What a lovely first week back it has been in Year 3! The children have settled back into school life beautifully and are already working hard in our second half-term together. We have also begun preparing for our Advent Assembly, which will take place in a couple of weeks. The children are very excited to start learning and practising their songs.

Home practice

Continue with all your brilliant home reading. We have a huge selection of books at school so if you want to have some more, just let us know through the reading diary.

This week we have set 3 Sumdog challenges. Try and spread this practice through the week as regular practice will have a bigger impact on your child's future learning. We have been learning all about multiplication this week and the 4 times table in maths. Here is a song we will be singing in the weeks ahead.

Your spellings this week are a recap on our Key Stage 1 common words.

This Week in Year 3

In English, we have started reading Journey by Aaron Becker, a stunning wordless picture book that tells the adventures of a young girl armed only with her imagination and a red crayon. The children have been putting words to the story and creating some truly fantastic sentences. Next week, we will move on to the sequel Quest and begin exploring descriptive writing and sentence starters to make our writing even more exciting.

In Maths, we have been learning all about multiplication and how to use pattern spotting to solve problems efficiently. We have also introduced the 4 times table, and the children have shown great determination in tackling these new facts. Next week, we will be learning how to use the grid method to help us multiply larger numbers, an exciting next step.

Our new Science topic is Rocks, and the children loved investigating different types of rocks and exploring their features. We discovered what makes each rock unique and created some brilliant informative posters to showcase our learning.

In RE, we have started our new topic, Prophecy and Promise, by learning about the day of rest and the importance of the Mass. Throughout this half term, we will also be reflecting on the season of Advent and preparing our hearts for Christmas.

Finally, in PE, we have kicked off our new hockey unit. The children have enjoyed learning how to control the ball, move with precision and work as a team during our mini-games.
