Welcome to Year 3!
Miss Smith is looking forward to encouraging the youngest juniors to develop their learning skills and independence. Y3 become even more confident in their learning as they take on various challenges to become enquiring learners over the year.
Mrs Anderson is the Teaching Assistant for Y3 and is thrilled to be helping Y3 move on with their learning.
There is a balance of formal and investigative learning styles that will help children of all abilities to achieve their potential.
To further improve their learning experience, the children will benefit from specialist teaching in French and Music.

This week has been ‘story telling’ week for Year 5. We have been inspired by Spellbinder’s performances over the years and decided to create a few stories of our own to read (and perform) to Year 3, who really enjoyed them! Great work Year 5!
This year our focus for Safer Internet Day was to Create, Connect and Share respect online. We looked at ways to be kind online and how best to share respect with one another.

Minecraft comes to St Oswald’s! We all became game designers this term during our Computing week, bringing to life the world of Minecraft and creating our own games. We had a great time experimenting with the Zombies, Iron Golems and the rest of the Minecraft Universe and unearthed some real talent in all our classes. The juniors were visited by Spellbinder today who told some great stories based on the theme, ‘Heroes and Villains’. Year 6 also enjoyed seeing him for their last time after 7 years of visits! Thank you Spellbinder.

Another successful Super Learning Day at St Oswald’s. This year we had lots of new activities and everyone had a super day. Well done everyone and thank you to all our visitors who helped make the day a huge success.
St Oswald’s Year 3/4 Gymnastic team had previously won the South Ribble finals and were now representing South Ribble as they competed against 16 other teams from around Lancashire. St Oswald’s celebrated the Euro 2016 with a tournament for Year 3, 4, 5 and 6. The competition lasted all day with the group stages in the morning and the semi finals and finals in the afternoon in front of the whole school. Congratulations to everyone who took part with lots of excellent teamwork!
The children worked so well this week to produce some excellent pieces of ‘Modern Art.’ The whole school followed the topic of FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD and studied an artist to produce their work ready for our well attended art galleries. Thank you to everyone who supported this fantastic event.
A Year 3 and 4 team were taken to Walton-le-Dale High School to compete against 14 other teams. After a long morning of fantastic team work and excellent performances, St Oswald’s won the event. Great work team! Now on to the Blackpool Finals in July!
Year 3 had a great trip to the Chester Museum learning lots about Roman life and what it was like to be a Roman soldier. We became archaeologists, Legionaries and even marched through the streets of Chester!

Longton Library had set up a Harry Potter competition where the children had to create their own spell. Year 3 created some brilliant spells and 7 of the children managed to reach the semi-finals with 5 of them making the final. Year 3 brought their scooters into school to be taught by the South Ribble Coaches on how to be ride safely. Well done to everyone for completing their Scoot Safe!

This weekend we had a beautiful flower festival to celebrate our Church’s Golden Jubilee. Our church building was completed in November 1965 and has been the heart of the Catholic community in Longton for the past 50 years.
With the heatwave hitting the UK, Years 3 and 4 had a difficult task to compete in their events for Sports Day. Both years did brilliantly trying their hardest for their houses. Well done to everyone for giving it their all during this very hot day!

Five children from Year 3 were chosen to represent St Oswald’s school for the Gymnastics competition held at Walton le Dale High School where they had to memorise a floor routine and a vault routine. Every single one of the team enjoyed the morning, performed really well and were great ambassadors for the school.

Year 3 had a brilliant time at Chester Museum where they became researchers, archaeologists and even Roman soldiers marching through Chester!
Year 3 have been very lucky to have been visited by Gaius, a Roman soldier, who came to talk about life as a Roman. He brought many real Roman artefacts which all the children were able to touch and even wear!

We had an out of this world experience with our rocket science this super learning day. Solving clues, building rockets, investigating our fuels and firing our rockets made for a busy but exciting day in mission control. Well done to everyone that took part. Super learning at its best!
Year 3 and 4 have had another great time doing lots of exercise with skipping, hula hooping and dancing. He had new challenge with the boys versus the girls for the ‘Strength Test’ where it ended in a draw! Thanks again Freddy!
Year 3 finally did their amazing dance at both the Dance Festival in school and the Friendship concert in the Guild Hall. All the hard work of practising has paid off with both performances being their best yet. Watch out Britain’s Got Talent!
Year 3 and 4 competed brilliantly at this years sports day. Records were broken, medals were won but best of all, everyone did their very best. Well done years 3 and 4!

Year 3 have had a fantastic morning at the Ribchester Museum handling real Roman artefacts and being able to try on Roman armour! They even managed to see real Roman ruins!
Year 3 have been very lucky today as a Roman has visited bringing lots of real life Roman artefacts. Well done to all the class for remembering so much about our topic!

As part of ‘Our Local Area’ topic, Year 3 assumed the roles of; Navigators, Explorers and Investigative Journalists on their trip to Longton. On our way, we met plenty of locals who helped us learn more about our local area. Well done Year 3!

Years 3 and 4 had their Sports Day, it went well and the weather was kind.
Year 3 and 4 have once again had a great time with Freddy! This time he has helped us know how to keep our heart healthy.
Year 3 welcomed a very special visitor, Miso’shi, who comes from Ghana. Miso’shi led lots of exciting activities and the children all had a colourful, action packed day, culminating in a spectacular fashion parade!
Year 3 had a fantastic time at Ribchester Museum! They were able to hold Roman artefacts, see real Roman ruins and try on replica Roman armour!
Years 3 and 4 had a super time with Freddy Fit on Red Nose Day and everyone looked amazing with their ‘red’ hair!

Year 3 have worked very hard up to Christmas and have created their own newspaper articles all about the Iron Man. They enjoyed going over to Reception Class and sharing their reports with them.
Y3 had an enjoyable and informative day in Clapham. The weather held out and the locals were friendly.
Years 3 and 4 were very lucky with the weather for their Sports Day. They supported each other brilliantly and were proud to show their parents their skill and great attitude.
Please keep “bags” to a minimum!
