Year 4

Home Practice 12th November 2021

Well done for settling back into school Year 4. Some of you are now started to push yourselves by listening more attentively and producing work you are really proud of. Keep it up!

Here’s what we have been learning in school this week ….

In English we wrote our own description of the Ceremony and the Full Moon. We used what we had learnt about the Ceremony from the book and expanded the image by including our own ideas and descriptive language. In addition, we predicted what we thought would happen now that Lila had reached the Grotto of the Fire-Fiend. Some of Year 4 have fantastic imaginations – well done!

In maths we have been drawing and interpreting bar charts. We had to number the axis appropriately and use a sharp pencil and a ruler to draw the bars accurately. We have also been practising our tables, addition strategies and counting in 6’s and 25’s.

This week we have been exploring Judaism in RE. We learnt lots of information about the Torah, including where it is kept, what language it is written in and how many letters there are in it!  We also designed our own Bar Mitzvah card for a Jewish friend.

In Science we started our new topic, Electricity. We found out about the dangers of electricity and we wrote some safety rules. Then we used a gadget called an Energy Stick to demonstrate that electricity needs a complete circuit to flow. We loved this and raised lots of questions to test. Well done, year 4! We're ready to make circuits next week!

In PE we continued our dance unit, ‘Sparks Might Fly’. Year 4 created their own freeze frames and transition movements; these all related to using an electrical device or the way in which it moves. The freeze frames and transitions were then linked together and performed to the class. In our tag rugby session we practised our throwing and passing skills and tried to score a try!

In our French lesson we read a text in French about Le Jour du Souvenir (Remembrance Day) and chose the right words to fill in the blanks so that it made sense. Then we read it aloud in French.

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Thursday (18th November 2021). Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

Remember - you can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’.

Counting

This week, please practise counting in 6’s and 25’s – draw a line and some marks on it like I do in class. You could write the numbers down as you count up.  When you count down, cover the numbers up, say the number, then reveal what you have got written down to check you’ve said the correct number.

Count in 6’s

For example, start at 0 and count up to 72 and back again (this will help with your 6 times tables)

0   6   12    18  etc                     72   66    60   etc

Start at 54 and count up to 102 and down again

54  60   66   etc                   102   96   90    etc

Count in 25’s

Start at 0 and count up to 325 and back again

25  50  75   etc           325   300   275  etc

Start at 450 and count up to 775 and back again

450  475   500   etc             775   750   725    etc

Spellings

The spellings this week explore words ending with the ‘k’ sound spelt ‘-que’ which is French in origin. Please practise your spellings each evening at home.  You will be tested on them next Thursday (18th November 2021). We have discussed in class different strategies you could use to help you learn them and you could always use ‘Look say cover write check’.

antique        mosque         opaque         unique          cheque

boutique      oblique         conquer        critique       grotesque

croquet        plaque          technique     mystique      picturesque

You have been set 2 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A spelling challenge based on the spellings above
  • A times table challenge based on the 3 and 6 times tables

Please make sure you log on and have a go! Many of you are still not accessing Sumdog on a daily basis. Little and often is the key to success!

Number bonds

This week we have been practising adding numbers mentally. Please practise this using Daily 10.    Remember to partition numbers and use a numberline to help.

Eg 15 + 7 = 22

The number 7 can be partitioned into 5 and 2 to make this easier to calculate

eg 15 + 5 = 20                 20 + 2 = 22

Click on the link above, then on Play Game.

Click on the pink Select button and choose Level 2

Click on the purple Select button and choose Addition

Click on the green Select button and choose Upto 25.

Choose your time interval or ‘manual’ if you want to move on when you are ready.
