This week in Year 6
First of all, a massive well done to Year 6, who were amazing in church presenting our Harvest Assembly to our school community. Everyone spoke clearly, sang beautifully and did a great job of reminding us all about the importance of Harvest, being thankful for what we have and looking after our common home. We were very proud of the way the children led the celebration and represented Year 6. Well done everyone!

In English, we have continued to love reading The Nowhere Emporium. This week, our focus has been on speech and how we can incorporate dialogue effectively into our narrative writing. We practised using split speech sentences, choosing interesting alternatives to ‘said’ and adding actions and description to show the reader how a character is speaking. We are really starting to see some ambitious vocabulary and varied sentence structures appearing in our writing now. Keep it up, Year 6!
In Maths, we have been exploring some new mental maths strategies, thinking carefully about how we can manipulate numbers to make calculations quicker and easier. We also started our next topic on multiplication and division, using what we already know about number facts to tackle some trickier calculations and problems.
In RE, we stepped into the shoes of Fr Georges Lemaître, the Catholic priest and scientist who first proposed what became known as the Big Bang theory. We wrote letters responding to questions from our parishioners, thinking carefully about how science and faith can work alongside one another when we explore the beginnings of our universe. The children produced some thoughtful responses and used everything they have learned over the past few weeks to explain some quite complex ideas clearly.
In Art, we used our grid drawing skills to scale up our dog drawings to A3. Everyone had great success with this and showed real concentration when transferring each section of their original drawing onto a much larger scale. The finished pieces look fantastic and show just how effective the grid method can be. Next, we will use this learning as we move towards creating our 3D sculptures.
In PE, we extended our invasion games learning by playing 3v5 attack versus defence games. This gave us a real challenge as we had to think carefully about creating space, communicating with teammates and making quick decisions when attacking. Our defenders also had to work together to close down space and make it difficult for the attacking team. Some great teamwork on show!
