Year 4

Home Learning Wednesday 20th January 2021

Good morning Year 4.  Well done for keeping up the fantastic work – I have really enjoyed seeing your learning on Seesaw, please keep posting.

Please complete today’s work as if you were in school, taking care with your handwriting, spellings, punctuation, vocabulary, and of course, your presentation. Remember to try and do the work on the day it is set as it usually follows on from the previous day.  It is important that you continue to work hard recapping and practising previous learning, as well as learning new things.

If you need any reading books, please let us know and we will arrange for some books to be collected from the school office.

Reading

Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes.  Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.

Tell someone what you think will happen next – explain why you think this will happen using ideas and evidence from the text.

Spelling

These are your new spellings which will be tested on Thursday 21st January 2021.  They all have the prefix super.  A PREFIX is a group of letters that change the meaning of a word when they are added to the START. Super means ‘above’ or ‘over’.

superstar       supermarket          supernova              supermodel

superpower    superhero              supernatural          superglue

supersonic     superintendent      supersaturated      superstore

Write the long date Wednesday 20th January 2021

Look at the word, cover it up then write it. Check it carefully.  Then, put your pencil on the page, close your eyes and write the word again without looking and without taking your pencil off the paper. Can you spell it correctly?

English

Today you are going to be editing the spy story you wrote yesterday. You will need a different coloured pen or pencil (to use like you would your purple editing pen).

  1. Read through your work carefully OUT LOUD (to check you haven’t missed out any words and that it makes sense!) At the bottom write 2 things you are proud of and 1 thing that you would improve if you were to write the story again.
  2. Read through your work and find a short sentence where more information could be given – use a different colour pen or pencil to edit it
  3. Read through your work and correct any words that need capital letters. Correct any words where you have a capital letter but they shouldn’t be there (correct with your coloured pen or pencil)
  4. Read through your work and include punctuation where needed, for example, is your speech punctuated correctly? Is a sentence too long and you need to split it up with full stops?
  5. Read through your work and improve 3 sentence openers – check the ISPACE sheet from yesterday for suggestions
  6. Choose 3 words which you could change to more ambitious vocabulary.  Write the alternative word neatly in your work.

Write the long date Wednesday 20th January 2021

Write the learning objective Can I edit my work?

Re-write one or two paragraphs of your work in your best joined up handwriting with all your corrections. Compare it to the original.  Remember, writing is a process, we need to read, improve, read, improve …..

Please share your edited work on Seesaw

Times tables

Practise your 4 and 8 times tables on Sumdog (a challenge has been set).

On Monday 4th January, you were all given your individual table targets (if you are unsure, please message me on Seesaw). Please practise your table target using ‘Hit the button’ and the link below.  If you are on ‘free’ tables, please practise a times table or division fact which you know you find tricky.

If you are in school this week, you will be tested on your individual target on Thursday 21st January 2021 - if you are on ‘free’ tables, you will be tested on ÷8.

Play ‘Hit the answer’ – see if you can get faster and add your results to your log.  Play ‘Hit the question’ – see if you can get faster and add your results to your log.

By the end of Year 4 you should know all your tables and division facts, therefore please keep practising!

Counting

Please count in 4’s from 500 to 650 and back again – can you go any further?

Count in 8’s from 300 to 400 and back again – can you go any further? (if you get stuck, add 8 on to your last number if counting up or subtract 8 if counting down)

Count in 10’s from 2050 to 3090 and back again.  Count in 10’s from 1552 to 1692 and back again.  Think about what you found tricky?
