Year 4

Home Learning Monday 25th January 2021

Good morning Year 4.  I hope you had a lovely weekend.  I was shocked when I woke up on Saturday morning and saw the snow! Although it was quite chilly, it was still lovely to go outside for a walk and some fresh air – I hope you managed to do something you enjoy too.

Keep doing your best and working as independently as you can.  It is important that you continue to work hard, both recapping and practising previous learning, as well as learning new things. I have enjoyed seeing your work on Seesaw – please keep posting what you can.

Reading

Please read out loud to someone at home for 20 minutes.  Make sure you discuss what has happened in the chapter / story so far.

Find ten adjectives (a word that describes a noun) and write the words you have found in your Home Learning book. To find an adjective, first find a noun.  Then look for any words which describe it.

eg. The hat on the chair was blue.

Monty the sleepy dragon was guarding his valuable treasure

Purple words = nouns                    Red words = adjectives

Spelling

These are your new spellings which will be tested on Thursday 28th January 2021.  They all have the prefix inter.  A PREFIX is a group of letters that change the meaning of a word when they are added to the START. Inter means ‘amongst’ or ‘during’.

interact         international          intercity      interlink

interview       intermediate         internet       interface

intercept       interchange           intercom      interfere

English

Last week we started our novel Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo.

Today, please read / listen to Chapter 1 of Kensuke’s Kingdom again. A copy of the book is attached to the blog and links to the audio are below.  You may read or hear information which you missed on Friday.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR1ii4BPJN4&safe=active    (Chapter 1 Part 2)

  1. Download the sheet ‘For and against’ attached to the blog.  Instructions are given on the sheet – you can complete the table on the sheet or copy the headings into your book.

Write the learning objective Can I give reasons for and against sailing around the world?

  1. Choose 3 reasons for and 3 reasons against sailing around the world.

Write one paragraph to FULLY EXPLAIN your reasons for not wanting to sail around the world.

Write one paragraph to FULLY EXPLAIN your reasons for wanting to sail around the world.

An example is given on the second page of the ‘For and against’ document.  Use the sentence openers given to help you construct your paragraphs.

Once you have finished your work, check your spellings, capital letters and punctuation very carefully.

Please share your work on Seesaw

Times tables

Following on from last week’s learning, please practise your 11 and 12 times tables on Sumdog (a challenge has been set).

Please practise your own tables target using Hit the button. If you are on ‘free’ tables, please practise a times table or division fact which you know you find tricky.  If you are in school next week, you will be tested on your individual target on Thursday 28th January 2021 – if you are on ‘free’ tables, you will be tested on ÷9.

Counting

Count in 50’s from 0 to 750 and back again.  Count in 50’s from 850 to 1550 and back again.  Think about what you found tricky?

Please count in 11’s from 11 to 132 and back again – can you go any further? (if you get stuck, add 10 then 1 onto your last number if counting up or subtract 10 then 1 if counting down). Writ the numbers down as you say them - do you notice any patterns?

Eg 11 22    22 add 10 = 32 + 1 = 33     etc

Maths

Use the link below – to play Daily 10.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Click on play game. Choose level 2, subtraction, 2 digit numbers.  Choose the time interval between each question eg 3 seconds, 5 seconds etc.  You will need to write the answers down and check them at the end.

Choose level 2, subtraction, 2 digit numbers with composition, choose a time interval and play again.

If you found this tricky last week, give yourself a longer time interval, if it was too easy, give yourself a shorter time interval.

Last week, we saw lots of arrays on the maths videos and worksheets. Many of you found this concept quite tricky. Today we will learn more about arrays in order to consolidate this learning.  It is important that you are confident with this concept as it will help with your mental and written multiplication strategies later on.

Please open the maths worksheet called ‘Arrays’ attached to the blog.

Either click on the link below which will take you to White Rose maths and watch the lesson, Using arrays

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/week-9-number-multiplication-division/

OR click on the link below for the video.

Write the short date 25.01.21

Write the learning objective Can I show an understanding of arrays?

Complete the worksheet and stick it in your book or write the answers directly into your Home Learning Book.

Check your answers from Friday in the document ‘Answers Multiply 3 numbers’.  Look carefully at any questions you got wrong.

To consolidate arrays further, I have set a challenge on Sumdog.  Please log on and have a go.

Remember, an array is a picture which helps us to understand our times tables. Multiplication is the same as repeated addition. 5 x 3 can be shown in 2 arrays:

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15                   5 + 5 + 5 = 15
