Year 4 Blog Thursday 22nd October 2026
Date: 22nd Oct 2026 @ 2:05pm

We have had a brilliant half term in Year 4 and worked really hard!
Our learning this week
In English, we read a chapter of the novel and made inferences about the kind of person Kensuke was.
We then wrote a character description of Kensuke – using evidence from the text to support our ideas.
We also used dictionaries to find out the meaning of words from the novel.
You can see us acting as word detectives in our gallery.

In Maths, we interpreted data and solved one-step problems from information presented in bar charts.
Additionally, we presented and interpreted data using pictograms.

In RE, we listened to a story about the live of Oscar Romero.
We then considered how his life and work was an example of faith made active in love.
In PSHE, we recapped what makes a good friendship and how we might be able to tell if someone is friends with somebody else.
We also discussed text messages and how it is sometimes difficult to decide how they are meant to be read as we cannot hear the intonation or tone of a voice.
In our Science lesson, we recapped animal groups (mammal / bird / fish / reptile / amphibian) and suggested some questions to distinguish differences between the different groups based on features.
We then created a classification key using yes / no questions and post-it notes.
Have a look at some examples in our gallery.
In PE, we practised our throwing and catching skills in games of bench ball and dodgeball.
There are some pictures in our gallery.
Home Practice
As it is half term, there is no Home Practice. However, please try and read every single day as this really helps unlock your learning.
In addition, please practise your tables using the games on Hit the Button and Rockstars. Little and often is the key to success.
Poetry Recital Competition
In class, we have both performed and written some poetry. It is a statutory requirement in the National Curriculum that children learn to recite poems from heart.
With this in mind, we are entering a poetry recital competition against local schools – this is to be held at Priory Academy in November.
We are therefore asking all the children to learn a poem over the half term holiday – a copy is attached to the blog.
If you wish to learn a poem of your own choice, please ensure that it is a ‘published’ poem (rather than one written by yourself) and no longer than 5 minutes long when performed.
After half term, we will hold an internal competition and the winner will go forward to the local competition. Further details will follow in due course.
