Year 4 Blog

Friday 19th May 2023

We have had a very busy week in Year 4! Here’s a brief overview of what we have been learning:

In English, we continued to explore noun phrases and tried to write our own which also included a prepositional phrase. In order to write an expanded noun phrase we:

  1. Chose a noun - for example,  cookie
  2. Added a determiner - The cookie
  3. Chose 2 adjectives - The tasty, crumbly cookie
  4. Included a prepositional phrase - The tasty, crumbly cookie with the marshmallow pieces
  5. Finished the sentence - The tasty, crumbly cookie with the marshmallow pieces fell on the floor.

Next week we hope to include some noun phases / expanded noun phrases in our writing.

In Maths, we compared and ordered angles.  We also identified vertical and horizontal lines of symmetry in shapes, completed symmetrical figures and named and identified the 3 different types triangle.

In RE, we listened to the story of Paul and discussed how he changed. Following this, we learnt about some of the places Paul visited to spread the Good News, and how the Holy Spirit gave Paul new life and happiness.

In French, we practised spelling number words to 12 using our phonics to help. Then we moved on to learning the vocabulary for parts of the face.

In PE, we took part in some athletic activities in preparation for our sports day.

In Science, we experimented with our home-made string telephones. We investigated how they worked, how the sound travelled and what stopped the telephone from working. We also tried to make improvements if needed. Well done Year 4 – you can see some pictures of our science investigation here.

This week we also attended the parish mass on Monday morning. Following this, we enjoyed juice and cake in the school hall as part of our First Holy Communion Celebrations. You can see some pictures here. In addition, we attended the Ascension Day Mass on Thursday afternoon.

The CEO of the Foxton Centre in Preston also visited on Friday morning.  He gave us a very interesting talk about how they help the homeless community of Preston.
