Calcot Schools - Year 2

Home Practice

Reading:

In Year 2, children should read for at least 15/20 minutes every night and talk about the book.

This will help with understanding the text and learning new words.

Remember you will get a sticker on your book mark for every book you read!

Spelling:

Please practise these spellings for your quiz on Friday (23.05.25):

knee            know   knight    knife     knock     knew        knot         knit        knead    knack

Sumdog:

Please complete the time challenge by next Friday.

Counting:

Starting at 0, count in fives forwards and backwards to 60.

This will really help with telling the time. You could also look at the clock and count in fives around the numbers on the clock face.

Times Tables:

Great effort in our quiz this week.

Next week, Thursday (22.05.25) we will quiz your knowledge of the 2 times tables.

English

We started a new book called Snail Mail. We had a great discussion about what snail mail is and the developments in technology which mean we can communicate with each other more easily and quickly.

We used the map from the book to find out where Tiger the snail visited. He sent a postcard from each country.

We used the atlases and globes to see where the places are and what the flags look like.

We then planned our own story which we will write next week.

Telling the Time | 5 minute intervals

Maths

We have been learning about time this week.

The children now know, five, ten, quarter/fifteen, twenty, twenty-five and half/thirty minutes past the hour.

You could look at the minutes to the hour (as above) and keep asking your child to tell you the time. It will really help them to become more familiar with all the times.

We used clocks to make the times ourselves and we went outside to make shadow clocks.

History

We found out more about Queen Elizabeth II and her favourite palaces and castles, such as Windsor and Balmoral.

Science

We had a good look at our beans and the different conditions are starting to have an effect on the germination and growth of the beans. We will bring them home next week and continue to grow them.

Forest School

We learnt about the flower moon which happened on Monday. A full moon happens once every 29 and a half days and May is when wildflowers start showing their beauty, so this Moon got the flowery title. We looked at pictures of the lunar cycle and then we made our own flowers out of natural materials.
