We’ve had another fantastic week in Year 3! The children have been working so hard and showing great enthusiasm for all our learning.
Home Practice
Keep up with regular reading at home and remember to change books when needed. Practising little and often makes such a big difference!
In maths, we have been applying our written methods to solve subtraction and addition problems. This has been a great challenge, and the children have shown brilliant problem-solving skills. We have set some Sumdog challenges to reinforce this learning and improve our number fluency.
Spellings have been sent home today. They all end in -sion. keep practising a little each night to help improve accuracy and confidence.
division, invasion, confusion, decision, collision, television, mission, fission, suupervision, submission, expansion, vision, version, illusion, immersion, corrosion, mansion, pension
This week in Year 3
This week in RE we continued our learning about the Mass and focused particularly on the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The children learned that this is the part of the Mass where we remember the Last Supper and where the bread and wine are offered to God and become the Body and Blood of Jesus. We talked about the important actions and prayers that take place during this part of the Mass, including the offertory, the Eucharistic prayer and Holy Communion. The children showed a really thoughtful understanding of why this is such a special and sacred moment in the mass.

In English, we have started our new class text Journey to Jo’burg. We were introduced to the main characters, Naledi and Tiro, and learned about their brave plan to walk all the way to Johannesburg to try to find their mother. The children were very interested in the challenges the characters might face on such a long journey, and we had some excellent discussions about why they feel they must go. We are looking forward to following their journey and discovering what happens next.

In Maths, we have revisited the formal methods for addition and subtraction. While the children are beginning to understand the written methods, we have noticed that some pupils are not yet fully secure with their number facts to 20. When these facts are not automatic, it can make the written methods much more difficult. To help build confidence and fluency, we have launched a Number Facts Challenge on Sumdog. Practising these facts regularly will make a huge difference and will help the children tackle more complex calculations with greater ease.
In PE, we began our new superhero dance topic. The children explored how different emotions and expressions can be shown through movement and used this to help them create their own superhero characters. They then worked in groups to begin building short dance sequences that showed their superhero’s personality and powers through movement. It was fantastic to see their creativity and confidence grow as they performed their ideas. We also welcomed Freddie Fit into school this week, who certainly put us through our paces with a high-energy fitness session! The children showed great enthusiasm and effort throughout.

In History, we explored the society of Ancient Egypt and learned about the different roles people had. The children discovered that Egyptian society was organised like a pyramid, with the Pharaoh at the very top, followed by priests, scribes, soldiers, craftsmen and farmers. We talked about how each group had an important role to play in keeping society running and discussed what daily life might have been like for people in these different jobs.

In Science, we celebrated Science Week by taking part in a live lesson all about light and how it can be used to create movies. The children learned how early filmmakers used light and shadow to tell stories and explored some of the clever techniques used to create moving images. They were fascinated to see how simple ideas using light can be used to produce impressive visual effects.
We also say goodbye to Ryoko who has been working with us over the past two weeks. We have learned how to write our name in Japanese and made some beautiful gift boxes using traditional Japanese patterns. Thank you to Yuicho and his students for another brilliant experience for our children.

Finally, in DT, we continued our learning about mechanisms. This week the children tried to build a more complex mechanism using the knowledge they gained in our previous lesson. Not all of them worked perfectly, but this actually turned into a fantastic learning opportunity. The children evaluated their designs, discussed what had gone wrong and thought carefully about how they might improve them next time. This kind of problem-solving is a really important part of the design process.
