Year 6|Childwall C of E Primary School

Welcome to the Year 6 Blog.

Year 6 have all enjoyed their first Friday play with their Reception buddies this week - well done Year 6 for being such amazing role models!

This week in Year 6

English

The Nowhere Emporium | The Occasional Bookwitch

For English, we have continued to be inspired by 'The Nowhere Emporium'. This week, we have been thinking about the character of Daniel and what we can infer about his thoughts and feelings. All of Year 6 wrote some amazing diary entries in role and worked hard to edit their writing. We also debated if the character of Lucien Silver would be good or evil using evidence that we could find in chapters 5 and 6.

Maths

Rounding 4th Grade Quiz | Wayground (formerly Quizizz)

This week we have continued to improve our place value knowledge in Maths. We have learned how to round whole numbers up to 10,000,00 and decimals with up to three decimal places. We have also learned how to find powers of 10 more than and less than a given number.

RE

In RE we have continued to focus on the second story of creation. Together, we have explored the symbolic meaning of the story and understood what important message it teaches us. We have learned that this story teaches us that we need to live in a community with each other. We also discussed what original sin is and how we can sometimes be tempted by things!

Topic

In Year 6, we are really enjoying our new WW2 topic! This week we compared Germany in 1937 to Germany today. We also learned about the differences between a democracy and a dictatorship and investigated which countries in Europe were dictatorships and which were democratic in 1937.

We have continued our Science topic, which is all about classification. We have learned about classification keys and how these can be used to categorise different animals.

In French, we have been reviewing our prior learning on greetings, numbers 0-50, age and colours.

Maths Challenges:

Sumdog

Counting: This week we have had to count in tenths to complete our rounding work. Try to count in decimal steps of 0.1, 0.2 or 0.5. You could do this out loud or write it on a piece of paper.

You could draw a numberline, like we have done in class this week. Can you count up and down in decimal tenths? How far can you go?

Times Tables: This week there are 100 times table questions to answer on Sumdog!

Place Value: This week's learning is to practise questions on place value. For further Maths work, please visit the 'Maths Training' section, where your child will be able to push their learning further with the skills that Sumdog has given them.
