Year 6 Friday Blog 9th October 2026
Date: 9th Oct 2026 @ 4:34pm
Welcome to the Year 6 weekly blog.
First of all, we had a brilliant day visiting All Hallows on Friday. The children had a great time exploring the school, meeting staff and discovering some of the exciting opportunities on offer. It was a lovely chance for everyone to get a feel for secondary school life and start thinking about the next stage of their education. A great day out!
Home Practice
Reading - Use your home reading to read every night for 30 minutes. You also have a reading diary that must be used for the title of the book and any challenges chosen.
We will test your spellings and give out your next set on Monday
All spellings still are on Sumdog to practise.
Maths Challenges:
Sumdog
Counting: This week I would like you to practise counting in powers of 10 like we have done in class.
Draw a line with some marks on it. You could write the numbers as you count up or down, then double check it to make sure you have said the correct numbers.
Start with different numbers and count up 10 numbers then back again in 10s, 100s, 1000s, 10,000s, 100,000s or 1,000,000s.
Times Tables: This week there are 100 times table questions to practise on Sumdog!
This week in Year 6
In English, we have continued to enjoy The Nowhere Emporium. This week, we explored the character of Ellie and how her relationship with Daniel has developed throughout the story. We also looked at how authors create tension and suspense in their writing, using the dramatic performance of Vindictus Sharpe as our inspiration. The children produced some excellent descriptions, choosing powerful vocabulary and varied sentence structures to build tension and keep the reader interested. Some super writing, Year 6!
In Maths, we have been developing our multiplication skills by using the grid method to solve some trickier calculations. The children have been applying their place value knowledge to partition numbers and work through each stage of the method carefully. Everyone has shown great determination when tackling more challenging problems. Super maths!
In RE, we explored the links between Laudato Si', Pope Francis' letter about caring for our common home, and the second story of Creation in Genesis. We discussed how God entrusted humanity with the responsibility of caring for the Earth and considered what this means for us today. The children made some thoughtful connections between scripture and the importance of looking after our world.

In Art, we have been continuing our work on World War Two silhouettes, using our grid drawing skills to scale up our designs. Everyone worked carefully to keep their shapes and proportions accurate as we prepared our artwork for the next stage. Next week, we will be using these designs to create our card sculptures, bringing our 2D artwork into 3D!
In PE, we have been adapting our invasion games skills to handball. We focused on passing, moving into space and working together to create attacking opportunities. The children enjoyed applying the skills we have developed over the past few weeks to a new game, with some great teamwork and communication on show.
Have a lovely weekend,
