Year 6 Friday Blog 4th September 2026

Year 6 have made a fantastic start to the new school year! We have been incredibly impressed with how well everyone has settled into their new class and adapted to our routines. The children have approached each day with enthusiasm and have already shown us what a hardworking, determined and talented group they are.

We have certainly hit the ground running, producing some excellent writing and tackling some challenging place value work. Everyone has demonstrated a brilliant recall of their Year 5 learning and, most importantly, shown excellent learning behaviours. When the work has become tricky, the children have persevered, supported one another and kept going. We are very proud of them all and are looking forward to a wonderful year together!

Home Practice

Reading: We will give out home reading books next week. Continue to read regularly, below you'll find a breakdown of the reading domains which your child will be tested on at the end of year. It is important that we work on these skills throughout the coming year.

Times Tables: This week we have set a bumper times tables challenge on Sumdog. There are 100 questions to answer! Everyone should still have access to times tables rock stars as well. Practice, practice, Practice!

Maths: This week's maths challenge is looking at place value for numbers to 1,000,000.

Spelling: We have sent home this weeks home spellings that the children will be tested on on Friday. These home spellings will improve rote learning skills and vocabulary.

This week in Year 6

English

This week, we began our English work with some fantastic writing. The children impressed us with their creativity, ambitious vocabulary and careful presentation. They have worked hard to develop their ideas and have responded positively to feedback, showing that they are ready to become confident and accomplished Year 6 writers. We are also excited to begin exploring our new class novel, The Nowhere Emporium by Ross MacKenzie, which will inspire much of our reading and writing over the coming weeks.

Maths

In Maths, we have begun our work on place value. The children have demonstrated a strong recall of the knowledge and skills they developed in Year 5 and have used these foundations to tackle some difficult Year 6 challenges. We have been particularly impressed by their resilience: even when the problems have become tricky, everyone has continued to think carefully, try different approaches and explain their reasoning. It has been a very promising start to our Year 6 Maths journey!

RE

In RE, we created our own Year 6 covenants and discussed the qualities we would like to see in one another throughout the year. We thought carefully about how we can create a kind, supportive and respectful classroom in which everyone feels valued. The children then produced some fantastic Canva posters to share their ideas and commitments. Check out our galleries to see some of our fabulous creations.

History

This week, we began our exciting new History topic on the Second World War. We explored Germany and compared modern-day Germany and Europe with what they were like in 1937. We were fortunate to have some experts in our class who confidently shared their knowledge of Germany with everyone! We also learned about different systems of government and considered how countries can be governed in very different ways. Next week, we will investigate the events and circumstances that led Germany towards war. We've attached some of the facts the children will learn over the topic below.

As the oldest children in our school, Year 6 have many exciting new responsibilities. Every child has been given a leadership role and will have the opportunity to make a positive contribution to school life. This week, we also began our lunchtime rota, which will give everyone the chance to work on our lunchtime buddy team. We are confident that the children will be wonderful role models and are looking forward to seeing them grow in confidence as they take on these important roles.
