Year 4

Home Practice 19th March 2021

We will now be reverting back to Home Practice which can be found on the Year 4 Class Page each Friday.

Home Practice will provide a short insight into our learning from the week, as well as tasks to be completed.  These will include reading, tables, spellings and Sumdog challenges.  It is important that you compete these tasks, as they will help you to progress further with your learning.

We have had a super week in Year 4.  We’ve revisited place value in Maths and refined some counting skills, especially counting in 4’s and 8’s. In English, we wrote a letter from a character to her father and tried to think carefully about the types of sentence we were writing – whether it was a command, statement, question or exclamation.  Our science topic has been very interesting – we recorded results from an experiment to see the effect of different liquids on egg shells and were amazed by the results! In addition, we made our own digestive system – it was gruesome!

Reading

Please read for 20 minutes each evening to an adult at home.  Make sure you discuss the story and the characters.  Find the meaning of any new words too.  Reading every night will help you read more fluently and with understanding.

You can find even more books to read on our website.  Go to Year 4, Home Learning and click on Oxford Owl.  Use the class login and password and explore lots of books to read.

Times tables

You have been given your own individual times table target.  Please make sure you continue to practise your times tables in preparation for your test next week, on Wednesday (24th March 2021).  Ask someone at home to test you on your tables – can you recall them quickly and accurately?

You can also practise your tables playing ‘Hit the button’.  Select the times tables or division button and then the table that you want to practise.  This is an excellent way to practise your tables.  Either type in ‘hit the button’ (the game is on Top Marks) or use the link below:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Spellings

The spellings this week are irregular plurals.  Each time ‘ves’ needs to be added to the word ending in ‘f’ or ‘fe’, to spell the plural. These words will be tested on Thursday (25th March 2021).  We have discussed different strategies to learn spellings in class, or you can always use ‘Look say cover write check’.

calf              calves          half             halves          knife           knives

leaf             leaves          shelf            shelves        thief           thieves

yourself       yourselves    themselves

Sumdog Challenges

You have been set 3 challenges on Sumdog:

  • A spelling challenge based on the above spellings (adding ‘ves’ to some words ending in ‘f’ or ‘fe’)
  • A maths challenge related to mental addition and subtraction facts within 1000
  • A maths times table challenge (based on the 3, 4 and 8 times tables)

Please make sure you log on and have a go!
