Welcome to your Friday Blog

We have had another busy week in Year 6 with lots of great learning across the curriculum.

Home Practice

Please complete the following tasks by next Friday: 

Reading - Use your home reading to read every night for 30 minutes. You also have a reading diary that must be used for the title of the book and any challenges chosen. 

Books will be changed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. 

Spelling -  Please practise the following spellings this week, which are homophones and other words that are often confused: 

All spellings are on Sumdog to practise for our test next Friday. 

Maths Challenges: Sumdog 

Counting: Try to count in powers of 10 (1000, 10,000, 100,000 etc). You could do this out loud or write it on a piece of paper.

You could draw a numberline to help you. Can you count up and down in powers of ten? How far can you go?  Challenge yourself by choosing different starting numbers and practising your exchanging. 

Times Tables: This week there are 100 questions to answer on Sumdog! 

Place Value: This week's learning is to practise questions on addition and subtraction. For further Maths work, please visit the 'Fluency Training' section, where your child will be able to push their learning further with the skills they are weakest on.

This week in Year 6

In Maths, we continued to develop our reasoning and mental maths skills, thinking carefully about the most efficient strategies to use when solving different problems. The children explained their methods and justified how they reached their answers.

In RE, we continued our Creation and Covenant branch, thinking more deeply about the relationship between humanity and God. We explored messages from scripture and considered what they mean for us today. The children then produced some thoughtful homilies around the theme of humanity and God.

In Science, we further investigated our circulatory system and the heart. We learned about the different chambers of the heart, the different types of blood vessels and even explored the different blood groups. There were lots of great questions as we discovered more about how our bodies work.

In Art, we explored negative space and silhouettes. We looked carefully at how artists can use the space around an object as part of their artwork and practised sketching silhouettes and creating striking shapes. Check out our gallery to see some of our work.

In PE, we continued developing our invasion game skills, including netball. We worked on moving into space, passing accurately and working together when attacking and defending. Our main focus was teamwork and communication, and it was great to see everyone encouraging one another and improving together.

In PSHE, we spent some time thinking about our ambitions for Year 6 and beyond. The children reflected on their learning goals, personal development and ambitions outside of school before writing letters to their future selves. We are looking forward to reading these again later in the year and seeing how much everyone has achieved.

On Friday, our Faith Team and some Year 6 volunteers helped at the Caritas lunch in the parish hall as part of our Faith in Action Award. They served food and spent time chatting with our parishioners. We were very proud of the way they represented our school and gave their time to help others.

Finally, a huge well done to the boys who represented school in the football league at Priory. The boys won four games and drew one, showing excellent teamwork and making a very strong start to the league.
