimes easier or more straightforward to use. We had some great ideas. We then tested this by using a whiteboard and and iPad to compare drawing with digital drawing. Have a look in our gallery here.

In our PSHE learning this week, we discussed friendship and how some qualites are more impotant than others. The children were very thoughtful and know exactly how to be a good friend.

In science we have started our Health and Nutrition topic. If possible, can you please send in some food packaging so we can compare the nutritional values of different foods. The children have been very curious about what goes into their food and how it helps them stay fit and healthy.

Home Practice

Keep changing your books regularly and read for at least 15-20 minutes every night!

Well done to everyone who completed their Sumdog challenges and even had some time to practise on the Sumdog Training. Three new challenges have been added today. Remember, little and often every night will benefit your children with their learning in school.

Try and do a little counting at home as well. This will promote number fluency and understanding. There are lots of counting games here at ictgames.com that we use in school. You will also find lots of counting songs on YouTube.

We have given out your spellings to practice for next week's test. We are looking at the -le and -el spelling pattern next week. In our spelling lessons this week we have been revisiting our spelling strategies. We have been breaking our words into syllables to help us spell more accurately and using what we already know to spell new words.

Here are your spellings for this week.

Reception - Friday 23rd September 2022

Date: 23rd Sep 2022 @ 4:06pm

We have all had another amazing week in Reception. We are all remembering our routines and showing great concentration doing our morning activities. (Which was a new addition for our routine this week)

We started learning Phonics this week. We have all learnt the sounds s, a, t and thought of our own words that begin with these sounds. Next week we will be learning the sounds p, i, n.

In French this week, we recapped the words and songs we have already learnt then we practised counting to 5 in French. We began to say how old we are. We also looked at how French people greet each other - lots of kissing!

In Science we went outside to look for signs of autumn and did lots of talking about what/where/when /why the leaves change colour, trees bear fruit and what the animals do as it begins to get colder. We had lots of good ideas and used our finding to make different pictures.

Thank you everyone for coming to our 'Meet the Teacher' last night. Enjoy retelling stories using the books and please still bring in your book bags everyday so we can read with the children too. We're giving you a little longer to complete the tasks, therefore the next time they will be changed is Monday 3rd October.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Year 6 Blog Friday 23rd September 2022

Date: 23rd Sep 2022 @ 3:48pm

Welcome to Year 6 weekly blog.

On Friday, we celebrated all the children that will be representing the school as a Digital Leader, Eco Team or part of the School Council. The leaders (in Year 6) are very excited to start working with them all. Next week, the Reading Ambassadors will begin their roles by helping the infants to read.

This week’s learning in Year 6:

  • We have been learning how to use our times tables as related facts to answer questions like 0.4 x 500 = ? We have also used number lines to show why numbers round up or down to 1, 10, 100, 1 000, 10 000, 100 000 or even a million.
  • In English we took another scene from Aladdin to construct our own dialogue and focused on the rules of speech marks within a story.
  • In Art and Computing, we learnt how to use digital media to create artwork of self-portraits. The finished results are amazing. Please check out the Year 6 gallery to see.
  • In PSHE, we continued our ‘mental health’ topic by looking at different scenarios that can happen over time and how that affects our feelings and emotions.
  • In Music, we have been learning how to use recorders with various songs.
  • In French, we recapped the French vowel sounds and actions. Then we played some games to practise reading words with the vowel sounds in. After that, we completed our piece of writing 'Tout sur moi' - All about me, checking that all the adjectives agreed with their nouns and all verb forms were correct. We are getting much more confident to pronounce our French writing correctly - C'est super!
  • In Science, we looked at the data we gathered last week about the trees in the school grounds and came to a conclusion about which trees were most common. Then we used all our new knowledge and vocabulary from the last couple of weeks about trees to make a Classification Key - a flow chart used by scientists to identify living things.

Year 4 Blog Friday 23rd September 2022

Date: 23rd Sep 2022 @ 3:36pm

Year 4 Blog

Friday 23rd September 2022

A very busy week in Year 4! Here’s what we have been learning:

In English, we continued reading our class novel ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’.  We described the moment that Michael fell into the sea and his thoughts and feelings at this time. We also tried to use ambitious vocabulary and a variety of co-ordinating conjunctions in our writing.

In Maths, we learnt how to accurately use a numberline to add and subtract numbers.  We also identified step sizes in sequences and then continued the sequence as accurately as we could.

In RE, we heard the story of Esau and Jacob, and discussed their differences -especially how Jacob managed to get God’s blessing!

In PE, we warmed up by running in teams in a 'relay race'. We also continued practising our ‘pass then move’ skills.  We then used these skills in small games of netball. See our pictures in the gallery.

In PSHE, we further explored self-esteem by identifying positive things about ourselves and explaining how they contribute to our self-esteem.

In Science, we discussed how to group or classify animals according to their characteristics. We especially revised our learning about the 5 vertebrate groups – mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. You can see our learning in the gallery.

In French, we recapped the French vowel sounds and actions. Then we played some games to practise reading words with the vowel sounds in.

Home Practice

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Counting

This week, please practise counting in 100’s – draw a line and some marks on it like I do in class. You could write the numbers down as you count up.  When you count down, cover the numbers up, say the number, then reveal what you have got written down to check you’ve said the correct number.

Count in 100’s

For example, start at 0 and count up to 1500 and back again

0   100   200   etc                      1500   1400   1300   etc

For example, start at 278 and down up to 1878 and back again

278    378    478           etc              1878   1778   1678   etc

Times tables

You should have been given your times table target this week. Please therefore practise this times table in preparation for your test next week, on Thursday (29th September 2022).  Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

Remember you can also practise your tables playing Hit the Button and timestables.co.uk

It is crucial that you learn all of your table facts as this will help you with many aspects of maths.

Spellings

Your spellings next week are all homophones.  You have also brought a paper copy home with you, so that you can practise these every night during the week.  Please remember to use neat joined up writing and check them very carefully once you have written them! We will be practising these spellings in class too. Your test will be on Friday 30th September 2022.

main             mane            piece           peace           fair             fare

plane            plain            there           their           they’re

here            hear            heel             heal

Sumdog challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A spelling challenge based on the spellings above
  • A maths challenge adding and subtracting numbers mentally
  • A times tables challenge based on the 5 and 10 times tables

Please make sure you log on and have a go!  Little and often is the key to success!

Please also have a look at our galleries which some of our learning this week.

Have a fabulous weekend

What Autumn Tells Us About Life and Work: There's a Time to Bring Something Good to an End | Sheridan Voysey

We have had a very busy week of learning in Year 2. A huge well done to everyone for listening so well and working so hard. In English, the children have worked on using joining words (conjunctions) to extend their sentences. They have written some great sentences using and, but, or, because, when, that and if. They have also written super stories based on our book, Flat Rabbit by Bardur Oskarsson. In Maths, they have been finding 1 or 10 more/less than a given number and comparing numbers. The children have thought about what God’s dream for them might be and decorated a star in RE. They made birthday cards and sang ‘Happy Birthday’ in French. Mrs Whitworth played her saxophone to the children during Music time and they thoroughly enjoyed it. The children learnt about habitats during our Science lesson and drew a picture of their favourite animal in it's habitat. They thought about why it was a good place for the animal to live.

Reading

In Year 2, children should read for at least 15 minutes every night and talk about the book. This will help with understanding the text and learning new words.

You could write down these new words in a word book and find out what they mean. It is amazing to see the list grow, something to be very proud of, especially when children realise how many more words they understand and can use!

Spelling

Please practise these spellings for your quiz on Friday (30.09.22). A sheet will go home every Friday with the spelling list on. This is for home practise only and can be kept with you.

It is useful to write the words down on the spelling sheet, but also to call the words out and spell them out loud using the letter sounds or names. Learn them in a different order, not just how they appear on the list below.

You will have a Sumdog challenge on these words to complete by next Friday 30.09.22.

This week’s spellings:

wheel               graph

whizz               flew

whirl                screw

when                their

phew                could

Maths

At home, count forwards and backwards in twos, starting from 2 or 40. Write them down as you say them and see what patterns you can spot. Are they odd or even numbers? For a challenge count past 40, see how far you can go!

You will have a 2x tables, and 1 or 10 more/less than challenge on Sumdog to complete by next Friday 30.09.22.

Year 5 Blog Friday 23rd September

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 8:19am

Welcome to your Friday Blog.

We have had a wonderful week in Year 5.

Despite having only 4 days, we have done lots of amazing work and we earned lots of Golden Tokens. This meant we had a lovely Golden Time on Friday afternoon.

We have been looking at dialogue (speech) in English. We have been learning the rules and have had a go at writing our own dialogue between two characters from the book. Everybody has done really well. Look out for speech in your reading books.

In maths we have been ordering and comparing numbers and placing them on a number line. We will continue with this next week and will be introduced to millions.

On Thursday we had our 'Wonderful World' assembly. We heard a story called 'One House For All.' It was a lovely story which celebrated everybody's differences. It spoke about different countries, languages and cultures.

One House For All – Book Island

We started a new topic in art. We are looking at an artist called Jo Quigley. In our art lesson we looked at lots of different pieces of art by Jo Quigley. We talked about what we could see and came up with questions about the art. We will be creating our own piece of art in the style of Jo Quigley.

Jo Quigley Parliament Sunset | Signed Cityscape London Art Print | Free UK Delivery – The Rose Gallery

In French, we recapped the French vowel sounds and actions. Then we played some games to practise reading words with the vowel sounds in. Then we learnt how to name the school subjects and used our new vocabulary in a sentence with our opinion eg J'adore le francais et les sciences mais ma matiere preferee, c'est le dessin.

Check out or PE gallery to see us practising some indoor athletics.
