Building on the huge success of the Olympics 2012, the Government pledged to give every primary school dedicated funding for sport to ensure that PE and sport are at the heart of school life until 2020.
For 2016-2017 St Oswald’s received £9,500.The money has been used for resources including a new track marked out on both playgrounds, professional development for staff, additional sports coaching across the key stages and equipment for active playtimes.
St Oswald’s has always given PE and sport a high priority. We have had our own dedicated Sports Coach for Key Stage 2 for four years and the impact that Mrs Cookson has had on PE and sport at St Oswald’s is outstanding. We have entered many competitions and have regularly won Cross Country, Netball, Swimming and Athletics. In February 2016 we competed in the Lancashire Finals for Athletics;a superb achievement! Following that we competed at the Lancashire Finals for Gymnastics!
Last year every Y6 pupil represented the school in sport at some point in their school career; 39 pupils out of 39. Amazing!
We used our Sports Premium money to enhance the great PE and sport that already exists. We signed up to the South Ribble Active Coaching Programme which includes dance coaching, gymnastics coaching, hockey coaching, orienteering, tennis, the Bikeability Programme for Y6 and Tots on Tyres training for Reception.
This is the second year we have employed a Sports Apprentice to assist with the delivery of PE and Sport in curriculum time as well as after school and during lunchtimes. This is already having an impact on our pupils being more active at lunchtime!
We have teamed up with our local high school, All Hallows to access even more opportunities for sport. We will of course continue to welcome our termly visits from Freddy Fit.
As well as maintaining and building on our sporting success, we will be making sure that every teacher has access to professional development in PE. High quality teaching of PE is just as important as high quality teaching in maths and literacy.
We have used the school house system to enable more regular intra- house tournaments with football and rugby to coincide with European and World tournaments. We were proud to be awarded the Gold School Games Mark and the Gold Youth Sport Trust Award
The impact on children’s health and well being has been outstanding with 100% participation rates in PE lessons and since September and over 180 children involved in after school sports activities throughout the year. Hockey Club, Netball Club, Football Club, Dance Club etc.
PE and sport is thriving at St Oswald’s and will continue to do so with the help of our Sports Premium money!
