Year 3 Friday blog 24th April 2026
Date: 24th Apr 2026 @ 1:30pm
Welcome to your Friday update
Welcome back to school. The sun is shining and everyone looks smart in their summer uniforms! The Summer Term is here!

Home Practice
Keep up with the great reading at home. We can see a lot of children showing interest in some fab series of books including, Dogman, Harry Potter and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Lots of super future reading habits being formed!
We have set some maths challenges on Sumdog. Please ensure these are completed as they will boost fluency in the key learning that will support your child in all their future maths learning.
Keep counting, a secure knowledge of the number system will also help secure new concepts and learning.
Practice counting in 2s, 4s, and 8s. Forwards and backwards. What patterns can you spot?
Here are your spellings. We are looking at the statutory words for Year 3 this week. To remember these spellings its useful to remember the tricky bits.
fruit, grammar, group, guard, guide, heard, heart, height, history, imagine, increase, important, interest, island, knowledge, learn, length, library
This week in Year 3
In RE, we read Luke’s Gospel and explored the story of the Road to Emmaus. The children engaged really thoughtfully with the message of the story and we spent time looking at a range of artwork that depicted this moment. Inspired by what they had seen, the children created their own paintings and responses. There are some fantastic pieces, please take a look at our gallery.

In English, we have continued reading Journey to Jo’burg. This week, Naledi and Tiro finally arrived in Jo’burg and visited their mum in Parktown. We focused on describing the differences between Parktown and Soweto, thinking carefully about what the children would have seen in each place. The class worked hard to compare the two settings and use clear, descriptive language in their writing.
In Maths, we have been learning all about time. The children practised reading digital clocks and began solving problems involving time. This is a key life skill and the class approached it with great focus and determination.

In PE, we started our new striking and fielding unit. We played a game of cricket and practised our throwing and catching skills. It was great to see the children working together and developing their coordination.

In History, we investigated the Ancient Egyptian afterlife and the process of mummification. The children were fascinated to learn what happened to the body after death and how the organs were carefully removed and preserved.
In Music, we have been learning to play the ukulele. The children were introduced to the C chord and worked together to play London’s Burning as a class. It was a great session and lots of fun.
We would also like to warmly welcome Miss Singleton, our student teacher, to Year 3. She has really enjoyed meeting the class and the children have given her a super St Oswald's welcome.
