Year 3 Friday blog 16th May 2025
Date: 16th May 2025 @ 2:29pm
It’s been another busy and brilliant week in Year 3!
Home Learning
Reading – Please read every night for at least 15 minutes. Don’t forget to record it in your reading diary!
Maths – We’ve set two challenges on Sumdog this week. They focus on multiplication, division, and times tables – perfect for reinforcing the grid method we’ve been learning in class.
Spellings – This week’s spellings all end in –que or –gue. Practise reading and spelling them at home:
league, tongue, antique, unique, mosque, fatigue, rogue, vague, intrigue, dialogue, analogue, argue, plaque, epilogue, plague, argue, torque, barbeque.
Counting – Keep counting too! Check out all our counting songs and videos on past blog posts to practise your 2s, 5s, 10s, and challenge yourself with 3s, 4s and 8s.
This week in Year 3
In English, we stepped into Bertie’s shoes from The Butterfly Lion, writing heartfelt letters begging not to be sent away to boarding school. We also worked together to write and perform playscripts retelling the magical moment Bertie first met the girl. The children really enjoyed bringing the characters to life and thinking carefully about dialogue and stage directions.
In maths, we have been getting to grips with the grid method for multiplication. Everyone showed great resilience breaking down larger numbers and using their place value knowledge to solve problems step by step.
In history, we compared life in Ancient Egypt to life in Stone Age Britain. We explored how the two time periods were different and learned all about Egyptian hieroglyphics. We even had a go at writing our own names using the ancient symbols!
Our new science topic on plants is off to a great start. We made our own mini books explaining the importance of plants, what they need to grow, and how they help our world.
In PSHE, we talked about shared responsibility. This led to a brilliant class discussion about the environment and how we can all play our part in protecting it.
We also had our fourth yoga session this week, focusing on confidence. We learned some tricky new poses and showed great balance, strength, and perseverance.
