Year 3 Blog - Friday 12th September 2025
Date: 12th Sep 2025 @ 2:21pm
Welcome to your Friday Blog
Home Practice
Everyone has been given a reading book this week. Please try to read a little every night, around 10–15 minutes. The regular routines for home practice will set your children up well for all future learning they meet. Little and often is the key!
Sumdog
We have also set three Sumdog challenges — two maths and one spelling. Have a go at these across the week and try to do a little every night. Please keep up some counting practice at home too. A little counting every day makes a big impact on your child’s knowledge and understanding of the number system. This can be through fun games such as counting tennis (take turns to say 1, 2 or 3 numbers in sequence — the winner is the one who reaches the target number) or by singing some of our counting songs. Here is one we sang this week to practise our 2s, 5s and 10s.
Spellings
Your spellings have also been sent home, have a go at the activity sheet on the back and do a little practice every day This doesn’t need to be handed in.
This week’s spellings are:
house, glass, letter, skipped, puppet, door, duck, monkey, who, write, toy, tube, nurse, hair, eight, cakes, night, fruit, should, picture
This week in Year 3
English
In English this week we have started reading our class novel, The Twits by Roald Dahl. We read all about men with hairy faces, met Mr and Mrs Twit and read about the horrible tricks they play on each other. Everyone wrote some great pieces, describing the Twits and retelling their horrid pranks. We also acted out The Shrinks chapter and wrote some fantastic scripts.
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about the place value of three-digit numbers. Everyone showed good understanding and asked some brilliant questions in our lessons.
Art
We also started our art topic on exploring charcoal. The children created some imaginative pieces and really enjoyed experimenting with different effects. See our gallery to have a look at our work.
Science
In our new Science topic we are exploring skeletons in animals and humans. We looked at a human skeleton and learned the scientific names for some of the bones in our body. We also learned that the human body has 206 bones, but a newborn baby has more than 300! Here is some of the vocabulary we will meet in the coming weeks.
Swimming
This week we also started our swimming lessons. Everyone gave it their best effort and showed real determination in the pool. The swim coaches were very impressed with the children’s positive attitude and how supportive they were of each other. Well done, Year 3! Remember, no Swimming this week due to refurbishments being made at the swimming pool.
Thank you to all who attended the Meet the Teacher meeting on Thursday. You will find the slides from the presentation attached below. If you were unable to attend, don't hesitate to contact us to discuss any questions you may have about this year.
