Welcome to Year 1!
This year there are 34 children in our Year 1 class.
Miss Lever, Miss Bennison and Mrs Maguire-Dorr are the class teachers and are looking forward to a great year of learning. Through the year we explore, create, imagine and grow into super learners. We do lots of outdoor learning and always look forward to welcoming our chick eggs in the Spring Term.
Mrs Anderson and Mrs Hodson are the Teaching Assistants and will change reading books and support all our learners. Our Teaching and Learning apprentice, Miss Dineen will help the children with all aspects of their learning.
After doing our wanted posters for the villains in our stories, the police came to read them and they showed us what they do.
Year 1 have had the best time watching the chicks hatch and grow!

This year our focus for Safer Internet Day was to Create, Connect and Share respect online. We looked at ways to be kind online and how best to share respect with one another.
We had a super Halloween learning day dressed up. We had spectacular PE, spooky subtraction, frightening phonics, made our own potions and much more!

All the children had a fantastic day learning new skills during our 10th anniversary Super Learning Day. Year 1 and 2 sports day 2017.
Minecraft comes to St Oswald’s! We all became game designers this term during our Computing week, bringing to life the world of Minecraft and creating our own games. We had a great time experimenting with the Zombies, Iron Golems and the rest of the Minecraft Universe and unearthed some real talent in all our classes. The last half term was fantastic as we performed in music, watched our caterpillars grow and transform into cocoons and then butterflies and started mini moovers.

What a fun two weeks back in school! We had lots of new areas to explore, one was our new Police Station. We explored it and thought of questions to ask the Police. Then the Police came to visit us with their van and equipment. We got to ask them all of our questions! It was great fun!
To finish off a great two weeks, we got to dress up for World Book Day!

We have had a fantastic time looking at traditional tales so far! A police station is now open in class to catch all of the villains.
We have had lots of fun preparing for Christmas in year 1, including our nativity, a naughty elf visiting us and a visit from the dentist!
What an amazing 4 weeks! We have been learning about space and the planets, we had a space station in class and we walked on the moon!
Year two did their best to scare the Year one class today with their frightening stories. Lets hope there are no nightmares tonight!
We have been doing lots of spooky learning this week in Year 1 and we even dressed up! We have written our own stories for Room on the Broom and read them to Reception!
We have enjoyed the story of Elmer and the Lost Teddy this week. In our challenge time we have been making our own bar charts and using our phonics! Next week, we will have spooky learning all week and on Thursday 27th October, we have a special Halloween morning!
What a fantastic two weeks, we went into space, started our new story of Elmer, had a visit from the Police Horses, Year 2 came to read us their stories and much more!
We learnt about hot seating stories this week! We all pretended to be Mrs Large.
A great week, including creating our outdoor area, a visit from Freddie Fit, a surprise parcel from the Large Family and our very own tyre park!
We have made the most of the weather this week and spent our choosing time outside!

Another successful Super Learning Day at St Oswald’s. This year we had lots of new activities and everyone had a super day. Well done everyone and thank you to all our visitors who helped make the day a huge success.
Well done to all our year 1 and 2 Olympians! A fantastic effort in all their races and well done for a great display of sporting achievement.
The children worked so well this week to produce some excellent pieces of ‘Modern Art.’ The whole school followed the topic of FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD and studied an artist to produce their work ready for our well attended art galleries. Thank you to everyone who supported this fantastic event.
Year 1 had a fantastic day out at the Martin Mere Wetlands Centre. We spotted some day old cygnets, lots of ducks and some otters. We also fished for some creatures in the ponds and went on a wild walk. Thank you to all of our helpers, Mrs Faulkes, Mrs Corris, Miss Halai and Miss Steadman who took all our super photos. Well done to everyone on a great trip and a great day of learning.
A magical week in Year 1. Our Chicks arrived in style and made a home with us in our class. We watched them hatch and grow and recorded everything in our chick diaries. We were sad to see them go but look forward to hearing updates from the farmer on how they are getting on in their new home. Well done on a super few weeks year 1!

Well done to our Year 1 class on a super Mother’s Day Assembly!
We had a busy week getting ready! We made some lovely cards, bookmarks and pebbles. After our assembly we invited all our mums to come to our class for some juice and biscuits.
A fantastic effort by our children in completing the Winter welly walk. It was great fun and all for a great cause. A big thanks to everyone who sponsored our welly walkers and to Mr Gordon for organising the event. Well done everyone!
All our Infant children performed beautifully in Shine Star Shine. There was brilliant acting and singing! You can watch the video on our You Tube channel. To find our channel click on the TV icon on the class page in the ‘Children’ section.
On Saturday morning the infants came in ready for breakfast with Santa. There were plenty of games, fun and it even ended with a surprise visit from Elsa, for a story and a sing along.

Well done to all our Year 1 children on a super start to the year!
This weekend we had a beautiful flower festival to celebrate our Church’s Golden Jubilee. Our church building was completed in November 1965 and has been the heart of the Catholic community in Longton for the past 50 years.
Congratulations to all our year one and two athletes! Everyone competed brilliantly and with huge smiles on their faces! A great effort from everyone. Well done!

An exciting morning at St Oswald’s as we record our Jubilee Celebration CD.
We took a look at how our outdoors has changed from the last time we did some nature sketching in Autumn.
We looked at Antony Gormley’s Field for the British Isles and used our own ideas to create our super art works. A great effort from everybody. Well done year 1!
This week every classroom was transformed into its very own art gallery.
What a special breakfast!Olaf and Elsa popped in and everyone had a great time!
All the children performed wonderfully. The acting, narrating ,singing and percussion were all excellent!
For our senses topic we tasted cakes we baked, smelt some different spices, looked at all the different colours in our nature area. To finish off our learning we made our very own book of senses and read to reception.
So far this year we have been blessed with good weather so year 1 have taken their learning outside at every opportunity. We have been on sense walks, sketched our local area and made mini nature areas, nature monsters, leaf flowers, mini habitats, tree rubbings, witches wands and much more.

We had an out of this world experience with our rocket science this super learning day. Solving clues, building rockets, investigating our fuels and firing our rockets made for a busy but exciting day in mission control. Well done to everyone that took part. Super learning at its best!

Year 1 had a great day at Windmill farm. We fed the animals, took a train ride to an island and even had time to practice our climbing. Well done year 1 on a super trip!
After a much anticipated delivery of our eggs, we now have a flock of healthy chicks. Year 1 have been super farmers and taken wonderful care of our new recruits. We have been learning about life cycles and making some super chick hand paintings. More to follow…
This spring term we put our green fingers to the test and made some mini gardens.
This week we rang in the year of the snake in style! The infants entertained us all with their dragon dancing and celebrated the afternoon away with noodles, snake charming and fortune cookies!
This week year one visited Booths. We had a go on the tills, visited behind the scenes and some of us even sat in the Boss’s chair! A super day out!
We have been reading The Tiger Who Came To Tea this week. The tigers have been going home to have tea with the children. Year 1 children visited us to read their fabulous lion stories. They stayed for the tiger tea party too!
Year 1 have written really exciting stories about the adventures of Bob, the man on the moon. They visited Reception and read their stories very well.
