Home Practice
Reading: In Year 1, children should read for at least 10/15 minutes daily and talk about the book/new words they come across.
This will help them become more confident and fluent readers.
Book changing day is on a Monday each week.
Please remember to send book bags in every day as we will read with your children on a regular basis.
Spelling: This week's tricky words are: oh, their, could, because.
Please practise reading and spelling these words. We will have a quiz at the end of next week.
Sumdog: Complete the number bonds within 20
and spelling challenges (the four tricky words above).
Counting: Chant number bonds to 10 and try to learn them by heart.
You could write them down. For example, 0+10=10, 1+9=10, 2+8=10, 3+7=10 and so on. Talk about the patterns you see.

English
Our book this week was - The Secret Sky Garden by Linda Sarah and Fiona Lumbers
The children drew a picture and wrote a description of their very own secret sky garden, making sure they included things they could see, smell, taste, touch and hear.
They also wrote an information poster with facts about the bumble bees that lived in the sky garden and a fantastic simile poem that is on display in class.
Phonics/Handwriting
The children recapped phase 3/4 and learnt some more phase 5 phonics this week.
Building on the sounds they already knew, we looked at oi/oy, ur/ir, oo/ue and or/aw.
They have been neatly writing upper case and lower case letters on handwriting paper.

Maths
The children have started their addition and subtraction topic this week.
They have been learning the number bonds to 10 and recognising teen numbers are created by adding 10 and a 1 digit number for example, 10+5=15, 10+7=17.
We also learnt that adding can be done in any order but we put the largest number first when subtracting.

RE
The children watched a clip about our beautiful planet and all the creatures that God created.
Then they drew a picture to go with the Bible quote...'Let the Earth produce all kinds of animal life.'

Art/RE
'Let there be light.'
The children created either candles or the sun on the horizon as a mosaic using small pieces of coloured card.
History
We are coming to the end of this topic. The children will be exploring old toys.

Science
We recapped animal categories.

We worked together in teams to make dens and nests to keep our animals dry. we collected natural materials and showed wonderful problem-solving and cooperation.
Forest School is on a Wednesday - wellington boots are needed.
